Iceland Travel: The Best Of Reykjavík
First, let's get a few things out on the table. Yes, Reykjavik is in Iceland, which is, in fact, an icy island about half the year. And, yes, Iceland was the culprit in 2010's volcanic eruption fiasco. But, what you might not know is that in the cold, long winter, Icelanders warm up in this capital's geothermal spas; and away from the city lights, they can drink in the beauty of the aurora borealis. In the summer, the weather is divine and the days are long – some days see 20 hours of sunlight. And volcanoes, like the notorious Eyjafjallajökull, are just one part of Iceland's dramatic and ethereal landscape. There are also gushing waterfalls, awe-inspiring geysers, expansive glaciers and wide-open spaces filled with Icelandic horses and sheep. Plus, Reykjavik boasts a raging nightlife scene and a surprisingly good handful of museums and local shops.
The best time to visit Reykjavik is from June to August. Not only can you enjoy the balmy temps (for Iceland, at least), but you'll also experience long days (think: up to 21 hours of sunlight ... a phenomenon dubbed midnight sun). If you're looking to save some Icelandic króna, you'll be able to do so in the winter; but those who wrestle with seasonal affective disorder might reconsider: the sun only peeks out for four or five hours between December and February.
Avoid eating at restaurants for every meal Sitting down for multiple meals daily can quickly add up. To keep your food costs low, grab a pylsur (or hot dog) from one of downtown's carts or buy grab-and-go pastries, sandwiches and snacks from a local grocery store.
Choose your spa experience wisely Blue Lagoon offers an amazing experience, but a much more cost-effective alternative is to soak in one of Reykjavik's local geothermal pools or hot pots.
Purchase a Reykjavík City Card Each Reykjavík City Card costs 1,500 to 3,300 Icelandic króna (or $14.50 to $32) and includes 24, 48 or 72 hours of complimentary access to the National Museum of Iceland and city museums like The Settlement Exhibition and the Árbaer Open Air Museum, plus unlimited rides on the city's Straetó buses.
The best ways to get around Reykjavik are by foot, car and tour bus. Although rates are often higher for organized tours, traveling by tour bus comes without the headaches of driving on unfamiliar and sometimes icy roads. If you'd rather keep your travel expenses low and roam freely without sticking to a set schedule, car hires are likely your best option. Neither, however, is suggested for exploring central Reykjavik, which is small and walkable. Taxis and public transportation are available as well but are generally more expensive. To travel between the city center and Keflavik International Airport (KEF), consider using a local tour bus operator like Gray Line Iceland and Reykjavik Excursions.

Arrived at Keflavik international airport, went straight to pick up our Camper Van from CampEasy using the bus/taxi provided by them with the van booking, and then into Reykjavík just long enough to grab groceries from Costco & Bonus before heading out on the Ring road and venturing into the Snæfellsnes peninsula our first day, making it to the small town of Arnarstapi where we got a drink at the Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant, afterwards, settling in to our first night in the Campervan & looked outside to see the northern lights for our first time ever! On our second day we walked the trails along the cliffs of Arnarstapi, then headed up to the northern edge of Snæfellsnes to see Kirkjufellsfoss, a very iconic set of waterfalls with Kirkjufell mountain in the background which many have seen in the game of thrones series (“mountain shaped like an arrowhead”), and then a quick stop in the nearby town of Grundarfjörður for coffee at the Saga Centre, before heading towards Hvítserkur (some call it the dragon rock) with quite a few unexpected sights along the way, a little canyon and secluded waterfall, an old shipwreck, horses & reflection ponds, and finally ending the day at the HAMRAR Campsite, a short drive from downtown Akureyri
WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE VIDEO!!
WE ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMEND CampEasy

for your trip, this video is not sponsored/paid in any way, we just had an amazing experience with their van, service and ultimately our entire trip with it! They provide you with a tablet for your navigation, useful info such as points of interest, weather, messaging to CampEasy for any troubleshooting as well as being your personal hotspot which allowed us to be active through text and social media our entire stay not worrying about extra cost with our carrier or need for a local SIM card during our rental with the van. We often carried the tablet with us into cafe’s etc so we would have WiFi even away from the vehicle. ????????

