Opname mei 2008. Hortus Bulborum in Limmen (Noord Holland) is een showtuin voor bloembollen. Oude en nieuwe variëteiten staan hier in bedden te bloeien. Het is geen sierlijk aangelegd park als de Keukenhof maar evengoed erg mooi.

Hortus Bulborum in Limmen (Tulips Garden)
Hortus Bulborum is a Dutch foundation that conserves historic cultivars of spring flowering bulb- and tuber crops. The collection garden of the foundation is located at the Zuidkerkenlaan in Limmen, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, near the historic city of Alkmaar.
The collection comprises some 2500 different cultivars, of which 2000 are tulips, 115 hyacinths, circa 800 narcissus, more than 20 irises, 50 crocusses as well as some 20 different Fritillarias. The oldest tulip in the collection is the single early tulip ‘Duc van Tol Red and Yellow’, dating from 1595. [source: wikipedia]

4.000 partijtjes historische bolgewassen hoeven niet meer met de truffel worden gerooid. De Hortus Bulborum heeft een rooimachine. Vandaag werd deze gedemonstreerd aan sponsoren en belangstellenden.

Holland's treasured tulips
Hidden in the shadow of a church in the Dutch town of Limmen is Hortus Bulborum, established in the 1920s by tulip enthusiast Peter Boschman. He bought old and rare types of tulips and planted them, determined to not let them become extinct. Today Hortus Bulborum keeps alive rare varieties of one of Holland's most recognizable hallmarks. Hortus Bulborum Limmen
De stichting Hortus Bulborum beheert de enige tuin ter wereld waar inmiddels meer dan 3500 verschillende voorjaarsbolgewassen zijn verzameld, en daarmee uniek in zijn soort is. De collectie bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit tulpen, narcissen en hyacinten. Daarnaast zijn er verzamelingen Fritillaria en krokussen opgeplant, vooral van de Vernus-groep.
Bijzonder aan deze collectietuin, die overigens ook een interessante genenbank is, is dat er tevens honderden oude soorten te zien zijn, van vóór 1900, die niet of nauwelijks meer commercieel worden gekweekt. De oudste tulpensoorten stammen uit de zestiende eeuw, de Fritillaria persica werd al in 1577 werd beschreven, terwijl de vroegste bekende narcis van nog vele honderden jaren eerder dateert. Daarmee geeft de tuin een interessant overzicht van de ontwikkeling van deze grenzeloos populaire voorjaarsbloemen door de eeuwen heen.
Ontwerper
Het is te danken aan hoofdmeester Pieter Boschman, die in 1924 de basis voor de collectie legde, dat we nu nog altijd kunnen genieten van legendarische tulpen als de 'Duc van Tol Red and Yellow' (1595), de 'Zomerschoon' uit 1620 - razend populair tijdens de Tulpomanie periode - of de grillige parkiettulp 'Perfecta' uit 1750.
Doelstelling
De Hortus Bulborum is de enige bollentuin ter wereld waar ruim 3500 verschillende soorten tulpen, narcissen, hyacinten, en andere veelal historische voorjaarsbolgewassen bloeien. In deze tuin worden oude bolgewassen voor het nageslacht bewaard, die commercieel nauwelijks meer interessant zijn. De Hortus Bulborum heeft als belangrijkste doel om deze rassen in stand te houden. Elk voorjaar kleuren de veldjes in de meest uiteenlopende tinten.

The Reformed Church in Limmen is build in the 13th century on a beach shore and has a late-Romanesque tower. During the Eighty Years War the church was partially destroyed. 25 years later the church was rebuilt. Limmen is a village in the municipality of Castricum in the province of Noord-Holland. It is one of the oldest villages in this province. It lies almost directly on to Heiloo. Because of the sandy soils is Limmen become the center of the bulbs growing in Noord-Kennemerland. The annual Bloemendagen (Flowerdays) are a tradition in Limmen in the month of May. People living there make mosaics with the flowers of the Hyacinthus orientalis and set up the mosaics in front of their house.

De hervormde kerk is in de 13e eeuw gebouwd op een strandwal en heeft een laat-romaanse toren. Tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog werd de kerk gedeeltelijk verwoest. 25 jaar later werd de kerk weer opgebouwd. Limmen is een dorp in de gemeente Castricum in de provincie Noord-Holland. Het is een van de oudste dorpen in deze provincie. Het ligt vrijwel direct tegen Heiloo aan. Door de zandgronden is Limmen het centrum geworden van de bollenteelt in Noord-Kennemerland.

The Hortus Bulborum Foundation in Limmen, the Netherlands manages the unique Hortus collection garden with its 4,000 spring-flowering historical bulbs. This collection consists primarily of tulips, narcissus and hyacinths, but there is also a small number of Fritillaria and crocus, primarily the C.vernus types.
In addition to functioning as a gene bank, the garden has a seasonal display of thousands of heirloom bulbs, some of which are no longer in commercial production. Certain tulips originated in the 16th century. The Fritillaria persica on display was already in cultivation as early as 1577, while the oldest narcissus is several centuries older yet. The garden, therefore, provides a fascinating overview of these immensely popular spring bloomers grown through the centuries. Thanks to headmaster Pieter Boschman who started the collection in 1924, the visiting public has the pleasure of enjoying such legendary tulips as the 'Duc van Tol Red and Yellow '(1595), 'Zomerschoon' (1620) and very popular during the Tulipmania (1635-1637) period or the exotic parrot tulip 'Perfecta (1750) and many other fascinating examples.
