Honda Builds 25 Millionth Car in the USA
Honda today built its 25 millionth automobile in the United States, a 2018 Accord produced at the Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio. Beginning production in 1982, the plant made Honda the first Japanese automaker to produce cars in the U.S. and is one of five Honda auto plants now operating in the United States.
Twelve different Honda and Acura cars and light trucks are now produced at the company's five auto plants in Ohio, Alabama and Indiana, along with the engines and transmissions that power them, which are produced in Ohio, Alabama and Georgia. Honda has invested almost $14 billion in its U.S. facilities that support automotive production including $3.4 billion in new investment during the past four years to advance Honda's U.S. operations. Honda also purchases parts and materials from 624 original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
For over 35 years, Honda associates in America have focused on building high quality automobiles for our customers, a passionate commitment that has enabled us to reach this production milestone, said Tom Shoupe, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Honda of America Mfg., Inc. This achievement truly represents 25 million customers who put their faith in the Honda brand and we will continue to honor this relationship with a focus on achieving the highest levels of quality and innovation in the next 25 million vehicles.
To celebrate the production milestone, Honda has initiated an annual scholarship fund for students pursuing educations in the fields of engineering, supply chain and manufacturing at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The initial donation of $25,000 will be administered through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). In addition to the financial support, scholarship recipients will be invited to interview for internships and co-op positions at Honda operations.
This scholarship highlights Honda's commitment to investing in HBCU students by creating scholarships, internships and opportunities for co-op positions for our scholars, said Dr. Harry L. Williams, TMCF president & CEO. Without corporate partners like Honda, we would not be able to help deserving students interested in engineering, supply chain management and other related fields achieve the American dream.
Honda has a long tradition of supporting higher education, which includes its support for HBCUs. Honda sponsors the annual Honda Battle of the Bands, a musical showcase and scholarship fund for HBCU bands, and the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, an academic competition for the best and brightest students from HBCUs.
Marking the occasion at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant was an all-new 2018 Honda Accord in obsidian blue pearl.
The best-selling car in America since its debut in 1976, the 10th-generation Accord was selected as the 2018 North American Car of the Year, following a new-from-the-ground-up redesign that features dramatic new styling, a new body structure and all-new powertrain strategy – including two new turbo engines and the world's first 10-speed automatic transmission for a front-wheel drive car.

HONDA 30 Years of Jobs and Impact in Ohio
On November 1, 1982, Honda made history as the first assembled-in-America Honda accord drove off the assembly line in Marysville, Ohio. Honda of America Manufacturing is proud to mark its 30th anniversary of this event. Since then, the company has increased manufacturing in Ohio and the U.S. to accommodate sales here and increase exports from the U.S. On November 14, CMC will feature long-time employees and leaders of the Marysville plant who will discuss the impact that Honda has had in their lives and communities.
Honda was the first Japanese-owned car manufacturer to build an assembly plant in the United States and central Ohio has benefitted from the jobs that Honda and its vendors have brought to the area. There was already a track record of manufacturing success in the central Ohio as proven by Honda's motorcycle plant which opened three years prior to the car plant. Today, the plant builds 9 times more cars than when it opened which is important because the Honda accord continues to be a top seller in the U.S. Honda of American Manufacturing employs 13,500 people in Ohio, in 2 communities which comprise about half of all Honda employees in the U.S.
Rick Schostek, senior vice president, Honda of America Mfg., Inc., and scheduled speaker for the CMC forum on the November 14, noted that As we begin to take on a larger role within global Honda to meet the needs of customers around the world, this is the right moment to reflect on the great accomplishment by our team of associates in Ohio in Honda's first 30 years of U.S. auto production. It is noteworthy that the company has invested $12.5 billion in manufacturing in America, with a good portion of that in Ohio.
Where's that historic silver accord made in Marysville in 1982 now? With the Ohio license plate USA 001, it is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich.

Honda of America Achieves Three Gold Level E3 Awards
Ohio EPA Director Craig W. Butler presented Honda’s Marysville, East Liberty and Anna plants with the Agency’s highest award for environmental stewardship — the Encouraging Environmental Excellence (E3) Gold-Level Award.
In 1979, Honda of America opened its first plant in Marysville. Today, Honda is one of Ohio’s largest manufacturers. The company employs approximately 13,000 people at four separate manufacturing locations near Marysville.
In 2011, Honda achieved and has since maintained zero-waste to landfill status and was selected as an Ohio EPA E3 Silver Award-winner in 2013. Since then, Honda has continued its environmental improvement efforts and is now being recognized for:
- Achieving zero waste to landfill status by sending more than 94 percent of manufacturing waste materials to recycling during 2013, 2014 and 2015;
- Substantially reducing electricity and natural gas usage by implementing hydrogen fuel cell technology in industrial vehicles (forklifts, etc.);
- Producing “free” electricity by installing a hydropower system that generates approximately 50,000 kilowatt-hours per year from water flowing from a roof-mounted cooling tower to a floor level sump;
- Converting lighting in many areas to more efficient fluorescent and LED lighting;
- Using next generation e-coat material to, reduce the generation of Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs by approximately 40 percent; and
- Providing strong management support to the implementation of ISO 14001 environmental management systems (EMS) that drive continuous environmental improvements at these facilities.

Honda invests $267 million, adds 300 jobs in Ohio to produce new turbocharged Accord
Honda Motor Co. is investing $267 million and adding 300 jobs at two Ohio factories as it begins mass production of the redesigned Accord flagship sedan for 2018.
The investments include $220 million for hundreds of new welding robots and other upgrades at the company’s Marysville assembly plant, and $47 million for its engine plant in nearby Anna, to start building the company’s first turbocharged engine.
Honda already announced a combined $149 million investment to begin building a new 10-speed automatic transmission for the Accord at factories in Tallapoosa, Georgia, and Russells Point, Ohio.
The investments help take the Accord in a sportier direction, with a lower and wider stance and more interior room. It’s a repeat of the playbook Honda followed with the Civic compact redesign for the 2016 model year, which enabled the carmaker to withstand that segment’s slump better than the likes of the Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra.
“The Civic we introduced in 2015 is head and shoulders above the competition in retail sales,” said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president for Honda’s U.S. sales operations. “We fully expect the 2018 Accord to have the same impact on the mid-sized sedan segment.”
In Marysville’s all-new welding shop, the world’s first high-volume laser brazing system joins the top and side of the car together so precisely that designers could eliminate an 1.5-cm-wide black plastic strip that covered up the gap in prior models, said Steve Rodriguez, the engineering project leader for Accord.
Honda is on track to sell about 330,000 Accords this year, with deliveries down 4.5 percent through August compared with the same period last year.
Honda Acura NSX 2015
The Honda NSX, marketed as Acura NSX in North America, is a mid-engine sports car manufactured by Honda. The first-generation prototype debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show under the developmental code name NS-X, which represented new, sportscar and unknown world. The prototype's name was later adopted as the official name of the production model, with a slight change to NSX. The rear-wheel drive two-seater was the first car from Honda with an all-aluminium body. Powered by an all-aluminium V6 engine, it featured Honda's VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system developed in the 1980s. The NSX was manufactured in Japan from 1990 to 2005 before being discontinued.
In December 2011, Honda officially announced the second-generation NSX concept, which was unveiled the following month at the 2012 North American International Auto Show. The first production version was shown several years later at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The all-wheel drive NSX hybrid features a twin-turbo V6 engine and several different drive mode operations. It will be produced in the United States at the Honda plant in Marysville, Ohio beginning in 2015.
