Dutch Expert Meeting on Financing for Development at Humanity House, The Hague
On the 28th of May 2015, Kaleidos Research, The European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) and Partos jointly organized an expert meeting on financing for development (FfD). The aim of the meeting was to stimulate and nurture the political and professional debate on the future of development financing. Read more:
During this meeting James Mackie (ECDPM) launched the ‘European Report on Development 2015’ and Ries Kamphof (Kaleidos Research) presented its report ‘Financing Development now and in the future – implications for the Netherlands and beyond.’ A lively discussion took place with the audience and the panellists (Hans Opschoor (AIV), Jeroen Kwakkenbos (Eurodad) and Koos de Bruijn (Partos)) that shared their views on the role of ODA amidst the other increasingly important financial flows and on leadership role that the Netherlands can play in the FfD process. Koen Davidse (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) reflected on the discussion, in particular on the role that ODA can play in stimulating private sector development and on the importance of the FfD debate in general.
The Hague - Humanity House
At the Humanity House in The Hague you can see, hear and experience what it is like to have to survive a conflict or disaster. Alternatively, imagine trying to find your family and friends without the help of a mobile phone or address.

#MJAZZ 2018 Promo
MJAZZ Mondriaan Jazz Festival is a new and small, top-notch international jazz festival in The Hague, The Netherlands.
The festival links progressive- “jazz”-loving spirit Mondrian reflects through his contemporary art and paintings, into music. The festival focusses on jazz embedded in progressive and contemporary subcultures and movements therein: “If Mondrian would be alive today, how would his vinyl suitcase look like?”
MJAZZ18 (second edition!) will take place on Saturday October 13, 2018 (with a special opening concert on Friday October 12, 2018) in three venues in The Hague. The festival aims at the theme of interconnectivity between different progressive music cultures and in that conveying a message of what society is and reflects through the music of today. Music can be the incentive behind change and progression. MJAZZ will surprise, curate and be somewhat unexpected. You will hear music with no label, music of now, blended, mixed and more.
The program will entail supergroups, putting together the great jazz 'minds of today', taking them out of their comfort zone, presenting groups that will enjoy their first international debut, the current stars, upcoming stars, ... all progressively moving forward in a realm that does not have to be labeled as yet.

Parade in The Hague, Netherlands, Prinsjesdag, Prince's Day
One of the most colorful and exciting days of the year in the Netherlands is Prince’s Day (Prinsjesdag) which happens in the Hague when the king rides in his golden coach in a major parade through town with lots of marching bands and soldiers on horseback, with traditional colorful outfits and thousands of people cheering as the parade goes by.
It's a big outdoor party for people of all ages and kids are especially happy because they get the day off from school.
You might be surprised to think that a political speech that's all about the budget for the year would turn out such an enthusiastic crowd, but it's really all about the king and the people's long-standing love and appreciation for the monarchy and they like the razzle-dazzle of the fancy parade.
This special day happens just once a year on the third Tuesday in September and begins at the stroke of one when the king, accompanied by other members of the royal household, leaves the palace in his golden carriage, which is only seen publicly on this one day of the year. Heading to parliament to give a speech, accompanied by court dignitaries and a military escort of honor, along with various marching bands and many soldiers marching by in colorful outfits.
We’re going to show you a lot of the exciting visual highlights and explain to you what's going on during this special day when the government is coming back into session after their summer vacation.
What To Do In The Hague
WHAT TO DO IN THE HAGUE - Visiting The Hague was full of surprises. I only knew it as the location of the International Criminal Court but there is so much more to see! It was a day of discovering all that The Hague has to offer.
We took the train from Rotterdam for a day trip to The Hague. We started our visit at Mauritshuis, a museum with a collection bursting with paintings by Dutch masters. We saw Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson, which is much larger than I thought it’d be. I had no idea he was only twenty-five when he painted this world-famous masterpiece in 1632. I can remember learning about it as a kid in school. The most famous painting in the museum, however, is Vermeer’s The Girl With A Pearl Earring. Before arriving in The Hague I didn’t know it was here! Arguably one of the most recognizable paintings in the entire world, it’s even more incredible in real life. Vermeer has been called the master of light and, when you see this painting, you immediately understand why. The girl has an inscrutable expression on her face, which reminds me of the Mona Lisa. Her eyes follow you as you walk back and forth across the room. To me it feels very contemporary even though it was painted in 1665. Seeing this was not only a highlight of The Hague but The Netherlands overall.
After Mauritshuis we headed to a gallery with a totally different artwork: Escher in Het Palais. It’s a gallery entirely devoted to the work of artists and graphic designer M.C. Escher. The building itself is part of the attraction because it’s the former winter palace of Queen Mother Emma of The Netherlands. Escher is well-known for his drawings that require a second look. He really plays with reality and it was interesting to see the progression of his art.
After seeing such different types of art we headed to the International Criminal Court. I couldn’t have visited The Hague without making a visit here because, to me, they’re inseparable. It’s a place where individuals who have been charged with genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity - the gravest of charges - come to be tried by the international community. There are public galleries where you can go and listen to open sessions to see what’s going on. There’s also an exhibition about the history of the ICC: why it exists, what it does, when it was formed, who it’s funded by, and who it serves. We learned a lot and I’m glad I got to see it.
Next we arrived at the pier - just in time for magic hour as the sun was going down. Everyone in The Netherlands told us that the beach and pier in The Hague is fabulous and a really popular spot, especially in the warmer months. There’s a large Ferris wheel, hotels, restaurants, shops, and lots of activities for children and families. It was lovely to see this other side of the city and enjoy the fresh sea breeze.
We were hungry and looking forward to a cozy dinner and a chance to warm up after spending the day looking around. We found exactly what we were looking for at Jamey Bennet, back in the city centre. The idea is that you order a bunch of plates and share them. Everything was delicious but our favourites were the ceviche, salmon sashimi and dessert. There was a fire and having a long leisurely dinner was the perfect way to top off the day.
I had such a great time visiting The Hague and loved discovering all the wonderful things you find there. So happy we got to see it all! Did anything take you by surprise? Leave a comment below and tell me!

