Mission
The Hoogland Center for the Arts is located at 420 South Sixth Street, in downtown Springfield and was created to provide a creative and cultural hub for Springfield and the surrounding areas. The Hoogland provides art-related organizations housing and resources in which they can thrive culturally, creatively and collectively. Their mission is to encourage creativity with an emphasis on cultural-arts and expanding the community’s cultural growth through community involvement, education and organizing local and outlying talents.
The Hoogland Center for the Arts meets the physical needs of art-minded organizations while simultaneously encouraging individuals to participate in the arts. Several organizations such as dance performance groups, authors, musical and theatrical collections, art studios and photographers are housed at the Hoogland.
History
The Executive Director of the Springfield Area Arts Council in the early 1980s imagined an artistic cultural center in downtown Springfield at the Springfield Masonic Temple. The Springfield Masonic Temple was a multi-story brick building at 420 South Sixth Street with assorted room sizes and various stages, which is perfect venue for different types of cultural performances.
The cost of obtaining this building to house artistic events was unattainable until 2001. The Springfield Masonic Temple was purchased through a generous offering made by Stephen Bartholf and Carolyn Oxtoby. The Springfield Arts Center, Inc., a not-for-profit organization, began to transform the building into the Center for the Arts. The Illinois Arts Council provided supplementary funding used for architectural expenses. In 2002, a State of Illinois grant for $5.5 million dollars was awarded to transform the former Masonic Temple into a center for the arts in Springfield. Renovation began in 2003, and December 31, 2003, the first official event, 2004 First Night Celebration, was held at the newly renovated Center for the Arts.
In 2004, Charles and Kay Hoogland made a large contribution towards the Center for the Arts and due to their generous contribution, the building is now known as The Hoogland Center for the Arts.
