Oriental White Stork - Toyooka, Japan
The Oriental White Stork was extinct in Japan in 1971. Toyooka City reintroduced the species after banning pesticides in the ricefileds that it fed in and instead, started producing stork friendly rice. Going organic helped the birds and biodiversity plus the city is now prospering.
Banning pesticides and relying on natural pest control benefits all life - including our own.

Rice full of vitality - The white stork-friendly farming method
The oriental white stork disappeared from Japan's skies in 1971. The main cause of their extinction was environmental pollution by pesticides and chemical fertilizers used in rice fields. Toyooka, along with Hyogo Prefecture, continued its steady efforts to revive the stork, and succeeded reintroducing them into nature in 2005. Since then, the number has gradually increased, and now there are over 100 storks in various parts of Japan. In order for storks to live in a human habitat as they once did, it was necessary to increase the living creatures on which they feed and improve the deteriorated environment. Therefore, people of Toyooka worked on the ‘white stork-friendly farming method’ that does not rely on pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Through their efforts, the environment gradually improved, and the production of safe and delicious ‘Stork Natural Rice’ is increasing. This video is a 22-minute summary of how the ‘white stork-friendly farming method’ achieves this. People in Toyooka felt remorse over the extinction of the storks and decided to change their environment to one where storks and people live in harmony. I sympathized with their thoughts and produced this video.

The Oriental Stork, or konotori in Japanese, went extinct in Japan as a result of modern farming practices killing off its food supply including frogs, fish and other wetland animals. The last bird died near Kinosaki in 1971.
Konotori no Sato Park was designed to reintroduce the storks to Japan using birds provided by Russia. The storks themselves are now designated a special protected animal by the government, and have become a symbol of the Tajima region around Kinosaki, where even the local airport is called Konotori Tajima Airport after them.

5 a.m. furo at the hotel. Then a Family Mart breakfast of NATTO roll (I couldn’t resist getting a picture to youse all!) and a cabbage tossed green salad. I caught the local train and in about 10 minutes arrived in Toyooka, another city in Hyogo prefecture. Caught the bus to Kounotori Park, about a 15-minute ride, 250-yen. This park is by the mountain side among rice fields. It is free to visit, they have a museum, café and souvenir shop. Some birds are right by the museum and you can see free flying birds around the area. Wish I had a good telescopic lens camera.
Went back to Toyooka city and went BURA-BURA. Funny, but most of the stores were still shuttered at around 11:30 so I just went into a restaurant and ordered me a mini bowl of unagi – UNAGI-don. ONO! Then I caught the next train back to Kinosaki Onsen. Tried to go to Mandara-yu but oooooops, they closed today. So I went try out Kouno-yu which was closed the other day. I took a quick dip and rubber stamped my brochure. Then I headed back toward my hotel and stopped in at the Café Koyama for a refreshment. But then I felt a little hungry so I ordered a spaghetti dish. ONO! The owner figured I was a foreigner and asked where I was from. So I said “HAWAII!”. She then showed me a picture of her family’s visit to the Legend’s of Hawaii show. Nice. Started back to my hotel again and noticed more people coming out with their yukatas. Nice. Called it a day!

Maruyama River Ramsar Site_Japan.mp4
Lower Maruyama River and the surrounding rice paddies has been recently designated as a Ramsar Site. The site comprises the Maruyama River within Toyooka City, adjacent rice fields and the coastal area facing the Sea of Japan. It is famous for a successful reintroduction programme for the endangered Oriental White Stork Ciconia boyciana that began in 1955 after the species had become extinct in the biogeographic region. The rice paddies are water-logged in the winter in order, as surveys indicate that they provide habitat for 5,668 species in total. The people in Toyooka City rely on the lower Maruyama River as it provides a supply of water for domestic, industrial and agricultural use and is a source of food through its fisheries.
