Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a memorial park in the center of Hiroshima, Japan. It is dedicated to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city in the world to suffer a nuclear attack, and to the memories of the bomb's direct and indirect victims. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was planned and designed by the Japanese Architect Kenzō Tange at Tange Lab.
The location of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was once the city’s busiest downtown commercial and residential district. The park was built on an open field that was created by the explosion. Today there are a number of memorials and monuments, museums, and lecture halls, which draw over a million visitors annually. The annual 6 August Peace Memorial Ceremony, which is sponsored by the city of Hiroshima, is also held in the park. The purpose of the Peace Memorial Park is to not only memorialize the victims, but also to establish the memory of nuclear horrors and advocate world peace.

Follow our heroes Andrew and David as they explore the Dobashi area with Local TV talent Yuki Omote.
Also, we have come to the Honkawa Elementary School that was severely affected by the atomic bomb that was dropped on August 8th, 1945. This museum they have there is severely overlooked and we hope to spread the message of peace the school shares.
Lastly, our group has come to Hachidori-sha Social Book Cafe, the one and only of its kind.

Crane Folding at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony - August 6, 2010
Jessa visited Hiroshima, Japan in summer 2010 with the Shizumi Kodomo Dance Troupe ( In addition to dancing at the opening of the art exhibition Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard, they danced at several elementary schools and a Hiroshima Carp-Tokyo Giants baseball game. Here Jessa's friend Reina is helping her fold an origami crane at the Peace Memorial Ceremony. The golden paper was given out for that purpose and Jessa really wanted to make one.
2000 Paper Cranes - A Memorial to Sadako Sasaki
UPDATE (Dec 2016): The art piece has been moved and found a permanent home in the Hiroshima mayor's office.
---
UPDATE (Jan 2015): It's been almost 7 years since I started, but my Sadako art piece has finally found a home in Hiroshima, Japan! It is on display in the Honkawa Kindergarten in Hiroshima. It is the closest kindergarten to the Peace Memorial Park. I'm so excited to know that my art may inspire a new generation.
---
This is an art project I've created to memorialize Sadako Sasaki.
Contained within the fragile wings of these 2000 paper cranes is the portrait of Sadako Sasaki. A child victim of leukemia from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, Sadako folded paper cranes as a means to become well again. She eventually lost her battle from a disease caused by a war that was no fault of her own. Drawing from her dedication to overcome adversity and born from the hope to memorialize and inspire, each grayscale crane serves to allow Sadako's story of perseverance and optimism to live on. A single origami crane stands true as a universal symbol of peace, but when folded and grouped into larger quantities, their overwhelming inspiration seems to flourish.
Although hatred and greed abundantly affect much of our world, it seems that compassion and empathy are spread thin. These emotions, be it love or hate, are universal, and not exclusive to any one creed; their potential lives inside everyone. This message is echoed in the fact that a folded origami crane can blossom from any hand. It is hoped that the solemn stare of the girl that materializes from within the careful arrangement of folded paper helps the viewer to reflect on the potential that lives inside themselves.

Pictures From a Hiroshima Schoolyard trailer 2015 HD
Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard presents the aftermath of the first atomic bomb through the remarkable drawings and untold stories of surviving Japanese school children who were part of an extraordinary exchange with their American counterparts.
In 1995, a parishioner of the All Souls Church in Washington, D.C., discovered a long-forgotten box containing dozens of colorful drawings made by Japanese children from the Honkawa Elementary School in Hiroshima just two years after their city was destroyed. The surprisingly hopeful drawings were created and sent to the church nearly 50 years earlier in appreciation for much-needed school supplies received as part of the church’s post-war humanitarian efforts.
The Honkawa school was just 1100 feet from ground zero on August 6, 1945. Nearly 400 children died in the schoolyard that fateful morning. Surviving students and teachers describe the horror of that day and reflect on their difficult lives amidst the rubble of their decimated city, as well as the hope they shared through their art.
Classes resumed soonafter in the window-less concrete shell of the remaining Honkawa school building to provide some sense of normalcy. The film features recently found archival footage that shows what life was like in the weeks and months after the bomb fell and how Hiroshima gradually recovered.
The rediscovered drawings were restored by members of the All Souls Church, who several years later embarked on an emotional journey to Japan to exhibit the artwork at the Honkawa school and reunite the surviving artists for the first time with the drawings they created as children.
The artists and church members reflect on the lessons that resulted from a compassionate exchange nearly 70 years ago between American and Japanese children following a bitter and devastating World War.
