1945 WWII USS BLACKFORD (APB-45) HOME MOVIES HONOLULU, HAWAII 51784
Dating to 1945, this home movie shows life aboard the USS Blackford (APB-45), a Benewah-class self-propelled barracks ship that was in service with the United States Navy during the waning days of World War II. It was apparently shot by photographer's mate R.E. Markell between August of 1945 and April of 1946. The film begins somewhere off the Sea of Japan with shots of sailors scrubbing the ships' deck (:41), eating sandwiches (:55) and sunbathing. At 1:00 two Japanese floating mines are spotted off the coast of Japan and destroyed by gunfire while the crew observes. At 2:25 sailors play catch on the deck of the ship. At 3:52 haircuts are given on deck. At 4:44 an observant crew member points out an island, possibly Eniwetok, where the ship was stationed for a few months as a floating barracks. Crew members relax and swim, diving off the ship. At 10:25 more swabbing of the deck. At 12:21 crew sleep on deck and are woken up by a crewmate to do more swabbing.
At 14:00 the ship arrives in Hawaii Pearl Harbor and the crew departs for shore in landing ships. At 15:41 are views of Honolulu in the immediate post-WWII period. At 15:57 the Hawaii theater marquee is seen with the continuous show displayed on the marquee. At 16:13 the movie Tokyo Rose is advertised. It was released in February of 1946 so gives a rough idea of timeframe. At 16:18 a soldier tries to get lucky with a beautiful looking Hawaiian woman, but it looks like it goes nowhere. At 16:34 the Lai Fong A fancy dry goods store is shown in Japantown. A tattoo shop is also seen. The Hawaii & South Seas Curio Co. is visible at 18:00 and at 18:04 a sign advertises the Waikiki Baths and surfboard rentals. At 18:17 the beach at Waikiki is shown with Diamond Head in the background. At 22:30 the hula girls do their thing. The film ends with crew of the ship returning to the Blackford in a playful mood. The war is over and their next stop will be the mainland and freedom.
Authorized as LST-1111, she was redesignated as General Issue Stores Ship Blackford AKS-16 on 8 December 1944. On 2 January 1945, her keel was laid down at Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., and on 6 March 1945 she was once more redesignated, this time as Self-Propelled Barracks Ship Blackford APB-45. She launched on 9 April 1945 and was commissioned 9 July 1945 at Navy Supply Depot, New Orleans with Lieutenant A. E. Lorance, Jr., USNR, in command.
During the war, Blackford served the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations.Arriving at Pearl Harbor on 19 August 1945, she joined the 3rd Amphibious Force. On 5 October 1945, she was assigned with Occupation Duty for 25 days up to 30 October 1945. During the next eight months she served at Eniwetok, Ulithi, Leyte, and Tokyo Bay as a floating barracks. She departed Yokosuka, Japan, 7 April and arrived at New Orleans 14 May 1946. Moving to Orange, Texas, 10 June, she went out of commission in reserve there 26 April 1947.
After 13 years of being laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, she was struck from the Naval Register on 1 April 1960. 3 years later, in 1963, she was purchased by Collins Submarine Pipeline. She would serve this merchant role until 1968-1970, when she was sunk as a target by the South African military.

1930s HONOLULU HAWAII TRAVELOGUE U.S. NAVY 27484
Made in the era just before WWII, CROSSROADS OF THE PACIFIC shows views of Honolulu and Hawaii as it appeared before the airplane made it a tourist mecca. The film emphasizes the islands' strategic significance and uses the ships of the U.S. Navy, and sailors men on a Hawaiian cruise to show off the tropical paradise. A naval gunnery and torpedo firing exercise is seen at the 2 minute mark, followed by a visit to the islands by men and ships. A traditional welcome with leis is seen at the 4 minute mark, although the dames involved do not appear to be natives. A waikiki trolley car is seen at the 4:00 mark, with sailors rushing to the beach and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Surfing and boating is also seen at Diamond Head, with the fleet seen at anchor off the beach.

