Hood River Park
we travel to Hood River on the Columbia River Gorge to see the newest garden in the city. This one was built by a large group of local citizens and even features plantings of native plants.

Historic Columbia River Highway and Waterfalls
The Historic Columbia River Highway was the first modern highway constructed in the Pacific Northwest and the first scenic highway in the United States.
The section we will travel still remains pretty much true to Engineer Samuel Lancaster and and Sam Hill's vision.. The highway opened in 1916 and eventually wound its' way from Portland to the Dalles, almost 90 miles east of Portland.
Interstate 84 out of Portland parallels the original highway. We go past the Multnomah Falls viewing area and get off of Interstate 84 at exit 35 and head back west towards Portland for about a 17 mile drive on the Historic Columbia River Highway.
Since its opening the Historic Columbia River Highway has been a favored destination for travelers earning it the coveted title by many as the King of Highways.
With its gorgeous scenery including cascading waterfalls and deep gorges, this historic highway offers up what the original designers called beauty spots.
Horsetail Falls is our first. Now for the grand daddy of the falls along the Historic Highway, Multnomah Falls. Millions of visitors each year are inspired by these falls. This water fall is the second-tallest year-round waterfall in the nation. The water drops 620 feet.
The winding road of the scenic highway will deliver us next to Wahkeena Falls. Like most of the falls along the Historic Columbia River Highway, trails take you through some gorgeous and majestic scenery. The Vista House was built in 1916 at the same time as Highway 30. The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of the Columbia Gorge.
The octagonal building with its copper dome houses a museum, gift shop and interpretive display of historic and geologic points of interest in the Gorge and a awe inspiring view of the Columbia River 733 feet below.
.At one time the highway was home to many roadhouses where travelers could get a good meal and rest. A mile past vista House, At the Portland Women's Forum State Park at
Chanticleer Point this is the former site of the Chanticleer Inn, where the highway's masterminds met in 1913 to plan construction. Scott Walter gets his camera out and visits the Historic Columbia Highway and its' waterfalls.
Grant's Getaways: Towns to Trails in the Gorge
As spring reaches full bloom, Oregonians are eager to hit a hiking trail. Fortunately in the Columbia River Gorge there's a new way to discover the nooks and crannies of the region, one that encourages visitors to try local flavors too. The Mosier Plateau Trail is the first completed trail segment of Towns to Trails, an ambitious project by the Friends of the Columbia Gorge – and supported by the Travel Oregon Forever Fund – that aims to connect the region's towns, businesses and wild areas through a 200-mile trail system.

Grant's Getaways: Trappist Abbey in Oregon Wine Country
Oregon is famous for its delicious wines and scenic vineyards that can provide wonderful escapes from the city. Finding peace – even serenity – in Oregon’s wine country and building a business has proven a winning combination for many of Oregon’s 450-plus wineries.
In Yamhill County, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Trappist Abbey, it is more! The Abbey’s connection to Oregon’s wine story is unique. Father Richard Layton explained that they do not grow grapes or make wine at the Abbey, but they store the bottled wine, thousands and thousands of cases of wine – on pallets that soar to the ceiling.
Rio Vista Winery
John Little owns Rio Vista, a vineyard and winery along the Columbia River near Chelan, Wash. It is quite possibly the only winery in the Pacific Northwest (the United States?) with river access for boaters, including a tasting room on the beach.

Grant's Getaways: Salmon Saviors
It’s been called the “Year of the Salmon” by fishermen and fishery managers alike as Oregon’s estuaries and rivers fill with a stampede of coho and chinook salmon. At Trask Hatchery, the salmon return is off the charts and the largest in memory, according to ODFW Hatchery Manager Jim Skaar. “We are close to 3,000 more coho than we usually get back at this time of year and it seems like it’s a run that never ends. Each time we come down to work the trap there’s more fish.”

Grant's Getaways: Luckiamute River
The Little Luckiamute River cuts a bee-line through eastern flanks of the Oregon Coast Range before it falls in an ear-shattering moment at Falls City, while less than three miles away another sort of fall happens when mountain bikers gather and catch big air across a little piece of heaven called Black Rock Mountain.
It's called Free Riding and it's on a little piece of cycling heaven where the riders catch big air across 500 acres of Oregon State Forest at Black Rock Mountain in Polk County.
Nearby are to more hidden gems: Oregon's very first state park (Sarah Helmick) and the Luckiamute Landing State Natural Area.
Overland on the Back Roads of Mount Hood's Clackamas River
On this overland adventure we're exploring the Oregon back roads of Mount Hood and the Clackamas River. As I drove the forest roads I couldn't help but enjoy taking in the creeks, rivers and ponds I came across. The Story behind the video:
It was cold outside but I stayed warm inside our FJ Cruiser as I explored the Ripplebrook Ranger Station area. No hard core off road adventure more of an enjoyable overland experience and I found some amazingly quiet places where I could get my zen on.
