Icy Strait Point is a privately owned tourist destination just outside the small village of Hoonah, Alaska. It is located on Chichagof Island and is named after the nearby Icy Strait. Owned by Huna Totem Corporation, it is the only privately owned cruise destination in Alaska, as most stops are owned by the cities in which they are located. Huna Totem Corporation is owned by approximately 1,350 Alaskan Natives with aboriginal ties to Hoonah and the Glacier Bay area. Many of them are of the Tlingit people.
Location: 108 Cannery Road, Hoonah, Alaska
Description Icy Strait Point
=====================
The corporation's goal was to preserve the character of the local village and culture as much as possible, despite the influx of visitors, while still providing substantial help to local economic prospects. They have won several awards for doing this, including in 2008 a Travel to a Better World Award from National Geographic Traveler magazine, in 2012 a Global Vision Award from Travel + Leisure magazine, and in 2013 a finalist World Savers Award from Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
The site includes the 1930s Hoonah Packing Company facility, now converted into a museum, restaurant, and shops. In the view of two travel books, the cannery at the site has been beautifully restored. At the dock, traditionally garbed presenters offer a look at Huna Tlingit culture, and an indoor theatrical production along the same lines is also offered. All shops located there are owned by Alaskans. Alaska's Wildest Kitchen shows visitors the importance of salmon and subsistence fishing in the Tlingit culture and features a culinary instruction space where local residents demonstrate how to fillet salmon and halibut and turn them into burgers, spreads, casseroles, and grilled entrees. The local town of Hoonah is a mile's walk, and reveals contemporary Tlingit life. A 2014 USA Today article described the chance to experience Alaska Native culture in small villages such as Hoonah one of the ten reasons to visit the state.
For the most part, however, Icy Strait Point is a jumping-off point for shore excursions for the cruise passengers. The most well-known of these is the ZipRider zip-line that completes its run near the facility, which was constructed by the Huna Totem Corporation. Opening in May 2007, it measures 5,330 feet (1,620 m) and made claims to being the longest in the world, or later to at least being one of the longest and highest – at 1,330 feet (410 m) – in North America. It has been rated a statewide must do attraction by the Anchorage Daily News. The zip-line was also featured in September 2013 on Travel Channel's Ride-iculous show.
Another popular excursion is to search for coastal brown bears on the nearby Spasski River, where sightings happen but are not guaranteed. Other wildlife, such as bald eagles, are frequently seen in the area. Whale watching excursions are also conducted, as the facility is near the Point Adolphus feeding area for humpback whales. By 2011, attractions at and around Icy Strait Point had reached the level where they were getting non-cruise visitors as well.

Whale Watching at Icy Strait Point
Brief highlights of our trip whale watching with Hoonah Travel Adventures and Captain Paul while we were visiting Icy Strait Point on our cruise.
We saw a lot more whales than this, but they are very difficult to capture on camera sometimes!
Alaska 2016: Icy Strait Point May 30
Hoonah town with 760 residents. This felt like the real Alaska. Our excursion was with a local couple who has a small beautiful boat that carries six. The wife picked us up and drove us through town struggling to make the town interesting; after what seemed like ten minutes we were at the marina for the boat ride. The goal was to find whales as this area seems to be most attractive to them. We found otters, sea lions and whales; we have more otters and sea lions in our area than we saw, however. We captured several tails of whales, one of them pretty close to our boat as you can see in the video; however none breached. Meeting this charming couple and learning about them and their business was a very rewarding portion of this excursion.
Humpback Whale Feeding - Icy Strait, Alaska
Forgive the shaky camera - we had to walk briskly to keep up with this whale! It was so close to shore. It would make a circular net of bubbles to herd its prey (krill) and gobble them up in one mighty gulp.

The City and Borough of Juneau is the capital city of Alaska. It is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan panhandle and is the 2nd largest city in the United States by area. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-District of Alaska was moved from Sitka as dictated by the U.S. Congress in 1900. The municipality unified on July 1, 1970, when the city of Juneau merged with the city of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough to form the current home rule municipality.
The area of Juneau is larger than that of Rhode Island and Delaware individually and almost as large as the two states combined. Downtown Juneau 58°18′07″N 134°25′11″W is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. As of the 2010 census, the City and Borough had a population of 31,275. As of July 2011 the population estimate from the United States Census Bureau is 32,164, making it the second most populous city in Alaska.[3] However, Fairbanks is the second-largest metropolitan area in the state, with more than 97,000 residents.
Juneau is named after gold prospector Joe Juneau, though the place was for a time called Rockwell and then Harrisburg (after Juneau's co-prospector, Richard Harris). The Tlingit name of the town is Dzántik'i Héeni (Base of the Flounder's River, dzánti 'flounder', --kʼi 'base', héen 'river'), and Auke Bay just north of Juneau proper is called Áak'w (Little lake, áa 'lake', -kʼ 'diminutive') in Tlingit. The Taku River, just south of Juneau, was named after the cold t'aakh wind, which occasionally blows down from the mountains.
Downtown Juneau sits at sea level, with tides averaging 16 feet (5 m), below steep mountains about 3,500 feet (1,100 m) to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) high. Atop these mountains is the Juneau Icefield, a large ice mass from which about 30 glaciers flow; two of these, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier, are visible from the local road system; the Mendenhall glacier has been generally retreating; its front face is declining both in width and height.
The Alaska State Capitol in downtown Juneau was originally built as the Federal and Territorial Building in 1931. Prior to statehood, it housed federal government offices, the federal courthouse and a post office. It also housed the territorial legislature and many other territorial offices, including that of the governor. Today, it is still the home of the state legislature and the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor. Other executive branch offices have largely moved elsewhere, in Juneau or elsewhere in the state, in the ongoing battle between branches for space in the building, as well as the decades-long capital move issue. Recent discussion has been focused between relocating the seat of state government outside of Juneau and building a new capitol building in Juneau. Neither position has advanced very far. The Alaska Committee, a local community advocacy group, has led efforts to thus far keep the capital in Juneau.

Alaska, day 7. WE WENT HIKING IN ALASKA, NATURE AND NATURE, THE BEST │ My travel Journal
We went hiking in Icy Strait Point and also in Kodiak, ALASKA. It is so nice to go for walks in the nature, stay away from the cities, from the civilization, go to places where you can get just by walking, THE BEST.
We went to Hoonah, such a small and town, the people are so warm. 70 % of the people in Hoonah are natives from the Tlingit community.
Then we went to Kodiak, We found an Aquarium and the entrance was for free, here they let you touch some of the sea animals, so interesting and nice to see beautiful animals.

Hoonah Alaska
Hoonah (Xunaa in Tlingit) is a largely Tlingit community on Chichagof Island, located in Alaska's panhandle in the southeast region of the state. It is 30 miles (48 km) west of Juneau, across the Alaskan Inside Passage. Hoonah is the only first-class city on Chichagof Island, the 109th largest island in the world and the 5th largest island in the United States. At the 2010 census the population was 760, down from 860 at the 2000 census. In the summer the population can swell to over 1,300 depending on fishing, boating, hiking and hunting conditions. Hoonah became the official spelling in 1901, with establishment of the Hoonah branch of the United States Post Office. Xunaa means protected from the North Wind in the Tlingit language.