TRAVEL VLOG: ICELAND
My girls and I took a quick weekend trip to Iceland and made the best of it. We were literally there for 36hrs and managed to sight see, do a quad safari tour and most importantly, Blue Lagoon.
ACCOMMODATIONS: We stayed at a hotel called “Hotel Jazz”, just a few minutes from the Keflavik Airport. The hotel clerk Mohamed was extremely accommodating, as we landed at 4am and were checking in around 6am. We rented a car which was about $60 USD and essential for traveling around the island.
BLUE LAGOON: I would plan to spend $100, ticket included and snacks/food because you’ll get hungry. With your ticket, you get admission into the lagoon and 1 free drink. It was about 20 degrees Fahrenheit but you honestly can’t tell because the water was so hot. It takes some getting use to but once you do, it feels like bath water. They do face/body masks but I opted to not do one. There was a lot of people but it wasn’t overcrowded and the staff/ facility is extremely organized- there’s a lot of traffic throughout the day and it’s Iceland’s main tourist attraction so I guess they have to be.
LAUGAVEGUR: Laugavegur is a strip located in Reykjavík with shops, clubs and bars. It’s very similar to any downtown area in any major city. The clubs and bars open around 11pm and go on until 4am. The bars are lenient with the dress code but the clubs were a bit more upscale and had a more strict dress code. Parking can be difficult so be prepared to walk a few blocks to your destination.
HALLGRIMSKIRKJA: Hallgrumskirkja is a Lutheran Parish Church location in Reykjavik, in the same area as Laugavegur. It is the tallest building in Reykjavik(244 ft tall) and the second tallest building in Iceland. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to see the inside but the outside was absolutely gorgeous (as seen in video).
FOOD: There are a lot of restaurants and bars but please beware that there is not a lot of food we’re used to in America- but this is apart of experiencing different cultures. Most places will have burgers, fries and pizza though.
FLIGHT: The flight from Boston to Keflavík was only 4hrs (SO QUICK) and back home it took about 6hrs. This is literally the distance from Boston to NY- driving, so you can certainly go for only a weekend and still enjoy yourself- like we did!
ENJOY!

24 Hours in Reykjavik - What to See and Do on a Layover in Iceland | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids
Welcome to Reykjavík Iceland!
With a 24-hour daylight in summer and more than 40 festivals, Reykjavik is the new city that never sleeps. The world's most northerly capital has a population of only 120,000, but what it lacks in people it makes up for in culture. Reykjavik is located on a peninsula shaped like a dragon's head and is tucked into a sheltered bay in south-west Iceland filled with dramatic views of the adjacent mountains across the water to the north.
Reykjavík's name is derived from the Icelandic words for smoke, reykur, and bay, vík. Legend says that in the year 874, Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson, who was in fact its first inhabitant, saw Iceland rising out of the misty sea and came ashore at a bay steamed by hot springs in the vicinity of present day Reykjavík. Today most of the houses in Reykjavík are heated by near-boiling water from the hot springs and because of this natural heating there is no air pollution. You may notice, however, that the hot water brings a slight sulfur smell to the bathroom. Ingólfur is honored with a statue on a small hill called Arnarhóll in the middle of Reykjavík.
The best way to explore Reykjavik in its full light is to experience Iceland's pure thermal energy and take a dip in one of Reykjavík's many thermal pools and spas! It’s a great source of natural therapy and an important part of Icelandic culture and a tonic for the body and mind!

