Hoi An Travel Guide - Vietnam Pleasant Atmosphere
Hoi An Travel Guide - Vietnam Pleasant Atmosphere
Hoi An is a beautiful city in Vietnam, just south of Da Nang. The Old Town of Hoi An is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hoi An, once known as Faifo, with more than 2,000 years history, was the principal port of the Cham Kingdom, which controlled the strategic spice trade with Indonesia from the 7th to the 10th century and was a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries - and the foreign influences are discernible to this day.
The culture & heritage is mostly from the Cham people whose kingdom originally stretched from Hue South to Phan Thiet (South of Nha Trang) - the Champa's most likely originally from Java. The original Cham political capital was Tra Kieu, the commercial capital was Hoi An and the spiritual capital was My Son (Hindu). The Cham people were Hindu, and by the 10th century the influence of Arab traders to Hoi An resulted in some converting to become Muslims.
The culture & heritage that UNESCO World Heritage Site status for Hoi An Ancient Town was trying to preserve has long since gone. Since 1999, when UNESCO WHS status was awarded, there has been a massive increase in tourism - with the result that most houses have been sold by the community to speculators and shop owners to be used for commercial purposes. The former community, and with it their culture and heritage, has gone and in their place are endless indistinguishable shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. There are literally hundreds of tailor shops in Hoi An.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status also applies for Hoi An Ancient Town, but in reality this status, like many other UNESCO statuses, is not being cherished by site management. The main thoroughfare in the Old Town is Tran Phu. Just south of the Old Town, across the Thu Bon River, are the islands of An Hoi to the west, reachable via Hai Ba Trung, and Cam Nam to the east, reachable via Hoang Dieu. Hoi An is known for clothing and shoes, with more than 600 shops catering to a very limited pool of tourists. Walk some of the streets outside the old town and you will see open-fronted workshops operating all hours where the clothes are made.
The centre of Hoi An is very small and pedestrianised, so you will be walking around most of the time. Motorbikes are only banned from the centre of town during certain times of day, so keep an eye out for them; even in the most narrow alleys. Evenings are especially busy with motorbikes two, or even three abreast competing with pedestrians for even the smallest space on the street.
To enter most of the main attractions in the Old Town (i.e. the handful of buildings that aren't shops) you require a ticket (120,000 dong), which is sold at various kiosks. You certainly do not (usually) require a ticket just to walk the streets. But it can seem that way since the main entrance to the Old Town is the Japanese covered bridge, which being one of the attractions /does/ require the ticket. But there's nothing to stop you using the nearby footway on the waterfront instead.
Hotels in Hoi An are fiercely competitive, which means plenty of choice and generally high standards. Budget options are slightly pricier than many other parts of Vietnam, with $6 being about the cheapest. Around the centre, 300,000 VND is usually the lowest asking price (March 2013). Heading further out of town, more typical prices can be found. Many hotels are clustered around Hai Ba Trung St and Ba Trieu St, just north of the Old Town and within easy walking distance, and also along Cua Dai Street, off to the east and a bit of a hike away.
Most of Hoi An's high-end hotels are located along the unbroken beach stretching from Danang to Hoi An. Closest is Cua Dai Beach 5 km away. It is more likely to find a good bargain in the evening, when budget hotels try to fill their rooms for the night.

23 Things To Do In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam

►FREE eBook:
When I was in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), along with eating as much Vietnamese food as I could, one of my goals was to film a travel video about some of the best things to do in Saigon. After putting together a complete list, it turned out to be 23, and I hope this list of attractions will help and inspire you to visit Vietnam’s largest and most exciting city.
1. Binh Tay Market - Binh Tay Market is one of the largest wholesale distribution markets, and a perfect place to go if you’re looking to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Thien Hau Temple (Pagoda) - Located in Chinatown, in District 5, the temple is dedicated to Thien Hau and I really loved the sculptures and the elaborate design of the temple.
3. Museum of Ho Chi Minh City - This museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the city and Vietnam.
4. Bitexco Financial Tower - This is the tallest building in Saigon, and you can either go to the Skydeck or a cafe at the top for a view of the city.
5. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) - Probably one of the most well known tourism things to do in Saigon is to visit the Independence Palace, the the former home of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.
Thank you for watching this video about the top 23 things to do in Saigon, Vietnam. I hope it has given you some great ideas to help you plan your visit.

