City Alley Tour No. 1, -The Old Alley is Alive_도심골목투어, 옛 골목은 살아있다.
The old alley has been forgotten by people, but still has its old history.
It is Namseong-ro Yakjeon Alley where is filled with the scents of medicinal herbs.
In the corner of the alley, there is an eye-catching Gothic building.
It is a chapel of the First Presbyterian Church of Daegu, the oldest Presbyterian church in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
This Gothic-style brick building was designated as one of the Daegu Tangible Cultural Heritages, because the church has preserved the modern history of Daegu.
The entrance consists of three arch gates and the porch over the entrance has a good view. The windows of the bell tower are decorated with a variety of designs and the soaring spire is formed in the shape of octagon.
In summer time, the red church building gets covered with ivy and people come to paint or take pictures of its magnificent look.
The Gyesan Catholic Church, another Western-style church building, is located not far from the First Presbyterian Church of Daegu.
This Gothic-style building of the Catholic Church is the first modern architecture of the Yeongnam area. It was originally built as a cross-shaped traditional Korean house in 1899, but it was severely damaged by fire and was rebuilt as a Gothic building in 1902.
The Gyesan Catholic Church is well known for its history longer than 100 years, as a place where Cardinal Kim Su-hwan was ordained as a priest, and for the wedding of former president Park Chung-hee and Yuk Yeong-su.
So to speak, it was a stage for many important events of Korean modern history.
Also, there is a persimmon tree standing at the corner of the church.
It is Lee In-seong Tree, which is named after a genius painter of Daegu.
This tree appears in his painting titled 'The Gyesandong Catholic Church' in the mid-1930s.
In many ways, the Gyesan Catholic Church preserves the history of Daegu and the stories of its people.
While walking along the road decorated with pictures on the wall and poems written on the ground, you would face an old house. It is the House of Seo Sang-don who led the Redemption of the National Debt Movement and Lee Sang-hwa, the national poet of Korea.
The quiet old house got crowded because of the street theater hosted by Daegu Arts and Culture Foundation.
It was a great chance to learn the patriotism of our ancestors such as Seo Sang-don and Lee Sang-hwa.
The old alley keeps the modern history of Daegu.
Why don't we travel this old alleyfortheselivestories?
