Welcome to day 8 of our Iceland trip!
Day 8:
- It was an hour and a half drive from the campground to our first stop at Hvitserkur Rock, and amazing rock feature on the beach that looks like an enormous animal drinking.
- From there, we walked along the beach to Osar, where there is a seal colony, it is about a 15 min walk south of Hvitserkur Rock.
- Then we drove around the Vatsnes Peninsula stopping at various points ( Illugastadir, Svalbard) to see more seals as well as having lunch.
- After that we took the long drive into West Iceland to the beautiful town of Drangsnes where we ended the day bathing in the free hot tubs right next to the sea, fantastic!

Согласно исландскому фольклору, скала Hvitserkur - не что иное, как окаменевший на солнце тролль, который слишком увлёкся набегом на местную церквушку.
Своим названием, которое переводится как Белый кафтан, скала обязана отходам жизнедеятельности сотен птиц, хотя в просторечье она более известна как Скала-носорог или Скала-слон.
С геологической точки зрения это базальтовый утёс, находившийся когда-то в жерловине вулкана. Кратер пал под натиском стихий, та же неминуемая участь ждала и Hvitserkur, не подоспей на помощь люди, наверняка уверенные в том, что злой тролль вновь обретёт свободу, случись скале упасть. Основание забетонировали, не оставив несчастному троллю ни единого шанса на спасение :(

Hvitserkur sea stack - North Iceland
On the shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula in Northern Iceland stands a prominent sea stack, which (depending on who you ask) looks like a drinking dragon, a Scottish terrier with a turtle on top, a dinosaur (potentially a Parasaurolophus or Triceratops?), a rhinoceros or a hippopotamus. It is home to a vast number of fulmar, whose excrement has coloured the cliff white - giving the monolith its name, which means White Shirt - also the name of the legendary Viking, Hvítserkur Ragnarsson, one of the sons of the ancient king Ragnar Loðbrók.
The legend goes that Hvítserkur is a petrified troll who once upon a time lived in Strandir in the West Fjords and for personal reasons wanted to tear down the bells of Þingeyrarklaustur convent. The Icelandic trolls are heathen monsters and obviously don't like the sound or sight of churches or church-bells. The troll never made it farther than this beach, where the first rays of the rising sun turned the poor thing to stone - which as Icelanders all know is the fate of trolls in sunshine.

The rock has two holes at the base, which give it the appearance of a dragon who is drinking. The base of the stack has been reinforced with concrete to protect its foundations from the sea. Several species of birds, such as gulls and fulmars, live on at Hvítserkur and its name (white shirt in Icelandic) comes from the color of the guano deposited on its rocks.

We passed through Tjörn were we saw signs stating that the beach was closed due to too many tourists disturbing the seals. The area by Hvítserkur did provide us with a close up of a (dead) seal and seals sunning on the other side of the bay. No bathroom was found though. And the arctic terns were dive-bombing us because we were too close to their nests.
