HOUSTON CHINATOWN
“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”
Chinese Proverb
This is a story of travel, identity and culture. The Chinese contribution to shaping the cultural landscape of the United States was immense. In the early 19th century Chinese immigrants left their homeland following stories of California gold and came looking for work. In the 19th century building of railroads across the United States needed much labor. This paved the way for these newly arrived workers to find jobs. Their wages were meager, living conditions were poor yet for them the land of opportunity was hopeful. As indentured laborers they were treated harshly and ridiculed of their dress, pigtails and conical straw hats. This was their beginning. In 1869 and 1870 nearly 300 Chinese workers were brought from California to Texas to work the Houston and Texas central railroad construction. They were contracted for 5 yeas and at the end of their contract nearly 100 stayed back. In 1874 nearly a 150 Chinese were registered to vote in Robertson County.
Their presence paved the way for many Asian cultural aspects to be assimilated into the already diverse United States. Chinese food became popular and celebrations of Lunar New Year parades were seen on street corners. By 1881 the Texas Pacific railroad was moving west from Texarkana, and Reeves County in west Texas became the first known Chinatown.
After world war two many other Asians entered the country. Northern Chinese who mostly spoke Mandarin who were often professionals entered. Vietnamese, Koreans, Taiwanese followed paving the way for many Asian businesses to spring up.
The Houston Chinatown initially was located between Bellaire Boulevard and Harwin road. Today after 20 years of development it is ten times bigger than its original size. Many Chinese investors from Taiwan and Hong Kong bought land and buildings and started businesses. Diho square was the first Chinese owned and operated shopping center. Today the Hong Kong mall is a bustling center of restaurants, grocery stores and bubble tea houses. Commercial real estate ventures developed the area and Dynasty square and Asia City purchased more property. Metro Bank is a Chinese owned and operated bank and contributed much to the development of the town. Today Bellaire Boulevard is considered as one of the major financial centers in southern Texas.
To a visitor today Chinatown is a bustling place of commerce. From bubble tea houses to shaved ice desserts with red bean paste, jasmine tea to dim sum or to get some good dumplings Chinatown is a much favored place by many Houstonians. To me Chinatown is a place of history telling us stories of a people, culture and industry.

Houston’s Vietnamese Language Radio Binds Community
Houston now has the largest community of Vietnamese in the United States outside the state of California, and the Vietnamese population in other Texas cities is also growing. One key to keeping the people in these communities informed and in touch with the community at large is the radio station called Radio Saigon-Houston. As VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from Houston, the broadcasts provide a link to Vietnam as well.
