Hunter Mountain: Kaatskill Flyer, 10/6/18

The Kaatskill Flyer is Hunter Mountain's main base to summit lift. It serves all trails on the main mountain and provides access to the Hunter West and Hunter North areas. Being the signature lift at the most visited resort in New York and running year round, it is one of the most ridden lifts anywhere in the northeast.

It was installed in 2010 by Leitner-Poma and is 5400 feet long by 1477 vertical with a capacity of 2600/hr. The design speed is 1000 feet per minute which it operates at in the winter. It is run much slower in the summer/fall like all lifts that have off-season operations. It's one of 3 Poma Omega systems in New York State, the other two of which are at Gore Mountain.

When installed, the lift was the first and only high speed 6 passenger chairlift in New York State, a title it still holds today. However, soon after it opens for winter, it will lose the only distinction. The new Hunter North expansion will include another Leitner-Poma 6 called Northern Express, and across the valley, Windham Mountain will debut their Westside Six, a Doppelmayr that will serve as the main base to summit lift.

This is the only lift at Hunter that runs a regular schedule in the summer/fall. Unlike many summer lifts, it does not serve a bike park, but the lift provides scenic rides, and access to the zipline tour and summit wedding venue. This recording was taken during Oktoberfest, so lift was far busier than it normally is during off-season operations. There was a significant wait at the bottom, and slow downs and stops were more frequent.

Award winning storyteller Megan Hicks performed at the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center on Sunday August 17th as part of the 22nd Annual - Not Just For Kids Storytelling Series.
She was featured as a New Voice at the National Storytelling Festival in 2011, and her credits range from small venues in rural America to regional stages throughout the United States and international programs on three continents.
Her awards include a Parents’ Choice Silver for the CD, “What Was Civil About That War” which was also a 2005 finalist for an Audies Award in the category of Best Original Work. She received a Storytelling World Honor Award and was named National Storyteller of the Year.
Megan Hicks also had been involved in making origami jewelry since 1986. She has created workshops and performances around the art of origami.
The Not Just For Kids Storytelling Series is an annual favorite for patrons of Schoharie Crossing. All performances are held rain or shine at the Visitor Center at 6:00 pm with refreshments following the performance.
This year the program has been sponsored by The Friends of Schoharie Crossing, Stewart’s Shops, L’Ultimo, Southside Food Company, the Garden Bug, Karen’s Produce and Dolci Bakery. The program also received support from Saratoga Arts through its Fulton Montgomery Arts Grant Program, which is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Cuomo and the New York Legislature.

That's what Andrew Renner and his son, Owen Renner, thought when they skied to a remote den on Esther Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska and illegally slaughtered a family of hibernating black bears.

Their despicable actions were captured on a wildlife camera, set up by the US Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, to study the bears. The haunting video footage shows the men creeping up to the bears’ winter den and shooting the mother as her two babies shriek in fear, until more shots pierce the air.

The hunting of cubs, or a mother bear with cubs, is illegal in this part of Alaska. But that didn’t stop the Renners from murdering innocent animals, posing for a picture with the dead mother on the bloodstained snow and smugly stating, “We go where we want to kill.”

Andrew and Owen Renner were not found innocent, after destroying evidence at the scene and presenting the adult carcass as a legal kill to the state’s wildlife agency, lying about killing the cubs and submitting falsified information. They later plead guilty; each received jail time and had their hunting licenses suspended. Andrew was fined $9,000 and forfeited personal property including a 22-foot boat, his vehicle and various weapons.

Justice was served—but these animals deserve more respect and compassion. Federal law currently forbids this practice on national preserves in Alaska, but the current administration is looking to remove such prohibitions. If this heinous cruelty occurs while protections are already in place, overturning them would all but encourage these massacres to continue.

We need more federal protections, not less, to ensure that these types of cruel and horrific activities are banned for good.