The unseen face of meth use
What does a meth user look like? You’re probably not picturing Courtney – and that’s one reason why it’s so important to hear his story.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, meth became the most widely used illicit drug among urban gay men. Early characterizations of the meth problem in the gay community depicted the party boy or the middle-class white man as the prototype of the meth user, says Dr. Perry Halkitis, professor of applied psychology, global public health, and medicine at New York University.
Public health campaigns in the early 2000s targeted white gay meth users as a way of combating the AIDS epidemic. This, Halkitis believes, created a stigma among middle- and upper-class white gay men and pushed the drug underground in the gay community. And while Halkitis says meth use is still common among all subsets of the gay population, a recent study of his found meth now disproportionately affects HIV-positive and African-American gay men.
To make this short, filmmaker Spencer Macnaughton spent weeks of chatting online with many men and attending a Crystal Meth Anonymous meeting at New York's LGBT Community Center, where 38 gay male ex-meth users shared their recovery stories. For more on how this was made, see the article on Vox.com:

Vietnam '16
For five weeks, I traveled all throughout Vietnam; four of those weeks mostly with my mom. I wanted to go to Vietnam because I thought it would be a good place to travel with my mom since it is where she was raised and so that I can better understand my roots. Also, I wanted to see how Vietnam celebrated Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), which all of the Vietnamese cities were getting ready for while we were there.
Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City): Saigon has changed a lot from the last ten years since I have been there, but I think it has changed for the better. Although it has become more westernized, there’s less poverty, and businesses seem to booming. Nightlife is also abundant with some bars and clubs lasting until the morning. Highlights: Flower Tet Festival, Ben Thanh Market, Bui Vien Street, all the bars (Fox Beer Garden, Brohma Rooftop Bar, Carmen, Chill Sky Bar, KOTO rooftop bar), 3D Art Gallery
Ha Long Bay: I went on a three day, two night luxury cruise through Ha Long Bay with my mom. The first night was spent on the boat, while the second night was spent on a bungalow in front of a beach on one of the secluded islands of Cat Ba. Other Highlights: kayaking through Ha Long Bay caves, swmming in Ha Long waters, oyster farm, ocean view cabin
Hanoi: Hanoi is a quieter and more cultural town compared to Saigon. It was nice to see some of the old Vietnamese architecture in the Old Town District, which is also where I stayed. Bars are supposed to close at 12AM, but some secretly stay open after midnight until cops come and bust them (fun to witness). Other Highlights: Wave Music Festival (for $4), water puppet show, Hoa Prison Museum
Sapa: Sapa was probably my most unique and favorite experience in Vietnam. From Hanoi, I took an overnight train to Sapa and spent two days trekking the mountains and rice terraces of Sapa. It was through a tour where the group was led by local Hmong local villager. We were also followed by other local mountain villagers that helped us from slipping down the mountains. The scenery throughout the trek was breathtaking – felt like I was in a Vietnamese style Lord of the Rings. Our group spent a night at a homestay in one of the villages.
Nha Trang: When my mom was younger, she used to live in Nha Trang for a while, so we stayed at this beach town for a few days and hung out with her childhood friends. The town has definitely gotten more touristy since I last been and seems to be overtaken by a lot of Russians. Still a nice, relaxing town though. I stayed a luxury condo (Muong Thanh Luxury Hotel) with my mom on the 43rd floor for $44/night. Other Highlights: Champa ruins, Vinpearl Park
South of Saigon Tour: My mom has never explored south of Saigon, so we booked a three day tour through the south of Saigon all of the way down to Camau – the lowest point in Vietnam. Throughout the tour, we dropped by Can Tho, Bac Lieu, and went through the Mekong River. Other Highlights: Floating Market in Mekong River, Tiger Music Festival (free)
Central Vietnam Tour: Another three day tour that my mom wanted to book was to check out some of the cities around central Vietnam including Da Nang, Hue, Quang Binh, Phong Nha caves, and Hoi An. We also celebrated the eve of Tet (Vietnamese New Years Eve) in Da Nang, where we watched fireworks over the dragon bridge from our hotel rooftop. Other Highlights: Champa temples in the caves, eating Bun Bo Hue in Hue, Royal Palace
Hoi An: One of the most scenic town in Vietnam. A town filled with lanterns and known to be the Venice of Vietnam. I decided to go back to Hoi An because I heard this city was the best place to be during Tet because most other cities are empty during the holiday. It was definitely crowded with tourists, loaded with lanterns, carnival games and nightly concerts. Other Highlights: Champa My Son ruins, 25 cent beer, bikng around the town
Phu Quoc: A relatively unknown Vietnamese island that will soon be booming with tourists within the next five years. Some of the beaches here are really nice and probably the best in Vietnam. You can definitely tell that this island will become very touristy soon because there was a lot of ongoing construction. I had a lot of fun on this island and beach hopped almost everyday, especially with the groups of backpackers that I met through my hostel. Other Highlights: Langchia Hostel, beach hopping by motorbike, Bai Sao Beach, hotel pool hopping at night, bioluminescent plankton at the beach, getting our own personal boat ride around the islands
