City Description:
Huế is a city in central Vietnam that was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty emperors and the national capital from 1802 to 1945. A major attraction is its vast, 19th-century Đại Nội Citadel, surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. It encompasses the Imperial City, with palaces and shrines; the Forbidden Purple City (Tử cấm thành), once the emperor’s home; and a replica of the Royal Theater.Dragon boats ply the Sông Hương River, dubbed the Perfume River for the fragrant flowers that drop into it from nearby orchards each fall. To the south lie 7 imperial tombs, including the Tomb of Tu Duc, with a lotus-filled lake and pavilion. Another significant site, Thien Mu Pagoda, dates to 1601 and contains a monastic complex and 12 wooden sculptures of the temple’s fearsome guardians. Other diversions include bustling Dong Ba Market and eateries serving local dishes such as bun bo, a spicy beef noodle soup. Day trips include picturesque Thuận An Beach (Bãi tắm Thuận An) and tours to the Demilitarized Zone.
Weather and Events:
The climate is tropical, and most travelers visit during the warm, dry season (Feb–Aug). During rainy season (Sep–Jan), large storms are possible. Because of its mountain location, Hue often gets more rain then other areas of the country. Along with Tết, or Vietnamese New Year (Jan/Feb, dates vary), Hue's Hon Chen Temple Festivals, held every spring and autumn (dates vary), are widely attended. The biennial Huế Festival (April/May) is a notable event featuring music and dance performances, food stalls and film screenings.

Vietnam Hue - things to see and do
Hue is the former imperial capital situated in the central region in Vietnam. It is famous for its main landmark called: the Perfume River, with the old city and the Citadel on the north side and the newer city which includes most hotels and restaurants, on the south side. The riverside is popular thanks to the pleasant promenade and park where you can see bizarre sculptures. You can find fascinating tombs located further south in the outskirts of Hue such as Tomb of Minh Mang, Royal Tombs, Tomb of Tu Duc and others. Hue´s prime attraction and the former seat of government is a great sprawling complex of temples, moats, pavilions, museums, shops, galleries and walls. It is a rare commodity in Vietnam and thanks to its size it is delightfully peaceful. The local guide might tell you a lot about the history of Vietnam and how it was founded. It is an interesting site to visit even at the sunset. There are also many other landmarks worth visiting such as: Thien Mu Pagoda which is a historic temple. It is the tallest religious building in Vietnam and it has seven stories. It sits on the Hà Khê hill and it is around 3 km from the Citadel of Hue. It sits on the northern bank of the Perfume River. Once visiting Hue, you can take different tours to breathtaking places such as: Bach Ma National Park which is a protected area in central Vietnam. It reaches a peak of 1450m at Bach Ma Mountain, only 18 km from the coast. You can take a day trip to the park, go trekking and enjoy the great views. You can also take city tours, sightseeing tours or even private tours. There are plenty of things to do and if you find this city attractive, you can contact Lesli from Lloyds and Travel at Lesli@lloydstravel.com. She can help you make the right choice for you and your family.