Go to and enter the code MISSMINA80 for a total of $80 off your first 4 boxes, in the first month!
You've got 24 hours in Iceland. How do you spend it? If you take an overnight flight like us, you'll likely want a relaxing day. Only 20 minutes drive from the Keflavík Airport is the famous Blue Lagoon, where you can soak in its milky blue geothermal waters. It is said the silica, algae, and minerals in the warm lagoon has healing properties. Remember to book your spot in advance.
Afterwards we bite into Icelandic cuisine, drive about 45 minutes to Reykjavík, check into the capsule hostel, and enjoy some more Icelandic food.
The best way to get around Iceland is by renting a vehicle as it allows flexibility and public transportation is scarce in the countryside. There is no Uber or Lyft, so other options include taking the Flybus or taxi. A four-seater taxi ride from Keflavík International Airport to central Reykjavík is around $115 US (according to Iceland Mag). You can also use tour company services.

This is Holiday Extras’ Travel guides and we’re here in Iceland. We’ll be giving you all the essential information you need to Travel Better. We’ll be covering money, language, tips on where to go and even how to see the Northern Lights. But first, here’s a bit about the country itself.
Iceland is between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, about a three hour flight north from London. Iceland is unlike anywhere we’ve been before, its volcanic landscapes and picturesque backdrops create this almost untouched feeling and it’ll make you fall in love with the country.
Most international flights will arrive at Keflavik (KEF) airport, which is 40 minutes outside the capital city of Reykjavik and it’s here, where we’ll start.
Greyline and Flybus run transfer buses 35 minutes after each landing. Both services offer a hotel drop off at selected hotels for an additional fee. they cover most hotels but if you isn’t on there, you can find out which stop is closest and just walk the rest of the way.
An airport taxi will set you back around 12,000 Krona for the 45 minute journey. However, self-drive holidays are really popular here and, if this is ahwt you’re planning, then it makes sense to pick up your hire car at the airport, before you head into Reykjavik.
Reykjavik is the base for most holidays in Iceland. It’s the world’s most northernly capital city and it’s a hub for Icelandic culture. Reykjavik is the embodiment of the Iceland culture of proud self-sufficiency and fierce interest in the arts. There’s no McDonald’s or Starbucks here; instead, its streets are lined with independent coffee shops and boutiques. There’s always something going on and the nightlife is legendary. Don’t forget to pick up your free copy of the Reykjavik Grapevine for what’s going on while you’re here.
It’s worth trying to stay in the centre as a room in the middle puts everything within walking distance. AirBnBs and hotels and plentiful but if you’re coming in the summer, book in advance because it can get super busy. If you want to book a tour out of the city, then head to Laugavegur. There are loads of tourist information outlets here that can help you with anything you want to do.
After spending some time in Reykjavik, we recommend jumping in your car and taking a day to explore the Golden Circle. It’s one of Iceland’s most popular tours, taking in the Geyser, Thingvellir National Park and Gulfoss.
If you’re staying a bit longer, then the south coast is a must. Follow the Ring Road all the way to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, stopping off at sites like Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss and some of the world’s most beautiful black sand beaches. And of course, don’t forget to stop by the Blue Lagoon on your way back. It’s only 20 minutes outside Keflavik airport and it’s the perfect way to end your Icelandic adventure.
Getting around Iceland on your own is surprisingly straight-forward. The main Ring Road connects all the major towns and if you stick to it, you can’t really go wrong. Now bear in mind that driving here is nothing like driving at home so there are a few things you need to know…
Summer is the time to do a driving holiday, as the roads will be open and the conditions will be good with lots of daylight. The weather in Winter can make driving difficult and once you leave Reykjavik it can get quite dangerous. It’s not recommended unless you really know what you’re doing; getting stuck in a white-out isn’t fun.
If you plan on straying off the Ring Road, then hire a four wheel drive car. the roads can be uneven and pot-holes are common. Do not go on F Roads, as hire cars are not allowed on them. Off-road driving is forbidden as it damages the environment. You’ll get fined around 350,000 Krona if caught.
