☆Bits of knowledge〜Fujin and Raijin〜
The gods of wind (Fujin) and thunder (Raijin) loom ominously atop a summit of clouds. The wooden statues, each about 3 1/2 feet high, are arranged at either end of the hall's long central platform.

Japan – Nara
Japan's first permanent capital, established in the year 710, today Nara remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest and largest temples. Todaiji's main hall, the world's largest wooden building, houses one of the world’s largest (15 m tall) bronze statues of Buddha. The famous Nara park is home to nearly 1200 freely roaming deer, a symbol of the city and a natural treasure. Also in Nara I found my favourite sweet in the whole entire world - mochi, made by Nakatanidou, the fastest mochi pounders in Japan. They perform high-speed mochitsuki at the shop, churning out hundreds of pieces of mochi fresh and warm from the pounding. Nakatanidou's specialty is yomogi mochi. (yomogi is a Japanese wild plant also known as mugwort, and gives the mochi its natural green color and refreshing taste). Shot on Panasonic G85 with Voigtlander 10.5mm and Lumix G 18-35mm lenses. Graded in DaVinci Resolve.

Tofukuji Temple, Kyoto, Japan, 10/13/2016
Tofukuji (東福寺, Tōfukuji) is a large Zen temple in southeastern Kyoto that is particularly famous for its spectacular autumn colors. The temple was founded in 1236 at the behest of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Its name is a combination of the names of two great temples in Nara that were also associated with the Fujiwara, Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple. Tofukuji has historically been one of the principal Zen temples in Kyoto, and is a head temple of one of the schools of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.
In autumn, people come from all over Japan to see Tofukuji's autumn colors. The most popular view is of the Tsutenkyo Bridge, which spans a valley of lush maple trees. The view from the bridge is equally spectacular, and the 100 meter long, covered walkway becomes extremely crowded when the colors reach their peak, usually around mid to late November.

Amazing Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in Kyoto
About a 30-minute train ride from Kyoto is the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest or Sagano Bamboo Forest. Considered one of Kyoto’s top sights, the bamboo grove is one of the most photographed sights in the city. But no picture can capture the feeling of standing in the middle of this sprawling forest. As you walk along the path surrounded by soaring stalks of bamboo on both sides, you get the feeling that you’re in another world. You can access the forest directly from the main street of Arashiyama but it’s best paired with a visit to Tenryu-ji Temple.

Kongobuji Temple - Wakayama - 金剛峯寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in the heart of Koyasan, Kongobuji was originally constructed in 1593 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to commemorate the death of his mother. Later Kongobuji was merged with a neighboring temple and reorganized into the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, the sect introduced to Japan by Kobo Daishi in 805 and headquartered on Koyasan.
While modest from the outside, Kongobuji is actually a vast temple with several beautiful rooms featuring amazing painted sliding doors like the huge Ohiroma Room for which was used for important rituals and ceremonies. Once you navigate through the temple’s many corridors and rooms you will be welcomed by a beautiful zen garden. The Banryutei Rock Garden, built in 1984 represents a pair of dragons emerging from a sea of clouds.

Kotoku-in Temple
The temple is renowned for its Great Buddha, a monumental outdoor bronze statue of Amida Buddha which is one of the most famous icons of Japan. It was preceded by a giant wooden Buddha, which was completed in 1243. That wooden statue was damaged by a storm in 1248, and the hall containing it was destroyed, so Joko suggested making another statue of bronze. The hall was destroyed by a storm in 1334, was rebuilt, and was damaged by yet another storm in 1369, and was rebuilt yet again. The last building housing the statue was washed away in the tsunami of September 20, 1498, during the Muromachi period. Since then, the Great Buddha has stood in the open air.

Kamakura Daibutsu (Great Buddha 大仏), Kamakura, Japan
Kamakura Daibutsu (鎌倉大仏) Temple (actual temple name is Kotoku-in Temple) is located in the suburbs of Kamakura district of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. The main attraction at this temple is the very large seated Buddha statue called Daibutsu.
This Daibutsu (Great Buddha) statue was cast in bronze in 1252. The height of the statue is about 35 feet and it weighs 100000 Kilos (100 Tonnes). This statue is the second largest bronze cast, seated Great Buddha statue in Japan. The largest one is in the Todaiji temple in Nara prefecture.
You can also climb into the Buddha statue, through a small and narrow staircase.
The original Daibutsu statue was inside a temple and under a roof but during the tsunami in 1495, the temple was washed away leaving the Daibutsu statue in it's place. Since then, it is decided to build around the statue and the Daibutsu statue has been left as it is, without a roof.
It is a great sight to watch this statue with the great mountain range background.
Enjoy!!!
Bamboo Forest in Kamakura - SO BEAUTIFUL!! Tokyo Day Trip
The most calm and beautiful bamboo forest - such a tranquil atmosphere and possibly the highlight of the Tokyo trip!
We travelled from Enoshima to Kamakura on the Enoden Electric Railway. There are so many Japanese shrines and temples in Kamakura, and it's an easy day trip from Tokyo, just an hour by train on the Odakyu line.
We walked from Kamakura Station to Hokokuji Temple, also known as the bamboo temple, stopping off at a large temple on the way, which was really beautiful with the greenery, the red bridge and flags - I just love the colours!
Hokokuji Temple has a Japanese garden and bamboo forest - it's more of a garden than a forest really, but it was amazing to see the tall bamboo and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. I really loved it there!
The maps app I mention is Ulmon City Maps 2 Go - they're not sponsoring the video or anything, it was just really useful and I'd totally recommend it for offline maps if you're going to Tokyo (and it's free to download).
SUBSCRIBE for more Tokyo videos - next we'll be going to Odaiba - and enjoying the seaside park on a sunny day this time!
