Russia - Circus Animals Retire To Moscow Refuge
T/I 10:24:21
CIRCUS ANIMALS RETIRE TO MOSCOW REFUGE
Russia Natural sound Duration: 3.25
There are signs of hope for Russia's animals who are the innocent
victims of the increasingly troubled economy of the ex-Soviet
Union. Moscow's first old-age home for retired circus animals has
been established. Residents at the refuge include an elephant,
camel and a bear. Other Muscovites do what they can to relieve
suffering of abandoned animals, collecting leftover foodscraps and
converting existing structures. Two bears now live in a cement
bunker after a venture to make money with them failed. Financial
difficulties also affect the zoos, such as Simpferopol in the
Ukraine which suffers from a lack of goverment funding. In
desperation, staff parade the animals around town, seeking
donations to replace their pitifully cramped cages. In Moscow's
bird market cruel conditions are the norm for exotic animals
brought here from around the world. The Russian Society for the
Protection of Animals is pushing for legislation to protect
animals. Draft laws are currently being examined by the State
Duma.

animals, who can't live without them, who have had them for a long
time, and who took them off the streets, they eat the same bones
that their dogs eat. They pick through garbage bins. There are
members of our society that make cutlets from fish skins, and we
are glad they can survive that way. So the situation with animals
is very bad, it is very tragic and the worst thing is that we
don't have any mutual understanding on the part of the
government. Cu poster (english) of world society for protection

Hippos are the stars of a Siberian circus show
Three 10-year-old hippopotamuses perform tricks at a controversial Siberian circus in Russia. Zlat, Yana & Aida are now the stars of the spectacle that organisers say is 'one-of-a-kind' in the world. But, footage filmed inside the circus in Krasnoyarsk shows the animals being forced perform tricks in a setting that is a very far cry from their natural habitat. Hippos are known to be quite aggressive - but these young animals have been trained since they were only 1. Their handler says the show is completely safe for spectators. The circus travels across Russia, Eastern Europe & Asia.

This video shows Buttermilk being brought to her new home and introduced to Lorne for the first time. It is immediately following her adoption out of 'death row' at the shelter and walking her in the front door. Lorne was brought in through the backyard moments later. They have never met before this. Not outside or through the fence. Buttermilk doesn't know me, the house, Lorne or any of the other animals who are present though do not have currently have access to the main part of the house. I thought it would be interesting to show how they (especially Lorne) handled the situation.
You can see that Buttermilk is very unsure. Lorne begins with utter excitement. He wants to play and is doing his best to initiate it. About halfway through this almost 7 minute video, you will see he already realizes his energy level is too much for Buttermilk and he begins to calm down. He starts to lose interest and investigate other things. Buttermilk then relaxes her guard a little and she is able to observe the situation without as much tension. At this point, the next time Lorne is distracted (by a slice of cake on the counter) I crate Lorne, so Buttermilk feels secure in being the one to approach on her own.
The next morning, I introduced them to the large open space of the backyard 'pen' together. And the rest of the animals. I filmed that too and will upload it as soon as I can.
I also felt that this video was important to show just how intense wolves and (most) wolfdogs are. Lorne is not always bursting at the seams with excitement to meet a new friend, but his selective hearing, high energy, intelligence, and disregard for the environment around him is always there.
Wolves and wolfdogs are destructive and can be dangerous. But they they do not mean to be- it is simply who they are. It cannot be trained, tamed, or controlled. To do that would be cruelty. You must be willing to adapt to them. They are wild animals and acceptance of that is what they deserve. They are under no obligation to follow the laws of man.

A picturesque house in nature, this is a weekend farm and cottage with a house called 'Dacha' and a garden. About 70% of Russian urban people own multi-cars, and I was very excited to be invited to this place, which is one of the richest riches in Russia with a swimming pool. This is a Russian house. I'm going to rest here and make a shashly (a traditional Russian skewer). The owner enjoys relaxing here with his children and friends. The Russians live like this: An ornate car that reveals the majesty of a mansion made of logs! Oh, this is shampoo. It 's a sword used to make skewer chalcedony. And here is a stone fireplace. The Russians love the fireplace so much rest here. Without this stone fireplace, it's not a Russian house. I like collecting Russians, I keep the gun used in the war. Very large studded car with four rooms on the second floor only! In Russia, which loves multi-car, it is said that multi-car diplomacy and multi-politics have become commonplace and culture. It has a private walkway that allows you to enjoy the mysterious landscapes. From a very long time ago, there was a villa culture called 'Dhaka'. The Russians originally lived in the huts, so they were all huts. So, Russians like trees and their little haven. From there, this culture is very much like me. In the late 1970s, Russia had to distribute 600 square meters of land to the people free of charge, and it became deeply rooted in the lives of Russians...

AIDS deaths surge in Russia as global health officials say, 'They did it all wrong'
Central Asia and Eastern Europe have the world’s fastest growing HIV epidemic, and Russia accounts for more than 80 percent of those infections. As at-risk groups like injection drug users are stigmatized and ignored, health officials say the death toll will soon top 30,000 lives per year. William Brangham reports in the first of the NewsHour series, The End of AIDS: Far from Over.

