Idlewild is a Huge Park in Downtown Reno, NV
Idlewild Park is the largest park in Downtown Reno, NV. This park offers a lot of parking and the perfect setting for your family get together or celebration. There's a fun small train for the children and fun adults to ride and there's walking paths right next to the Truckee River. Reno is a city in the U.S. state of Nevada, located in the western part of the state, approximately 22 miles from Lake Tahoe. Known as The Biggest Little City in the World, Reno is famous for its hotels and casinos. It is the county seat of Washoe County, in the northwestern part of the state. The city sits in a high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and its downtown area (along with Sparks) occupies a valley informally known as the Truckee Meadows. It is named after slain Union Major General Jesse L. Reno.
Reno is the third-most populous city in Nevada after Las Vegas and Henderson and the most populous city in the state outside the Las Vegas Valley. Before the late 1950s, Reno was the gambling capital of the United States, but Las Vegas' rapid growth, American Airlines' 2000 buyout of Reno Air, and the growth of Native American gaming in California have reduced its business. Older casinos were torn down (Mapes Hotel, Fitzgerald's Nevada Club, Primadonna, Horseshoe Club, Harold's Club, Palace Club), or smaller casinos like the Comstock, Sundowner, Golden Phoenix, Kings Inn, Money Tree, Virginian, and Riverboat were either closed or were converted into condos.
Because of its location, Reno has traditionally drawn the majority of its California tourists and gamblers from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, while Las Vegas has historically served more tourists from Southern California and the Phoenix area.
Several local large hotel casinos have shown significant growth and have moved gaming further away from the downtown core. These larger hotel casinos are the Atlantis, the Peppermill and the Grand Sierra Resort. The Peppermill was chosen as the most outstanding Reno gaming/hotel property by Casino Player and Nevada magazines. In 2005, the Peppermill Reno began a $300 million Tuscan-themed expansion.

Northwest Reno is on the southern side of the foothills separating Reno from the North Valleys and consists of diverse housing neighborhoods like West University, Kings Row, and West 4th Street. The northwest Reno community is 10 minutes from downtown Reno and the University of Nevada, Reno. When you’re near the university, stop by Archie’s, a treasured bar and restaurant. South of that 24-hour pub is Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and Ike’s Sandwiches.
Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is east of the restaurants and is one of the largest recreational areas in Reno. The park provides a dog park, hiking trails, a playground, volleyball court, and the William D May Museum and Arboretum. The Great Reno Balloon Race calls Rancho San Rafael home, taking over the northern fields every fall and drawing nearly 150,000 visitors for the event. Whitaker Park is a neighborhood park north of downtown with a playground and tennis courts. Idlewild Park is another fantastic recreational area south of the community. The park is home to baseball and softball fields, a basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court, playground, and the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway. The park is complete with rose gardens and a community pool alongside the magnificent Truckee River. Plus, Idlewild Park hosts Food Truck Friday every summer.
North McCarran Boulevard has numerous shopping centers available to residents near May Anne Avenue. Save Mart, Flowing Tide, Ijji 4 Korean Bar-B-Que, and Chase Bank are inside the Canyon Center, with a Planet Fitness on its way. Across the street is a Walmart Supercenter and Doughboy’s Donuts. Ridgeview Plaza is south of Walmart, providing a Safeway, L & L Hawaiian Barbecue, Kohl’s, Ross, Wingstop, and Chipotle. McQueen Crossing Shopping Center is further west on Robb Drive with Raley’s, Umpqua Bank, Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill, and Sakana Express.
The Washoe County School District serves northwest Reno through Grace Warner Elementary School. This school is near West 7th Street within a residential neighborhood. Clayton Middle School is a mile from Grace Warner on Kings Row. The school backs up to Northwest Park and Pool providing large fields and amenities accessible to students. McQueen High School opened in 1982 to serve the students of Northwest Reno south of the Northwest Reno Library. The school earned its name from Dr. Robert McQueen, a former professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. The university is east of the neighborhood with university housing spread throughout the community.

City of Reno, NV Rainbow Trout Sculptures Glisten with Color add Idlewild Park Pond
Artist Eileen Gay was given an unusual task, which she achieved with flying colors. She completed a set of mosaic sculptures that involved recycling part of a tree that had been carved into fish that had to come down. It also involved an installation in one of the ponds at Idlewild Park. The project - Rainbow Trout Tree is beautiful. Eileens work was made possible through a generous donation from Capstone Development and a Community Pride Grant from the Ward One Neighborhood Advisory Board.
