Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history.
Iceland has a sub-polar climate. The peak travel period is during summer (Jun–Aug), with mild weather and nearly 24 hours of daylight. Thjodhatid (Aug, Heimaey Island) is an outdoor music festival with bonfires and fireworks. The Iceland Airwaves music festival (Nov, Reykjavik) features world-famous artists and Icelandic bands. Winter (Dec–Feb) is cold, dark and rainy, with strong wind. The Winter Lights Festival (Feb, Reykjavik) has illuminated landmarks and cultural events.

My girlfriend and I just returned from our winter in Iceland trip and I had to share with you some of our incredible adventures and the truly epic landscapes! It all started with a South Shore Adventure where we saw the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, explored the black beach and learned about the active volcanoes that make up this otherworldly country. We also experienced the blue lagoon, Gullfoss and the awesome marine life. Reykjavik is an awesome location and a perfect LGBT friendly base (we actually get more hassle in London). October is a great time to explore Iceland – it snowed while we were at the Blue Lagoon and we even got to see the magical Northern Lights. An unforgettable winter holiday!
