May 4, 2012 China_Drought leaves 680,000 thirsty in southwest China
A sustained drought has caused water shortages for more than 680,000 people living in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and neighboring Guizhou Province, said local authorities Friday.
The water shortages have so far affected at least 200,000 people, more than 70,000 heads of livestock and damaged 31,000 hectares of crops in six counties around the city of Baise of northwest Guangxi, the regional civil affairs bureau said in a statement.
The regional weather bureau said western and southern parts of Guangxi have suffered sustained heat and drought. The average temperature has been 2-3 degrees Celsius higher than normal, while the region has seen 30-50 percent less precipitation than usual.
In Guizhou, a similar drought has affected 482,000 people, 187,00 heads of livestock and 55,000 hectares of crops in the province's southwest region as of Thursday, according to a statement released by the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters Friday.
Monitoring results showed that 25 counties in the province are suffering from moderate or severe drought.
The local government has mobilized 107,000 people and more than 500 vehicles to provide drinking water to the thirsty population.
No effective precipitation is expected for the coming week, according to Weather authorities in Guangxi and Guizhou.

Torrential Rain Hits Multiple Regions in China
Torrential rain hit many areas in China on Thursday, including east China's Jiangsu Province, southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, and north China's Shanxi Province.
Heavy rainfall started in the evening and caused many floods to occur, which affected city streets and trapped many vehicles and pedestrians. In Dazhou City of southwest China, the precipitation level reached 155.9 millimeter. The flood caused severe damage to many properties. Several stores in Dazu district of Chongqing were flooded with water. Meanwhile, firefighters tried to pull a girl out of a drain in Banan district of Chongqing Municipality. In the reservoir area of Chongqing, a 13-year-old girl was washed away by the flood. The girl is still missing and rescue work continues.
The local government in most cities took immediate steps in order to prevent further flooding. In Huai An City of Jiangsu Province, the floodgates at the Hongze Lake were opened to help remove the excess water.

Severe droughts parching farmland in central China's Hubei Province and east China's Anhui Province have left thousands of people suffering economic losses, local authorities said Tuesday.
As of Sunday, 31 cities and counties in Hubei have been affected by the drought, leaving 306,000 hectares of crops withering in the dry land, accumulating an economic losses of 350 million yuan.
The northern part of Anhui province has received the lowest amount of rainfall, 26 millimeters, on record since May 1, according to the latest data from the provincial hydrological bureau.
A total of 930,000 hectares of crops in Anhui have been affected and more than 1,000 ships have been stranded along a three-kilometer section of the lower reaches of the Wohe River, leaving more than 2,000 crew members aboard with little drinking water.
The drought is expected to wane as the province will see rainstorms in the following few days, the Anhui Provincial Meteorological Observatory said Tuesday.
The drought in the southern part of Hubei has waned thanks to recent heavy rain in the region. From Tuesday to Thursday, the region saw a new round of rainstorms, according to the provincial meteorological observatory.
None of the plots has been irrigated so far. I have invested 400 yuan on each mu (0.0667 hectare) of land but will get nothing in return. I will lose 20,000 yuan in total this year, said Wu Zhengzhong, a local villager.
The declining water level of Hongze Lake in east China's Jiangsu Province has left some 1,800 vessels stranded on Monday, which lined up for about six kilometers for ten days.
The water level fell to 11.3 meters on Monday, 1.2 meters lower than the navigatable mark.
Since May, northern Jiangsu has seen less rainfall than an average year. The low water level and insufficient volume of upstream river water, the Huaihe River, are the major causes of the stranding, according to the navigation management.
At present, only vessels loaded with energy-related goods such as coal are allowed to pass the ship lock so as to ensure power supply. The empty vessels were required to suspend their navigation temporarily.
I bought this boat with (a loan of) 1.5 million yuan, and now I am losing 750 yuan everyday, which is growing, said Wu Tingchang, a boatman from Anhui Province.

Severe droughts have plagued Shandong and Henan provinces as well as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in eastern, central and northwestern parts of China, causing water shortages for thousands of people and farmlands.
Continuous heat wave and lack of rainfall have aggravated the drought in central China's Henan Province, leaving over 13,000 hectares of rice fields running dry in the major rice-planting city, Xinyang.
Li Mingxing, a villager in Landian County has sown rice seeds in the field at the end of March, however, due to the lack of water the seedlings have to remain nesting in its seedling fields.
We can not grow rice now as rice shoots are on the verge of death due to water shortages, said Li Mingxing, a villager.
With no effective rainfall since last year, five small and medium-sized reservoirs in Landian County have dried up. The local villagers can only pin their hope on the weather conditions as the lack of groundwater and granite structure make it almost impossible to dig wells.
According to the latest statistics, the province's autumn crops affected by drought have reached over two million hectares, and 20,000 livestock are facing lack of drinking water.
Lingering drought has also caused farmlands in east China's Linyi City to dry up.
The lack of precipitation for more than 60 days coupled with fast evaporation rate in the summer heat, the city's reservoir has decreased to 500,000 cubic meters from 1.5 million cubic meters, affecting 20,000 local residents.
Elsewhere, parts of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have also been affected by the rising temperature and reduced rainfall in June, over 450,000 hectares of farmlands and grasslands have started to dry up.
