U.S. Route 23 is a part of the U.S. Highway System that travels from Jacksonville, Florida to Mackinaw City, Michigan. In the U.S. state of Tennessee, the U.S. Highway travels 57.5 miles from the North Carolina state line, at Sam's Gap, north to the Virginia state line, in Kingsport. With a predominant concurrency with Interstate 26 , US 23 is a divided four-lane freeway that follows Corridor B of the Appalachian Development Highway System and serves as a major thoroughfare in the Tri-Cities. The entire route of US 23 in Tennessee is an interstate-grade freeway.

Descending Roan Mountain- Bill Birchfield & Tim Pharis Jam at Laurel Bloomery

Fans of old time fiddling lost a wonderful artist on 5 May 2015 when Bill Birchfield of the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers passed. I always found the name Hilltoppers a bit curious since Roan Mountain at 6,200 ft+ is more than just a hill just as Bill Birchfield was more than just a fiddler. But, the name Roan Mountain Hilltoppers just sounds great like their old time string band sound. Start at the top of Roan at the site of the 1884 200-room Cloudland Hotel and travel to the lower reaches at the Roan Mountain State Park Visitors Center. Laurel Bloomery Fiddler Convention campground fiddle jamming music of Bill Birchfield with Tim Pharis on guitar (and banjo) accompanies the trip down the mountain.

Tim Pharis is one of the two organizers of the 1st Upper East Tennessee Fiddlers Convention (old time only, I think) to be held 29 April 2017 at the old Flag Pond Elementary School community center south of Erwin, Tennessee in Unicoi County. This is near the newly created Rocky Fork State Park where Tim Pharis is the resident ranger. Tim Pharis graduated from nearby ETSU and was probably much influenced by the ETSU Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Studies Program in the Department of Appalachian Studies at ETSU.

This video takes 9 minute start to finish. However the uncut raw video took 17min-35sec from the Cloudland Hotel site to Carvers Gap and then took another 21min-39sec to descend from Carvers Gap to the Roan Mountain State Park visitors center. When the Cloudland Hotel was opened in 1884, the vacationers would arrive in village of Roan Mountain on the ETWNC railroad and normally lodge in the village overnight. They would begin an all-day wagon trip to the mountaintop hotel in the morning. If all went well the trip down took the same amount of time (if not, maybe less).

Rocky Fork is 10,000 acres in Unicoi and Greene counties, and just a few years ago it became a part of the Cherokee National Forest and a Tennessee state park, and the future of this beautiful and wild tract of land is now secure. Author and photographer David Ramsey, and photographer Jerry Greer have captured the scenic wonder of rocky fork in this new book. David joins us on Daytime with a peek.

Leaving Here A Better Man- ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, 23rd Leon Kiser Memorial Tribute Show

Adam Miller from Erwin, Tennessee has lead vocal with East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Pride Band singing Leaving Here A Better Man (longer title). Adam Miller is a veteran of the well respected Unicoi County High School Bluegrass Band graduating in 2017. Adam Miller earned the prestigious and very selectively given Performing Arts Scholarship in association with his entering the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass, Old-Time, Celtic, and County Music Studies Program in the Department of Appalachian Studies.

Held on 23 February 2019 the 23rd Leon Kiser Memorial Tribute Show was sponsored by the ACMA to fund the Leon Kiser Scholarship at ETSU. ACMA also partially funds the Benny Sims Scholarship in the bluegrass program at ETSU.