About Hue
The Citadel Complex of Hue, set up by Nguyen Dynasty from 1805 to 1945, is now one amongst the relics of the Hue ancient Capital – the World Cultural Heritage, capturing much of tourists’ attention.
The poetic and beautiful Hue of Vietnam was chosen to be the capital of the Southern Kingdom under Nguyen Lords’ Dynasty, and officially became the nation's capital under Tay Son Dynasty, King Quang Trung. The citadel palace complex is located on the North bank of Huong River (Perfume River), inside Hue city. It is a huge complex covering an area of 520ha and comprising three circles of ramparts, Kinh Thanh Hue (Hue Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (Royal Citadel) and Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). It was said to be protected by the two sand dunes: The Con Hen and Con Da Vien on the Perfume River, as dragon on the left, tiger on the right. If you are in Hue, please join us in this small journey exploring the beautiful feudal palace, the inspiration for numerous artists ever stepping inside!
The very first stop-over is the exterior circle, the Kinh Thanh Hue (Hue capital citadel), which started to be constructed in 1805 under the reign of Emperor Gia Long and was completed in 1832 under the sovereignty of Emperor Ming Mang. Over the past 200 years, it has still maintained original with nearly 140 small and large constructions. With a square shape, it is almost 10km in circumference, 6m high, 21m thick, with 10 entrances. On the top of the walls, 24 bastions are established for defensive purposes. Besides, the Citadel has an ancillary gate connecting the Tran Binh Bastion called the Tran Binh Mon (Peaceful protector Gate).
Now we get further into the second circle, the Hoang Thanh (Royal citadel), also the most important part of the Citadel, which was built in 1804 but totally completed in 1833, under King Ming Mang’s reign. The Citadel, which is more than 600m long for each side, was built with bricks of 4m high, and 1m thick. Around the citadel is a protecting trench system. Tourists can get access to the Imperial Citadel through four entrance gates. In the past, Ngo Mon Gate was only reserved for the King. Royal Citadel consists of more than 100 fascinating architectural works divided into numerous sections:
Section of the Ngo Mon Gate and the Thai Hoa Palace: used for various grand ceremonies.
Section for placing shrines of the Kings under Nguyen Dynasty: Trieu Mieu, Thai Mieu, Hung Mieu, The Mieu and Phung Tien Temples.
Section of internal affairs office: Storehouse for precious objects, workshop for manufacturing various useful articles.
Section of the Kham Van Palace and Co Ha Garden: is where the princes studied or relaxed.
Passing through Hoang Thanh, we enter Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). Situated inside the Imperial Citadel complex, behind the Throne Palace, the Purple Forbidden Citadel was reserved for Emperor and his family. Built in the early 1803 under reign of Emperor Gia Long, it was initially named Cung Thanh. In 1821, it was renamed into the today’s Tu Cam Thanh.
This citadel part was built with brick walls of 3.72m high, 0.72m thick, and about 1,230m in circumference. Its front and back sides are 324m long respectively, while the left and right sides are both more than 290m long. The whole site consists of 50 architectural constructions of different sizes and 7 gates for facilitating the entrance and exit. Dai Cung Mon (the Great Palace Gate) is in the front side, only reserved for the Kings. Can Chanh Palace was the place for daily working of Emperors. Can Thanh (Emperor's Private Palace), Khon Thai Residence (Queen's Private Apartment) were reserved for the Queens. There are still many other sections, for instance, Duyet Thi Duong house (Royal Theatre), Thuong Thien (the kitchen for the Kings' food), Thai Binh Lau (King's reading room), all of which are of great architectural value, luring uncountable visitors who are interested in feudal architecture.
Should you ever come inside the citadel, taking a look into the special feudal relics of immense architectural and cultural values, you will surely more or less love the traditional and classical side of Vietnam. As time goes by, thousands of changes have occurred, the precious historical and classical beauty of the nation would never be gone!

OK travel bugs, this was INSANE. I honestly thought we were going by motorbike and was ready for the occasion. Turns out they had the jeep available that day and we drove it along the Vietnam coastline. BREATHTAKING! This was definitely one of those “wow, I can’t believe I did that” travel moments.
While you can take a shuttle bus or the train, both those options don’t allow you to see Vietnam’s amazing coastline views. Consider taking a private motorbike, jeep, or car option to get the most out of your time!
Here’s some destinations we visited during the drive from Hue to Hoi An:
-Fishing village
-Hai Van Pass is a long mountainous stretch of road in Central Vietnam that juts into the sea. An incredibly beautiful path to ride on on motorbike or…jeep!
-My Khe Beach, R & R Beach is a beach in Danang, a white sandy 20-mile stretch!
-Marble Mountain is a cluster of limestone hills, caves, tunnels, and temples. A seriously fascinating site to visit in Vietnam!
-Danang is the largest city in Vietnam in terms of population - wow!
-Hoi An Ancient City
I flew into Hue instead of Danang because it was cheaper, so I had to travel down South to get to Hoi An :) Hope that helps with navigation!
If you've made it this far...give the video a big thumbs up! You're epicly awesome.

Backpacking Vietnam Part 5: Oyster Juiced from Hue to Hoi An
Hue was a mixed bag for us, we loved our hotel and the staff there and looked forward to an amazing (free!) breakfast each morning for renting a huge $9 a night room. Vietnam has got the hotel and hospitality game on lock. Great service and value but in Hue, this is where it stopped. The night before our bus trip we went out to eat and since it was pissing rain we decided to stay close and went to a little restaurant in our alley that was packed with Vietnamese. That is our rule number 1, if it's packed with locals, that's our spot too! So we sit down and can tell that no one wants to be the one to talk to us since they don't speak english. This is totally fine as it's equally as awkward for us as our Vietnamese is shitty but together we can work it out. You have food and I want to eat, everyone wins and in that context there can really be no misunderstandings. We finally get menus, point to other tables' dishes since we can't read the menu, ask how much it is in Vietnamese (our price, since there are never any prices on the menus so they can charge whatever) we agree to it and have a great meal! Then we pay with a large bill (all we had) and wait for our change. We were waiting for a long time and then asked where our change was. The owner grabs his daughter from the back who speaks english to talk to us and we explain what we want and why we're still sitting there. She tells us that the 100,000 dong we gave her is exactly the price of the bill! I said no it's not and point to the piece of paper the guy who took our order wrote down BEFORE we ordered and she said that the rice we had (which we didn't order but ASSumed came with the meat dish) was exactly the remaining balance of the dong we gave them. Dammit Vietnam. This was a turning point as everything we did from here on out in Vietnam was to be spelled out perfectly before we handed over our money. Some would get pissed and initially I was, but I took it as a challenge and reveled in thinking 3 steps ahead of everyone trying to sell something. Vietnam was teaching us a lot and you know how I love a good brain teaser!
