Monkey Mountain and the Forgotten Temple: Hua Hin
After nearly a month in Thailand, we found ourselves in the bizarre little beach town of Cha am. We learned the hard way that Cha am is definitely not a backpacking destination. The place has a very odd vibe to it and we were looking to escape almost immediately after arriving. Luckily for us, we were able to meet up with a couple of our travel buddies from the U.K. whom we met a few days prior on the night train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.
Once we figured out how to get out of Cha am (which was surprisingly complicated), we made a b-line to Hua Hin; a much more developed and interesting city along the coast about 30 minutes south. During our first full day in Hua Hin, we decided to check out the aptly named Monkey Mountain (a.k.a Hua Hin Khao Takiab temple). Along the way, we also ran into a cool fishing port, and an all but forgotten Buddhist temple on a hill overlooking the city. Sadly, our buddy Chris was absent from this expedition due to a nasty sunburn he sustained the day before.
This little adventure really captures the essence of how the reality of a travel destination can be very different than the expectation. It's also a great reminder that if you invest the time exploring the non touristic parts of a destination (except Cha am... Cha am sucks), you will almost always be rewarded with great experiences and, in this case, having a huge temple complex all to ourselves!
Enjoy and do forget to follow us!

Walking Through Wat Huay Mongkol Temple
The Wat Huay Mongkol temple complex located some 15 kilometers west of Hua Hin is famous for its enormous statue of one of Thailand’s most famous monks, named Luang Phor Thuad.
Giant Luang Phor Thuad statue
The statue, which is about 12 meters tall and 10 meters wide, is set on a large mound. The image can be seen from far away reaching higher than the trees. You can climb up the wide stairways to the giant statue; bring water and sun cream since there is no shade and it gets hot quickly.
This place is very popular with Thai people from all over the country, who come here to pay respect to Luang Phor Thuad and to ask for things as favours, good luck, health, fortune and happiness.
On each side of the giant statue, there is a huge wooden elephant. Local people walk in circles under the belly of the elephants wishing for good luck. The complex also holds a Buddhist temple, a statue of King Taksin the Great on horseback and shops where Buddhist amulets can be bought.

The statue is representative of a monk called Luang Pu Thuat
Luang Pu Thuat (Thai: หลวงปู่ทวด), also known as Luang Pu Thuad, He was born in 1582 (2125 BE) and died 1682 (2225 BE) in Ayer Kala, Lenggong, Perak, Malaysia.[1][2] He is a revered Buddhist monk who lived in Siam. He is said to have performed miracles.
He is is mentioned in the early regional histories of southern Thailand, but his life is mainly preserved in oral traditions. Stories of the famous monk were passed on by word of mouth for centuries. As a result, it is a mixture of Buddhist elements: early signs, alleged magic, travel, study, meditation and eventual “sainthood.”
His movements throughout the southern Thai peninsula constitute a path of pilgrimage for many of his followers.
He has also been said to have saved countless lives of people be it the battlefield, car accidents, armed robbery or more with his sacred amulets.

Who is Luang Phor Thuad?
Lang Phor Thuad was born in the late Ayutthaya period, in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Like the stories about the fall of Ayutthaya, Luang Phor Thuad’s story is imbued with legends and myths. The most famous story is about the miracle he performed while on a boat journey from Thailand’s south to Ayutthaya, during which he turned seawater into fresh drinking water, saving the entire crew from dehydration. Other miraculous stories recount how he helped avert fatal accidents or fire.