The Biggest Tree in the United States of America is in Hawaii? | Something I Found Interesting
It's time to debut a new series called Something I Found Interesting, where I talk about...well...things I found that were interesting. We're starting with an easy pick: the largest tree in the United States of America. It's located in a place many might not expect: Hawaii. Shocked? Well, that probably means your opinions about tree accomplishments are too strong, but nevertheless you should watch the video anyway.

Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, that was the scene of a devastating surprise attack by Japanese forces on the morning of December 7, 1941.
The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.
Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes.
More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded.

The American Military Invasion of Hawaii in 1893
The US military wanted large bases in Hawaii to support dreams of an American Empire in Asia. As a result, the US Navy quietly organized a coup with the help of wealthy white land owners in Hawaii to oust its Queen and make Hawaii a US territory.

Winter Storm Maya Grinds Seattle's Afternoon Commute to a Halt; Emergency Declared in Washington
Winter Storm Maya arrived in the Northwest Friday, and Seattle residents scrambled to get home.
About 300 flights in and out of Sea-Tac have been canceled for Friday and Saturday.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency as the storm arrived.
Seattle and other parts of Washington and the Pacific Northwest felt the full wrath of Winter Storm Maya as heavy snow fell Friday. In Washington, Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency as conditions worsened Friday afternoon.
Weather forecasters predict this may be a storm unlike one we've seen in many years, the governor said in the release.
Snow had started to fall on Washington's Olympic Peninsula and in the higher terrain elsewhere. Along the Olympic Peninsula, towns that hardly see a few inches of accumulating snow per season picked up a foot or more in one day.

Flakes begin to fall in the Seattle metro area about 1:30 p.m. local time. As the snow increased in intensity, traffic slowed to a crawl.
Many businesses and schools, including the Seattle, Tacoma and Edmonds school districts, decided to close early Friday in advance of the snow, the Seattle Times reported.
East of Tacoma, a woman fell through the ice on a pond while walking her dog in the city of Edgewood Friday afternoon, according to KOMO News. Emergency crews responded to the scene and pulled her to safety, the report added.
Emergency shelters for the homeless were prepared in Seattle and surrounding King County on Friday, the Seattle Times said in a separate report.
“This is an extreme weather event, and offering shelter is the most important thing we can do right now,” said Will Lemke, spokesman for the Seattle Human Services Department. “Public health and safety concerns remain, but life safety is our primary concern as temperatures plunge and snow falls.”
The storm also had already made an impact on air travel. More than 200 flights into and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
To the south, residents in Portland packed supermarkets to grab supplies before the snowstorm arrived, and schools canceled weekend activities, according to the Associated Press. Oregonian.
Unusually Strong Hawaii Storm This Weekend May Bring Damaging Winds, Unprecedented Coastal Flooding, NWS Says
An unusually intense storm will hammer Hawaii this weekend with widespread high winds, potentially damaging coastal flooding in unusual locations of the island chain
Hawaii's typically tranquil weather is usually dominated by subtropical high pressure and northeast trade winds, providing plenty of sunshine downwind of the islands
These storms approach the islands from the northwest or west, with moisture-laden south to southwest winds, the opposite of the typical trade winds. Kona storms typically soak most of the islands, including those areas to the west and southwest of the volcanic peaks
This weekend's storm is a strange one. Not quite a classic kona storm
Instead of approaching from the west or northwest, this storm will plunge from south of the Aleutian Islands Friday to near the Hawaiian Island chain
Resembling a cresting wave, strong high pressure building north of the storm will force it to track due south, setting up a blocking pattern known as a Rex block.
The surface low will quickly intensify into the 980s millibars, a central pressure with some typical intense Northeast U.S. coastal storms known as nor'easters.
The upper-level core of this storm may be among the coldest for this part of the central Pacific in the last 40
Given the intensity of this storm, high winds won't simply be pinned to the highest elevations.
strong, possibly damaging north to northwest winds are expected this weekend not simply over the higher volcanic peaks, but also downwind of the mountains, potentially including parts of the Honolulu metro area, and any areas particularly exposed to north to northwest winds. One rough analog to this is the downslope windstorms that occur along the Front Range of the Rockies from Montana to Wyoming and Colorado.