Video: World's biggest Quran in Russia's hands
There are no limits to love of God, or the prophet's word. And a special new edition of the Muslim sacred text certainly speaks volumes. The world's biggest Koran, decorated with precious stones and gold, now belongs to Russia. This hefty holy book requires not only strong devotion, but also strong arms to read, as it weighs a mammoth 800 kilograms and boasts 632 pages sized two by one and a half meters. The gold- and silver-encrusted cover studded with malachite and semi-precious stones holds a giant turquoise 14 centimeters in diameter. The price of this opulent opus is unknown, but it took over a year to make. The carefully crafted Koran was ordered from Italy for the Foundation on Restoring Cultural and Historical Heritage in Russia's republic of Tatarstan. And it's certainly got a spirited reception. This edition of the Koran has become a precious gift to all Russian Muslims, says the Islamic spiritual leader of Tatarstan, Ildus Faizov. The unique edition now resides in a mosque within the Kremlin of the city of Kazan. Next summer, the weighty holy tome will be moved to Bolgary -- a Tatarstan region which embraced Islam as its official religion in 922. The next largest edition of the Koran resides in South Sumatra, Indonesia. This wooden version was long hailed as the world's biggest. But it isn't in fact a book -- this holy scripture consists of 315 wooden planks for carved pages -- each 177 centimeters tall, 140 centimeters wide and 2.5 centimeters thick. Another huge Koran was also discovered in Indonesia, in an Islamic boarding school in West Java. This one is a whopping 200 centimeters tall and 140 centimeters wide. In 2009, Abu Dhabi book fair sold an Indonesian Koran manuscript, sized 120cm by 80cm.

Animal Rights Let Ringling Circus Managers Know We're Gonna Make You Famous
RINGLING BROS. CIRCUS ARE THE LARGEST CRUELTY CRIMINALS IN U.S. HISTORY FINED $270,000 FOR 27 FEDERAL AWA VIOLATIONS AND CONVICTED BY GOVERNMENT FOR FEDERAL ELEPHANT TORTURE
--SEARCH-- CNN RINGLING ABUSE ON YOU TUBE FOR NEWS COVERAGE
Animals used in circuses such as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey live a dismal life in which they are dominated, confined, and violently trained. Workers routinely beat, shock, and whip them until they learn to perform ridiculous tricks that make no sense to them.
Most elephants used by circuses were captured in the wild. Once removed from their families and natural habitat, their lives consist of little more than chains and intimidation. Some baby elephants are born on breeding farms, where they are torn away from their mothers, tethered with ropes, and kept in isolation until they learn to fear their trainers. Throughout their lifetime, all that they will ever know is extreme loneliness and beatings with sharp bullhooks.
Starting with a 2009 investigation, PETA has documented cruelty to more than 20 elephants ranging in age from just 2 years old to at least 54who are on the road with Ringling. These sensitive and intelligent animals have spent an average of 30-plus years with the circus, and four elephants have each been in Ringling's possession for 43 long years.
Meet just a few of Ringling's unwilling performers on the Blue Unit:
Barack is a 2-year-old elephant born at Ringling's Florida breeding compound. He is forced to endure life on the road with his mother, Bonnie, whose lack of natural, maternal behavior toward Barack has alarmed elephant experts. In early 2010 and again in 2011, Barack was diagnosed with the elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV), a common killer of young, captive-born Asian elephants. EEHV is associated with stress, and symptoms include a pale or bluish tongue, swelling of the head and neck, and lethargy. Death is caused by massive internal hemorrhaging and heart failure. Barack was pulled from the show after his second diagnosis, and Ringling has not spoken publicly of his fate since then.
Sara is a 9yearold survivor of the cruel training practices used by Ringling that were brought to light by whistleblower Sam Haddock. She is underweight, as is indicated by her very sunken face and prominent skull bones. Sara has suffered from chronic lameness since early 2009, but Ringling has not conducted adequate diagnostics, developed a treatment plan, or ensured that she receives prescribed treatments. Sara displays a high intensity and frequency of abnormal behaviors, including swaying and head-bobbing. She appears to be nervous around people and shows fear responses toward her trainer. She frequently thumps her trunk on the ground, an common indicator of anxiety, and she may walk with her mouth open, a sign of abdominal discomfort or thirst.
Karen is a 42yearold elephant who was born in the wild in Asia. Experts have deemed her to be in such poor condition that the humane option would be to allow her to retire. Late in 2010, Karen was granted a reprieve and permitted to stop traveling, but as of March 2011, she is back with the Blue Unit. Karen is being forced to perform unnatural tricks such as lifting a basket with a dog inside it with her mouth while standing on a rotating pedestal despite needing veterinary care for dental problems and overgrown, inflexible foot pads, a condition that is painful and predisposes her to osteoarthritis.
Meet some of the elephants forced to travel with Ringling's Red Unit:
Tonka was born in captivity and has been with Ringling since about 1989. PETA captured on video an incident in which the 28yearold elephant was hooked behind the ear, causing her to scream and bleed, while the elephants were being walked from the arena to the train in Austin, Texas. Her brother, Kenny, suffered a worse fate. In 1998, 3yearold Kenny, who had been bleeding from his rectum and was clearly very sick, died alone in a stall after being forced to perform despite being sick. As a result, Ringling was charged with violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act and paid $20,000 in an out-of-court settlement.
Angelica, 14, has been held captive by Ringling since the day that she was born. In 1999, a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report stated that there were large lesions on Angelica's leg, and a Ringling employee said that the scars were caused by rope burns resulting from the violent and terrifying process of separating Angelica from her mother. In January 2006, the USDA cited Ringling for causing trauma, behavioral stress, physical harm, and unnecessary discomfort to Angelica and another elephant who suffered injuries after the two elephants ran amok while performing in Puerto Rico.
Help the elephants who are held captive and beaten by Ringling Bros. Take action now!
