History of Nikko
Beginning of Mountain Worship in Nikko
In 766 when the capital of Japan was Nara, a Buddhist priest named Shodo Shonin (Saint Shodo), stepped into the mountains in Nikko and founded the Shihonryuji Temple (the origin of the Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple),: this was the beginning of the history of Nikko. Then, Shodo Shonin tried to climb the 2,486-high Mt. Nantaisan and reached to the top at the third attempt. Having founded okumiya (the rear shrine), and hongu (main shrine), there, he opened the Jinguji Temple (current Chuzenji Temple), by the Chuzenji Lake. From this time, Nikko’s prosperity began, as a sacred place of faith where Shintoism to worship the mountain god coexists with Buddhism to consider the mountains as the pure land of the Goddess of Mercy.
“Portrait of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu” (In Possession of the Homotsu-kan at Nikko Toshogu Shrine),Splendorous and Flamboyant Shrine Constructed by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu
Tokuga Ieyasu is the Shogun who established the Edo bakufu that was to be maintained for more than 250 years. Wishing to watch his country to be in peace, Ieyasu left a will to construct a small shrine in the mountain of Nikko and enshrine his bones. After Ieyasu had died in 1616, the shrine was constructed in Nikko next year to follow his will. Then, the shrine renovated into the current splendorous and flamboyant style of the Nikko Toshogu Shrine by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shogun and Ieyasu’s grandson. Iemitsu wished to serve Ieyasu even after his death and ordered to construct the Taiyuin, the mausoleum of himself, in the mountain of Nikko. After that, Nikko was prospered as a town built around the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and more than 200,000 cedar trees were planted on the approach to the shrine by his subjects.
Secluded Area Where Fleeing Heike Warriors Inhabited Secretly
The battle between the Minamotos and the Tairas started in 1185 and divided Japan into two. It is said that some warriors of the Taira clan who defeated at the battle fled to this place, which was more than 1,000km away from the battle area, and inhabited secretly. They made their own communities by dangerous ravines near Yunishigawa and Kawamata to hide and escape from their enemy, and their ancestors have lived there for several hundred years quietly and secretly. Even now, they have maintained their own unique custom: for example, they do not emit smoke from their houses and do not keep dogs and hens, because of the big noise they make.

【World Heritage】Nikko Toshogu Shrine【Shrines and Temples of Nikko】
Nikko Toshogu is a Shinto shrine established in 1617 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. Ieyasu was born on December 26, 1542 in Okazaki Castle in Mikawa (present day Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture). After a great deal of hardship from an early age he succeeded in pacifying the country after a turbulent period of conflict and established the Tokugawa shogunate system in 1603. His actions brought order and organization to Japanese society while promoting scholarship and industry. Ieyasu laid the foundation for over 260 years of peace and culture during the Edo Period, greatly contributing to the development of modern Japan.
Ieyasu died aged 75 at Sunpu Castle (present day Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture) on April 17, 1616, and his remains were immediately buried at Kunozan. In accordance with his Will, one year later, on April 15, 1617, his remains were entombed at their present location. Ieyasu’s enshrinement ceremony was solemnly conducted at the then Tosho Shrine, as it was originally called and the fore-runner of the present Toshogu Shrine, on April 17 in the presence of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second shogun, and other members of the shogunate and imperial court. The shrine was subsequently given the designation Toshogu in 1645.
The main buildings that you see today were rebuilt in 1636 by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.

Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the Kumano region's three important shrines.
Kumano Hongū Taisha (熊野本宮大社) is a Shinto shrine located in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, deep in the mountains. As well as enshrining its own deity, Hongu Taisha also enshrines the deities of the other two Kumano shrines, Nachi Taisha and Hayatama Taisha, and the sun goddess Amaterasu. It serves as the head shrine of more than 3000 Kumano shrines across Japan.
Over 900 years ago a pilgrim wrote of a massive shrine grounds including five main pavilions enshrining 12 deities. Numerous other small temples and shrines could be found surrounding the main buildings. Hongu Taisha is located at the center of the Kumano Kodo network of pilgrimage routes.
There are three hot springsnear Hongu: Yunomine, Kawayu and Wataze. The first two are small onsen towns while Wataze Onsen is composed of a single hotel complex, Watarase Onsen, which is known for having the largest outdoor bath in western Japan. The bath is also open to non staying guests.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha - Shizuoka - 富士山本宮浅間大社 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in the southwestern foothills of Mount Fuji in the city Fujinomiya, Fujisan Sengen Shrine a regionally important shrine and head shrine of over 1300 Sengen and Asama shrines across Japan. Originally built over a millennium ago for the protection against a volcanic eruption, the Fujisan Sengen Shrine is also one of the traditional starting points to climb Mt. Fuji. While being one of Japan's oldest shrines, the Fujisan Sengen Shrine has suffered from many natural disasters and all that remains intact today is its unique two-story inner shrine construction as well as its outer shrine buildings and tower gate.
Alongside its heavy cultural and spiritual heritage the Fujisan Sengen Shrine also offers a beautiful sakura festival thanks to its 500 cherry trees usually blooming around late March to early April.

Mt. Kuno Toshogu Shrine (Kuno-zan Toshogu), Temples of Japan, Shizuoka Prefecture
Mt. Kuno Toshogu Shrine or Kuno-zan Toshogu Shrine is located on Mt. Kuno in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Kuno-zan Toshogu is dedicated to the deified spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the greatest shogun in Japanese history. It was built in 1617 by the second shogun, Hidetada, the third son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, here on Mt. Kuno.
There are thirteen structures within the sacred grounds. All of them are the original structures, and have been designated as important cultural properties by the Japanese Government.
There are two ways to get to the temple, one by walk, climbing about 1159 stone steps or by taking the ropeway from Nihondaira Bus Stop across from the shrine.
It is said that as you climb up the 1159 steps leading to the sacred grounds, you are purified by the magical power. In the sacred grounds, as many people have discovered, you can meet the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
The shrine was originally built in the mixed style of Shintoism and Buddhism. But after the shogunate government came to its end, the new government led by the emperor, ordered the separation of the two religions, and some Buddhist style structures were removed or remodeled. The remnants of the Buddhist style can still be seen in various locations.
The same fundamental architectural style was copied by the Nikko Toshogu shrine which was built by the third shogun in 1636. Tens of other Toshogu shrines using the same architectural style were built by the local feudal lords all over Japan.
Hope you get a chance to visit this shrine and enjoy it.
Kumano kodo and Japanese Traditional Wedding Ceremony with Kimono at Kumano Hongu Taisha
Kumano kodo and Japanese Traditional Wedding Ceremony with Kimono at Kumano Hongu Taisha
