HAMBURG Germany City Guide | Top Things to See, Do and Eat
Are you planning a trip to Hamburg, Germany and don't know where to start, what to do, and where to stay? This travel guide will help you plan your itinerary here. Open this up to learn more ↓
Over the years I've had a chance to explore a many number of regions of Germany including big cities and smaller towns but there's nothing quite like the experience I had in Hamburg. What I experienced was something so profoundly exciting and energizing, I was completely blown away. Hamburg is a city of contrasts - young and the classic, rivers for making money and others for spending money, red light districts juxtaposed against hipster neighbourhoods, and plenty of opportunities to party but also ways to chill out and relax. The possibilities are endless in this maritime city!

Welcome to Hamburg! How much could you really tell me about Hamburg? If you’re like me, then before setting out to this criminally overlooked city, you might have only known it as one of the big German cities that isn’t Berlin. I’m here to tell you that it’s so, so much more than that, and I can’t believe I went so long without visiting. Hamburg is a city on the water, and as Europe’s third-largest port, Hamburg is known as Germany’s ‘Gateway to the World’. The river Elbe is the source - the main artery that brings Hamburg to life. From river tours pacing the canals of the Speicherstadt to the container ships loaded by crane in the Harbour, trade and prosperity brought to Hamburg by the river Elbe shaped the city from its foundations. But not everything great in Hamburg sails down the Elbe. From sky-scraping concert
halls .. to miniature model railways. From Vegas-style red light district nightlife .. to cool, underground gourmet burger restaurants. Hamburg is a modern, global city with a rich history and culture, with something to fascinate everyone. We’re Jake and Tom, from Holiday Extras, and this is our Hamburg Adventure. On our first day, we’re going to see the sights the way Hamburg sells them. The full-blown Tourist experience, visiting Hamburg’s most highly recommended tourist experiences, to let you know if they make the cut. On Day 2? We loosen up a little. Find our own way. Indulge our flights of fancy, and do Hamburg the way we wanted. Indulge ourselves! We wanted to find out what Hamburg had to offer that was perfect for Jake and Tom. The two days of our trip turned out to be so different - and I hope you find what we learned useful. We learned a lot! But what surprised me the most about this trip was how fun it can be to just chase my curiosity - and break my own expectations. Our adventure started at Gatwick Airport - filling up on free breakfast in the lounge to prepare for the journey ahead. From the airport it was easy - we booked a transfer in advance - and before long we were at our accommodation, resting up before our Hamburg trip truly began. We kicked off Day One the way any good day starts - with a coffee. There are plenty of places along the river to grab a pretty great coffee, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try my first ever big pretzel. (WHICH was great, by the way.) Charged with coffee and pretzels, we were ready to go - now it was time to get stuck in to Hamburg’s most highly recommended things to do. Hamburg is a city on the water. In central Hamburg, the river Elbe divides off into smaller, narrower canals that interlace a beautiful district called the Speicherstadt, which means ‘City of Warehouses’. The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world- Ignore me - it’s actually the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations. Fun fact - this case, they’re made of Oak! Which makes it a big tourist attraction, and it consistently comes up as one of the most recommended places to visit in Hamburg. Now having been here ourselves? Totally agree with that. It’s beautiful, you have lovely views of the river, it’s really nice to walk around, lots of places to grab a coffee and just… just waste some time, y’know? There’s lots of other attractions that are based here as well because it’s so popular with tourists, so it’s definitely somewhere you should have on your list. Some of the most picturesque places in the city are around the Speicherstadt, and most city and harbour tours will go through here. The iconic warehouse facades are one of the most recognisable sites in Hamburg. Although we could have easily wandered back and forth over the canal bridges all morning, sipping coffee and admiring the architecture, it was time to move on. And we had a little place in mind. So this next place calls itself one of the epicentres of hamburg tourism. We’re gonna go see what we think about it for ourselves - it’s called Miniature Wonderland, or as far as I can tell in the German written name, Miniatur Wunderland? Let’s go find out!
Living in Hamburg: Tips on the Best Spots from a Local
hosco toured Hamburg with Carolin Marks, Bar Manager at the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, and discovered there’s lots to love about Germany’s second largest city.
Carolin Marks, a graduate of IUBH in Bonn, moved to Hamburg from Berlin to work at the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, and since settling in, she has no plans of leaving. Carolin says that the only downside of the port city is the unpredictable weather—but, when the weather is nice, there’s lots to take advantage of. Lakes, parks, the old town, as well as a modern and thriving business area mean that the city offers something to almost everyone. Listen in as Carolin shares her tips for shopping, eating, partying, and enjoying a day off in Hamburg.

Hamburg Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Hamburg in Germany.
Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes and provides a good standard of living for its inhabitants.
Although known as a harbor city, Hamburg is located on the River Elbe and is more than 100 kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river, the sheltered harbor is accessible to large containerships.
The Speicherstadt is part of the harbor and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting.
The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. It is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany with its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive.
City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by 4,000 oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster.
Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world, a European harbor that contains the spirit of distant lands!

The city of Hamburg has a well-deserved reputation as Germany's Gateway to the World. It is the country's biggest port and the second-busiest in Europe, despite being located astride the River Elbe, some 100 kilometres from the North Sea. It is also Germany's second largest city with a population of over 1.8 million and the Greater Hamburg Metropolitan Region has a population of over four million. Hamburg is proud of its status as a Free and Hanseatic City and thus shares the same status as a province, making up one of Germany's 16 federal-states or Bundesländer.
Top tip: Most hotel offers you a travel card that allows you to travel on bus, tram and metro for free including the famous ferry 63 ride.
Townhall:
Hamburg's impressive city hall (Rathaus) was built in 1897 out of sandstone in Neo-Renaissance style, including a 112 m tower. Inside there are several magnificent halls used for representative purposes and sittings of government and parliament.
Harbour:
Landungsbrücken (landing bridges), the most touristy part of Hamburg's harbour, close to the metro station with the same name. Piers connected with several bridges swim on the water adapting to the tide. There tourism boats land and you will find tourist shops, restaurants, and snack bars. The sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers can be visited.
Reeperbahn Red Light District:
Another Hamburg landmark is the Reeperbahn in Sankt Pauli. It's probably one of the most famous red-light districts in the world. From vaudeville to prostitutes, from bars to sex-shops, you can find an assortment of attractions. Plus, it is frequently visited by a lot of travelers to go shopping for a huge variety of sex-related articles and toys. This is probably one of very few places worldwide where all shopkeepers give you serious and open advice on all kinds of sex-related articles.
Planten un Blomen is a park in the city with an emphasis on flower displays. Subway station Dammtor.
St. Michaeliskirche Protestant baroque church, the building as it is known today was built in 1786.
