The Huangpu is a 113 kilometres (70 mi)-long river in China flowing through Shanghai. It is the last significant tributary of the Yangtze before it empties into the East China Sea. The Bund and Lujiazui are located along the river.
Huangpu River is the largest river in Shanghai, with Suzhou Creek being its major tributary.
It is an average of 400 meters wide and 9 meters deep. It divides the city into two regions: Pudong to its east and Puxi to the west. (Dong and Xi mean 'East' and 'West' respectively in Mandarin Chinese.)

Huangpu River Cruise:
Huangpu River, a symbol of Shanghai, originates in Dianshan Lake and empties into the Yangtze River at Wusongkou (mouth of Wusong River). It is 114 kilometers (71miles) long and 400 meters (0.25 miles) wide. It is ice-free year round. The river divides Shanghai into east and west. It is a silent eyewitness to Shanghai's history and its development.
Scenery along the River
A spectacular sight is that the two suspension bridges, Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge, appear to arch over the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, resembling 'Two dragons playing with a ball'.
The west bank (Puxi) of the Huangpu River is the cultural, residential and entertainment center of Shanghai. The Bund, Monument to the People's Heroes, Waibaidu Bridge and the oldest park in Shanghai - Huangpu Park, are located on the west bank. In addition, many historical buildings left over from Shanghai's colonial days have been preserved. The east bank of the river (Pudong) is the newer district of Shanghai and its financial and commercial hub. Steel and glass structures are abundant here. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jin Mao Tower, skyscraper hotels, offices and malls of the Lujiazui Financial Zone are located on this side of the river.
Ships from all over the world dot the river. The busy wharfs and the 'three-layer waters' (or three-color waters) at Wusongkou are also within sight. The 'three-layer waters' is formed by the convergence of Huangpu River (gray white), Yangtze River (yellow) and the East Sea (green) during high tide.

This short video provides a contemporary look at Shanghai's historic Huangpu district. Filmed in October 2010, this high definition video provides a candid glimpse of everyday life in a city of 20 million inhabitants. Huangpu is located on the west bank of the Huangpu River in the heart of Shanghai. It encompasses the world-famous Nanjing Road and Old Shanghai. This central area is busy, noisy, smoggy and above all, action-packed!

HUANGPU RIVER
Huangpu River is a branch of great River Yangtze which passes through Shanghai before finally emptying into South China Sea. It is also called mother river of Shanghai. Previously known as Chunshen, Huangpu River is 114 km long with an average width of 400 meters and depth of 30 feet. It originates from Tai Lake near Suzhou; hence also called Suzhou River. Twenty-nine kilometers before falling into Yangtze River, Huangpu passes through the central part of Shanghai city and divides the city into east and west, locally known as Puxi (eastern part) and Pudong (western part). The river cruise in this part of the city opens a great vistas for the cruisers. It is a traditional tourist place with magnificent attractions. In the center of Shanghai near Baidu Bridge, River Wusong (also called Suzhou River) falls into Huangpu River. Then both rivers fall into Yangtze 29 km downwards. There are splendid and magnificent buildings on both banks of the River Huangpu when it crosses the center of Shanghai, particularly around the Bund on the west bank which is a romantic place of vacation and common gathering.
East side of the River is called Pudong or modern Shanghai and west side is called Puxi or classical Shanghai. In simple words great Towers and magnificent modern buildings are in Pudong while Bund and classical European style buildings are in Puxi. The Bund is perhaps the best place in Shanghai and one of the most important places in whole of China.

Ferry across the Huangpu River
There were previously frequent ferry services operating by Shanghai Ferry from wharves on and near the Bund. The most popular remaining ferry service runs from Jinling Road wharf, near the southern end of the Bund, to Dongchang Road wharf, at the southern end of Lujiazui across the river. A full fare ride on the ferry costs 2 RMB.

Description: Huangpu River is a silent eyewitness to Shanghai’s history and its (crazy) development. Unfortunately, cruising on the river has become a must for most visitors to the city so it’s full of tourists (again, people who take pictures with their iPads). That being said, it’s a must do activity, especially if you only have a few days in Shanghai. I don’t remember the company name, but it departed from here. I took the night tour which departed at 7pm, and it was very packed but very beautiful.

Shanghai just opened the final stretch of its 45 kilometers (marathon distance!) along the Huangpu River and bund. The paths take in a number of the city’s historic and heritage sites. It has seating along the way, gorgeous plantings and river views.

SHANGHAI - The Bund & Huangpu River cruise
“Once a year go someplace you’ve never been before.” – Dalai Lama
We had already learned that Shanghai is China’s largest city and has a massive population of 25 million (yes that is equivalent to the entire population of Australia ... incomprehensible), and with so many things to do and see in Shanghai we prepared ourselves for a whirlwind 2 days.
As we travelled over the stately Nanpu Bridge, we silently admired the awesome Huangpu River and surrounding views. We then gracefully looped around the spiralling roadways while our knowledgeable tour guide clarified the differences in architecture on the eastern and western sections of the river. He pinpointed some of the modern mega high-rise buildings on the eastern side aka “New Shanghai” and explained the significance of the historical European buildings on the western side aka “Old Shanghai”.
On our arrival to the Bund we were given some free time to explore this famous waterfront promenade. We were fascinated by the large ships travelling along the river and marvelled at the huge variety of architectural styles on both sides. Of course, the best way to admire Shanghai's classic skyline views is on a river cruise (keep reading to find out about our night river cruise).
Our final day of sightseeing in Shanghai started with an optional maglev train experience. What is Maglev? A floating vehicle for land transportation that is supported by either electromagnetic attraction or repulsion. This is the world's first and only commercialized maglev train line in operation and has a highest speed of 431 km/h, the whole journey (30km) is covered in only 8 minutes. Of course, our tour guide challenged us to photograph the moment the 2 trains passed each other on the tracks. Even with warnings and a countdown it was an impossible feat, the best we could do was to video the iconic moment.
Next, we headed to the Shanghai Museum, a large and renowned museum with over 120,000 precious artistic relics from more than 5,000 years ago. The marvellous galleries displayed precious bronze, ceramics, paintings and calligraphies, as well as valuable jades, coins, Chinese seals, furniture and sculptures. It was an amazing opportunity to understand the profound Chinese history and culture, and escape the heat and humidity (ahhh).
In the afternoon, we enjoyed some free time and had a little nap to recharge our batteries before venturing back to the Huangpu River for our (optional) night river cruise. We had been given a heads-up as to the best vantage spot for getting great photos and videos of the buildings and lights, and it seems that this message had been communicated to every tourist on the vessel. We eventually found a little nook at the rear of the vessel and patiently waited to capture the extraordinary views of the illuminated buildings and boats. The enhanting light display included changing colours and images that were even synchronised to music … ASTOUNDING!
Time to hit the road!
