???? Was ist Craft Beer?

Hops & Barley normally is packed. The reason is as simple as convincing: their own brewed beer. Very international crowd in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. If you´re not into the Hofbräuhaus experience, but more into a pub evening out, Hops & Barley is definetely a good choice.

The First American Craft Brewery in Berlin, Germany
Founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, Stone Brewing has come a long way since opening up in San Diego, California, in 1996. As the eighth-largest craft brewer in the U.S, they set their sights on Europe, and after looking at more than 130 sites in nine different countries, they found the perfect site in Berlin, Germany . Built in 1901, this former gasworks facility resides on an amazing property with industrial and historic elements.
Stone brewing is known for bold, flavourful and largely hop-centric beers, which has earned a reputation for brewing outstanding, unique beers while maintaining an unwavering commitment to sustainability, business ethics, philanthropy and the art of brewing.
Lastly, my first ever craft beer was the Stone IPA. First brewed in 1997, Stone IPA is the iconic West Coast style IPA that essentially launched generations of hop fanatics in the U.S. Stone will always carry a special place in my heart because of this. Cheers -Jeff

The Craft Beer Revolution in Munich, Germany
The German Beer Purity Law—known to Bavarians as the Reinheitsgebot has been around for over 500 years. In it, the region of Southern Germany codified just three permissible ingredients for use in beer production: water, barley, and hops. In the mid 1800's they found out that yeast would make up the fourth ingredient based of Louis Pasteur's research.
At a time when craft beer is incorporating increasingly brave, unexpected flavors into the bottle, German drinkers, as a matter of pride, have largely held true to their rudimentary lagers, brewed according to centuries-old tradition.
From my perspective, the American craft beer scene has a huge impact on our local beer scene, concedes Marc Gallo, of Hopfmeister. The he graphic designer-turned-brewer boldly opened an anti-establishment brewery in Munich in 2015, ground zero for grog traditionalism. Gallo was emboldened by a younger generation of German drinkers in their mid-20s to mid-30s, turning to flavor-forward expressions from across the pond; hop-heavy IPAs of San Diego, barrel-aged stouts of the midwest. The cultural shift, as is so often the case, was borne of the city. I guess craft beer is an urban phenomenon, he reasons, noting that his typical clientele are creative types, cooking, home-brewing, creating their own goods, keen to explore different beer styles and flavors.
So how far is the craft beer scene going to go in Bavaria is anyone’s guess, but when it comes to geography, at least, the craft beer revolution knows no boundaries.

There are a number of choices for fine dining.
Fischers Fritz is known for serving the best seafood in the city.
Restaurant Reinstoff offers haute cuisine based on traditional German dishes.
Weinbar Rutz is known for creating innovative, delicious dishes and offers a selection of over a thousand vintage wines.

Check out the Cafe Einstein Stammhaus for some of the best coffee in the city, in a beautiful historic villa. You can also get classic Austrian food like schnitzel there.

Germans celebrate 500 year old beer law with beer
(22 Apr 2016) LEAD IN:
A law stipulating what a German beer can contain turns 500 years old on Saturday April 22.
The beer purity law - that says beer can only contain water, barley and hops - is celebrated with a festival in its birthplace Ingolstadt.
STORY-LINE:
Food and drink regulations are very rarely celebrated with festivals.
But when the law concerns beer, and the country is Germany - then it makes more sense.
Here at the Pure Beer Festival in Ingolstadt, revellers are celebrating one of the country's most famous regulations, well known to beer lovers around the world.
The German Beer Purity Law turns 500 years old on Saturday 22 April, and German beer lovers are celebrating it the best way they can - medieval re-enactments, singing and lots of beer drinking.
But what is this Purity Law, called the Reinheitsgebot in German, that was enacted in Ingolstadt in 1516.
Beer lover and editor of beer magazine Hopfenhelden, Nina Anika Klotz, explains its origins.
The purity law (Reinheitsgebot) from 1516 was an enactment from the Duke of Bayern - it was decided the beer should be made with barley. It was essentially about the management of resource: bread should be made with wheat and beer with barley to avoid resources running out, she says.
But soon the purity law became about consumer protection and it was decided that beer could only include water, barley, yeast and hops. This was to stop brewers using things like fungus or herbs that sometime led to quite undesirable results.
So beer was kept pure, and the bakers could have the wheat.
In 1871, as the German states unified in one country, Bayern insisted that the law was enforced nation-wide, an argument the state finally won in 1906 when it became law in Germany as a whole.
It meant that German brewers that added additional ingredients were not allowed to call the drink beer.
The purity law prevents German brewers from making a fruit beer for example, a beer with added fruit. They can't make a Belgian Witbier as it contains coriander and orange peel. But it also means that they can't make beers with artificial flavouring, or with corn or rice. So, it is essentially both good and bad, says Klotz.
The law is still enforced rigorously in Bayern, but in many other German states exemptions are now possible.
This was partly the work of anti-purity law warrior Helmut Fritsche, owner of Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle brewery which is about two hours west of Berlin.
After buying the brewery in 1992, he went through a ten year legal fight in order to be able to call one of his products beers, even though it contained sugar.
We fought for ten years. Fought with the Federation of Brewers, with the state government, until the High Court in 2005 decided that our black beer, that includes a pinch of sugar, could be called beer.
Fritsche now brews many beers with added natural ingredients, such as cherries, asparagus and even potatoes.
Humans are individuals and they are original, just like we say that each one of our beers is original. And people have their own taste. So then, why shouldn't we be able to cater to the varieties of taste out there?
But at the pure beer festival in Ingolstadt, there is little appetite for potato flavoured beer.
Water, barley, yeast and hops - the purity law still reigns supreme here - and they hope for another 500 years.

A beer for Werner - 500 years of the German Purity Law
Germany's National Beer Day comes round again on April 23. This year something very special is brewing: 2016 marks the 500th jubilee of the world's oldest food law. In 1516, the Bavarian co-rulers Duke Wilhelm IV and Ludwig X issued a decree in Ingolstadt to the effect that henceforth, only barley, hops and water could be used in the brewing of beer. The Reinheitsgebot was born, and its fame
