Hacienda Heights, California - Hsi Lai Temple HD (2014)
Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple (Chinese: 佛光山西來寺; pinyin: Fóguāngshān Xīlái Sì) is a traditional Chinese Buddhist mountain monastery in the United States, one of the largest of its kind in the North American continent. It is located on the foothill region of Hacienda Heights, California, a suburb of Los Angeles County. The name Hsi Lai means Coming West in the sense of the Great Buddhadharma Coming West.
The temple is affiliated Fo Guang Shan, one of Taiwan's largest Buddhist organizations. It is the order's first overseas branch temple, and serves as the North America regional headquarters for Fo Guang Shan. Hsi Lai was the site of the founding of Buddha's Light International Association, established in 1991. The temple, like its mother temple in Taiwan, practices Humanistic Buddhism, which incorporates all of the eight traditional schools of Chinese Buddhism - especially the Linji Chan and Pure Land schools - to provide guidance deemed most useful to modern life.

Dang, Buddha, you've got one gorgeous place of worship.
Came during the Thousand Buddha Repentance Service, held for Chinese New Year. They had people park at a school a few blocks away and had people take an air-conditioned shuttle up to the temple.
When we passed a ridge of homes and started to see the temple buildings there was a collective gasp at their majesty. On the way, we passed these cute monk decorations along the road. We were dropped at the Mountain Gate, and made our way up the steps.
People began their trek toward the temple by gathering and honoring the statues at the entrance. As you pass through the Bodhisattva Hall, you find your way into this courtyard with at the base of the very vibrant main shrine. It's tranquil and beautiful and one could imagine being in China's Forbidden City here.
There are all sorts of festivities going on around the temple grounds. A woman handed me a small rubber mallet and told me to hit this bell as hard as I could in a certain spot, because it would be heard in heaven. Since most people tapped it, I took a pretty hard whack and she jumped back and laughed at my enthusiasm.
After launching a couple coins with red ribbons attached onto a tree (for a donation), Brandon D. and I made it up the stairs into the main shrine. It was beautiful and despite crowds was quite peaceful. Please don't disrupt this by pulling out the camera. Leave some things sacred for other people.
Of course the highly photographed Arhat Garden with all the gold and white statues is.. well, picturesque. I feel stupid looking at all the statues and giggling thinking of that ridiculous one of Michael Jackson and Bubbles by Jeff Koons. It just kept coming to mind, like what if someone bought it and stuck it with the others just to mess with you. Anyway...
Simply put, Hsi Lai Temple is sublime. It's easy on the eyes and everyone I encountered was quite warm in their reception.
HSI LAI TEMPLE, CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION, 2020, 3456 GLENMARK DR, HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CA 91745
Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China, and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia. Observances traditionally take place from the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February. In 2020, the first day of the Chinese New Year will be on Saturday, 25 January, initiating the Year of the Rat.
Chinese New Year is a major holiday in China, and has strongly influenced Lunar new year celebrations of China's neighbouring cultures, including the Korean New Year (seol), the Tết of Vietnam, and the Losar of Tibet. It is also celebrated worldwide in regions and countries with significant Overseas Chinese or Sinophone populations, including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Mauritius, as well as many in North America and Europe.
Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely, and the evening preceding Chinese New Year's Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include that of good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. For the northern regions of China, dumplings are featured prominently in meals celebrating the festival. It often serves as the first meal of the year either at midnight or as breakfast of the first day.
The Zodiacal Rat is the first of the repeating 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac, constituting part of the Chinese calendar system (with similar systems in use elsewhere). The Year of the Rat in standard Chinese is (Chinese: 鼠年; pinyin: shǔnián); the rat is associated with the first branch of the Earthly Branch symbol 子 (zǐ), which starts a repeating cycle of twelve years. The Chinese word shǔ (鼠) may refer to rat, mouse, or other muroid-type animal. There are also a yearly month of the rat and a daily hour of the rat (Chinese double hour, midnight, 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.). Years of the rat are cyclically differentiated by correlation to the Heavenly Stems cycle, resulting in a repeating cycle of five years of the rat (over a sixty-year period), each rat year also being associated with one of the Chinese wu xing, also known as the five elements.
Hsi Lai Temple, the North American Regional Headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, was built to serve as a spiritual and cultural center for those interested in learning more about Buddhism and Chinese culture. It is the intention of its founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, to propagate Humanistic Buddhism and to create a Pure Land here on earth. Hsi Lai Temple is built to fulfill these goals in the United States.
Situated in Hacienda Heights in the Los Angeles county, Hsi Lai Temple is one of the largest Buddhist temples in North America. The temple’s foundational ideology is Humanistic Buddhism which seeks to propagate Buddhist teachings through education, cultural outreach, community services, and spiritual practice. In this pursuit, Hsi Lai Temple has hosted numerous local and international events, including Chinese Spring Festival which, during its two week period, welcomes an average of 20,000 visitors per day.
Hsi Lai Temple encompasses 15 acres and a floor area of over 100,000 square feet. The temple’s architecture, gardens and statuary are faithful to the traditional style of Chinese monasteries from the Ming (1268—1644) and Qing (1644—1911) dynasties. The ten-year planning and construction was completed in 1988. Hsi Lai means “Coming to the West” and signifies the dedication of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order to spread the teachings of the Buddha to those in the West. The International Buddhist Progress Society, a nonprofit organization, is the chartered name for the temple.