10 CRAZIEST Laws You Can Only Find In The Netherlands
10 Unbelievable Dutch laws that exist today.
10 Strangest laws that exist only in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands, also known as Holland, is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world. It is home to some of the world’s most picturesque spots and was one of the first countries in the world to legalize same marriage. The Netherlands has also made a ton of progress with finding solutions for the ever prominent issue of pollution and is a country that actively contributes to the conservation of the environment. It wouldn’t be wrong to state that the Netherlands really has its bearings together as a country - however there are laws and regulations in the Netherlands that may be less than conventional to visitors from other countries. The following video delves into some of the Netherlands’ strangest laws. From oddly specific laws for bicycle related incidents to justifiably weird rules about canals - this list covers most, if not, some of the strangest laws in the Netherlands.
Migrants in the Netherlands (The Hague) complain about shelter
Migrants just arrived in The Hague but refuse to stay in the shelter. They want their own room with tv and refrigerator. And the food is no good either. Many 'refugees' believe the stories about a 'better and free life' human smugglers tell them and they expect European countries to live up to these promises made by smugglers. All the people in this video have a residence permit. Aren't we lucky with these new inhabitants.
Heshika Deegahawathura Understanding People–Centric Realities | Hague Talks
HOW CAN WE INVEST IN SUSTAINABLE PEACE?
It’s a key issue for all of us – especially if you work or study in The Hague, where the key concepts of justice, peace and security are being debated daily.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Heshika Deegahawathura argues for solutions that meet the basic needs of the people post-conflict. He’s a social entrepreneur innovating for policy impact and economic development. He’s led strategic and cross-sectoral projects and assisted the rehabilitation and reintegration process of former rebels for the Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation in Sri Lanka.
Are key stakeholders and policy makers in a conflict, or post-conflict scenario, sufficiently empathetic to the wants and needs of the people? Hence, the solutions to achieving a sustainable peace, in each situation, shouldn’t be prescriptive. Instead, the solutions should be formulated with the respective people-centric realities in mind. The core objective of such solutions should be to meet the basic needs of the people and lead them towards a happy and fulfilling life.
We’re very proud that this Hague Talks event, organised by the Hague Project Peace and Justice, is in cooperation with a numbers of partners, including Just Peace Festival, One Young World, Universiteit Leiden, Humanity House, Justice Hub and the Paard.
HAGUE TALKS is a meeting place for creative minds, peace inventors and game changers in the field of peace and justice.
