=======
Dartmouth College ( DART-məth) is a private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. Established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, it is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Although founded as a school to educate Native Americans in Christian theology and the English way of life, Dartmouth primarily trained Congregationalist ministers throughout its early history. The university gradually secularized, and by the turn of the 20th century it had risen from relative obscurity into national prominence as one of the top centers of higher education.Following a liberal arts curriculum, the university provides undergraduate instruction in 40 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs including 57 majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering, and enables students to design specialized concentrations or engage in dual degree programs. Dartmouth comprises five constituent schools: the original undergraduate college, the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. The university also has affiliations with the Dartmouth–Hitchcock Medical Center, the Rockefeller Institute for Public Policy, and the Hopkins Center for the Arts. With a student enrollment of about 6,400, Dartmouth is the smallest university in the Ivy League. Undergraduate admissions are highly competitive, with an acceptance rate of 7.9% for the Class of 2023.Situated on a terrace above the Connecticut River, Dartmouth's 269-acre main campus is in the rural Upper Valley region of New England. The university functions on a quarter system, operating year-round on four ten-week academic terms. Dartmouth is known for its undergraduate focus, strong Greek culture, and wide array of enduring campus traditions. It was exciting to enter another new state, New Hampshire! It was a beautiful fall, New England day, and we were looking forward to the spoils of town. *Click 'SHOW MORE' below for more notes about this video...
Hanover is compact, but efficient, with no vacant buildings. It was easy to learn my way around.
(0:10) Richard Black Senior Center offers a hot shower, and laundry, for only $5! The hiker box was well stocked and had fun reading thank you notes left by other hikers.
One said: I have not been this clean in a long time. Thanks! Signed, A formally stinky hiker from Holland, Jiffy Pop.
(0:30) Dartmouth College is an Ivy League university. It was established by a charter issued, 1769, in the name of King George III: For the education and instruction of Youth of the Indian Tribes in this Land in reading, writing & all parts of Learning.
The beautiful, 269-acre campus, now has schools for Liberal arts, Medicine, Engineering, and Business. Included are nine libraries and the Hood Museum of Art, one of the oldest in North America. There are also many Athletic collectives, with large stadiums.
Besides the campus, Dartmouth owns 4,500 acres around Mount Moosilauke, and an additional 27,000-acres of land.
Some famous Alumni: Theodor Geisel, aka, Dr. Seuss, class of 1925, Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, studied here 1946–48, and Mindy Kaling from The Office and The Mindy Project.
Fun Fact: The cult classic movie, National Lampoon's Animal House was based on fraternity days at Dartmouth.
(1:39) A small cairn marks Robinson Hall, home of the ski team, rowing teams, etc. Hikers are welcome to use the internet and leave our packs in the basement, while we explore town. There is another hiker box, and oddly, free Out of date meds.
A south bounder here said I was too clean to be a thru hiker! (I took that as a compliment.) There is a weird animosity between NoBo's and SoBo's. You would think we are all one big happy family? But there is tension, and light hazing, that goes both ways. That's not to say we would not help each other if needed.
SoBo's feel superior for doing the hardest part first, starting at Katahdin, and we joke that they are doing the whole trail going downhill.
Also, every single SoBo I crossed paths with, tried to intimidate me by saying, The Whites are coming! or The Whites are going to kick your ass. I would sometimes try to put a positive spin on it, and ask if it was beautiful or something. But if they were overly arrogant, I might sarcastically snap back, Dude, I've already hiked 1800 miles, think I'll somehow survive.
(2:02) The library has a whole bank of computers set aside, just for hikers! There was a map of the AT, and summit pics of past thru hikers on the wall, and free books! Very nice! I hung out with 'Weezy'.
(2:14) Finally, thanks to the postmaster in Norwich, I received a couple drop boxes from home. It was nice to get Birthday cards, letters, and drawings from Mom, my sister Beth, and nieces, Kendall, and Devon, even if they were over a month late because of closed post offices.
(2:19) Tons of stores had FREE, excuse me, complimentary, treats for hikers! There is a list of locations in the guidebook. This pizza was delicious!
The outfitter offered a free Snickers, the bakery had a free donut, the bagel shop gives a free bagel, etc. You get the idea. The first hit is free, but the second will cost ya!
I had fun 'free shopping' with 'Daffy'. He had already hit all the shops the day before too! He was a cool kid, but sure liked to use the F-word a lot.
(2:26) Another painted piano, part of the same art project as the one I mislead audiences with in the preceding video.
(2:44) Again, the AT, snakes right down the sidewalks of main street.
(2:47) Hotel rooms here cost about $200 a night! But hikers are welcome to set up camp on the far side of town, behind the athletic fields.
I was walking around fields the next morning, and found a hiker sleeping near a parking lot in his sleeping bag, with his walking stick and other items strewn about, just like last time. It turned out to be '30 Pack' from Virginia. He had the bright idea to cowboy camp in the middle of a soccer field. Sounds like fun, until the automatic water sprinklers started going off!
(3:06) I picked up an elcheapo MP3 player and loaded it with my favorite music from a USB my Mom sent. Yes it's attached to my wrist with rubber bands.
(3:20) Backtracking, looking for the blue bowl I wear on top of my backpack. It had fallen off but I had no idea how far back. After dark, I made camp and was again visited by a creature of the woods. I heard it trotting up the trail, stopped near my hammock, and let out a series of squeaky barks.
Jeanine left this comment: I don't like cliffhangers! Will our intrepid hiker find his bowl?! And what was the scary noise?! Find out on the next episode!!! Grrrr.

Dartmouth's Orozco Mural, The Epic of American Civilization
The Orozco Mural Quetzalcoatl
The Dartmouth College Library was awarded a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) to preserve and make accessible The Orozco Mural Quetzalcoatl, a 23-minute, color film written, produced, and directed in 1961 by Robert Canton '58. The film's purpose is to tell the myth of Quetzalcoatl as depicted in The Epic of American Civilization frescos painted by José Clemente Orozco in Baker Library. Using camera techniques such as pans, close-ups and long shots, and aided by Theodore Newman's dramatic score and a minimal narration, Canton makes the murals come alive.
At its release in 1962 the film received three citations for Specific Excellence from the Second Annual Boston International Film Festival. These citations were: outstanding use of the film medium for educational purposes; realization of inherent potential; and original musical score. The Theodore Newman score was conducted by former Tonight Show conductor Skitch Henderson.
The NFPF grant supported the creation of a new preservation master copy and DVD. The film will be premiered in the Spring 2012 in conjunction with the Hood Museum of Art's special exhibit Men of Fire: José Clemente Orozco and Jackson Pollock.
Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, and the Dartmouth Painting
Bart Thurber, curator of European Art at the Hood Museum of Art and Barbara Will, Professor of English discusses the close relationship between Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso. Dartmouth's own magnificent Picasso painting, Guitar on a Table (1912), journeyed from Stein's collection in Paris to Hanover, New Hampshire.