Hsi Lai Temple ( largest Buddhist temple in the U.S.A. )
The Hsi Lai Temple, which is located in Hacienda Heights California, is the largest and biggest Temple of Buddhism in the U.S.A, and according to them, the largest in the entire western Hemisphere. It was one of the most beautiful and prettiest religious establishments that I have ever seen. I can honestly tell you it's much more prettier then the most elaborate of our Christian Churches. The Buddha statues, paintings, buildings, and even the plants is enough for you to go to this Temple, which is absolutely Free!!! All you really need to pay for is the Buddhist food, which was actually really good. It's only 8 bucks for all you can eat. Oh, I did forget, the museum is one dollar, but that a small price to pay for all the amazing things you get to see. I think I located the correct word to describe all of this: Amazement. The His Lai Temple is truly Amazing! Amazing and Grand!!

What to See at the Hsi Lai Temple
The largest Chinese temple in the United States, Hsi Lai Temple covers 15 acres. It is designed in accordance with Ming (1268-1644 AD) and Ching (1644-1911) dynasty Chinese architecture, and includes several traditional temple buildings, gardens and statuary. The buildings include: a pagoda, a large main shrine building, a bodhisattva shrine, classrooms, a tea room, garden, museum, vegetarian cafeteria, and gift shop. The official website provides an excellent map of the complex.
The main shrine is the most important building in the temple; it is dedicated to Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha. At the front of the shrine are three large Buddha statues: Sakaymuni Buddha in the center; Amitabha Buddha on the left; and the Medicine Buddha on the right. The latter two Buddhas are especially venerated in Pure Land Buddhism.
Across the courtyard, the Bodhisattva Hall contains statues of the five main bodhisattvas and is entered through three doors representing the Three Jewels or Refuges (the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha).
Hsi Lai is a working monastery in addition to a temple, with a number of monks and nuns living in the complex. The monks and nuns of Hsi Lai provide a variety of classes and special events, including weekly lectures on Buddhism and classes as well as workshops on Chinese culture and language. There are weekly prayer services at Hsi Lai Temple on Saturdays and Sundays, including the recitation of the Diamond Sutra and Amitabha Sutra. Meditation sessions are also held, as well as week-long meditation retreats. See the calendar of events for details.
Hsi Lai Temple welcomes visitors (see below for hours and directions) and audio guides on a Walkman are available at the Information Center. Guided tours are provided for groups of 15 people or more (call ahead). The cafeteria serves a Chinese and Taiwanese home-style cooking vegetarian lunch buffet and salad bar for $5 from 11am to 1pm.
