Day of the Dead Festival at Manassas, VA
Saturday, October 30th, 2010 was a fine autumn afternoon to celebrate this joyous artistic expression of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. This festival could not have been in a better place, the Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Manassas campus of George Mason University. It was the first time that an event like this took place at this center. Community, schools, dance companies and artists worked together to build this charming event. Tom Evert, artistic director, and Sue Skaddan, executive director, were the leaders who brought all this effort together. The event was presented by Dance Evert. Visit: DancEvert.org for this and future events.
This program was funded in part by the Arts Council of Fairfax County.

The Buzz: Hylton Peforming Arts Center 2015/2016 Season
Rick Davis, the executive director of the Hylton Performing Arts Center, said the 2015-2016 season will be the “biggest and best yet.”
“I know I say that every year, but it’s true every year,” Davis said.
Acts in this year’s sixth season include everything from ballet to Bollywood dancers. Country crooners will visit the performing arts center at George Mason University’s Prince William campus, as will pop orchestras and rock groups.
Davis said the Bollywood Masala Orchestra and Dancers of India, who will be at the performing arts center this fall, will be “over-the-top” with color and energy.
Davis also touted the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra’s “To Swing Through the Sky,” a multi-media show that commemorates the coinciding paths of jazz and aviation in the United States. “The great American inventions of jazz and aviation actually had a parallel track throughout history of innovation and discovery, and we’ve created a show with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra that explores those interactions with beautiful footage, beautiful dancing. Folks who are interested in jazz, folks who are interested in aviation, folks who are interested in American history and celebrating innovation can come on Oct. 3rd and see this incredibly great world premiere performance.”
Also on the schedule is “An Evening with Groucho” by Frank Ferrante. The Midtown Men, which includes cast members from the hit Broadway musical “Jersey Boys,” will sing Motown songs and pop tunes made famous by The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Four Seasons.
Country star Lee Greenwood will give a Christmas concert. The a cappella group Chanticleer will be at the performing center in return engagements to give Christmas and Valentine’s Day concerts. “That show has built a following every Christmas time,” Davis said of Chanticleer.
Other highlights of the season will be the Moscow Festival Ballet performing “Sleeping Beauty.”
Performances by Resident Arts Partners will include The Manassas Ballet Theatre’s “Nutcracker,” “Dances Divertissements: A Spring Sampler” and “Cinderella.” The Manassas Chorale will present “Princesses and Pirates,” “The Spirit of Christmas,” “Voices United – With Hearts and Hands and Voices,” and “Postcards from America.” The Manassas Symphony Orchestra will present “The Americans,” “Child’s Play,” “From the British Isles,” and “Musical Titans.” The Prince William Little Theatre will present the Who’s “Tommy” Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” and “Sherlock Holmes and the West End Horror.”
The Hylton Family Series will include ventriloquist Kevin Johnson and his puppets, Clyde, Matilda and Harley. The Enchantment Theatre Company will bring “Peter Rabbit Tales” to the Center and “Clifford the Big Red Dog – Live!” will show this season. “The Hylton Family Series is one of our favorite events we do every year. This year there are three Sunday matinee performances specifically for young folks,” Davis said.
For more information and a complete listing of performances for the 2015 – 2016 season, visit the Hylton Center’s website or call 703-993-7550.
