Inside Bali's Batik History and Where to Find The Real Art
How did Indonesia’s most sacred textile migrate from Java to Bali? In this weeks deeper understanding I visit Batik Popiler (the first batik store on the island), a local art studio in Ubud who is still teaching the art, and the wholesale market in historic Denpasar.
Do you own a piece of batik? If so, where did you get it from?

Threads of Life: Conserving Indonesia's Textile Heritage
Threads of Life is a fair trade business that works with culture and conservation to alleviate poverty in rural Indonesia. The heirloom-quality textiles and baskets we commission are made with local materials and natural dyes to an exquisite standard usually seen only in museums. We work directly with over 1,000 women on 10 islands across Indonesia, helping weavers to form independent cooperatives, to recover the skills of their ancestors, to manage their resources sustainably, and to express their culture identity while building their financial security.

Ikat Weaving & Local Culture in Remote Indonesia

The making of traditional Balinese handwoven ikat fabric
The traditional process of making this extraordinary fabric is showcased. We produce the fabric in our village workshop in Gianyar, Bali.
Our artisan, who work mostly part time from home, work using methods virtually unchanged over the decades.
We also empower our women artisan by enabling them to work at a flexible pace, while still being able to attend to their other responsibilities at home.
Hoffman Bali Batiks Factory
Hoffman Bali Batiks are truly magic fabrics, designed and made specifically for quilters and home sewists around the world. Each yard is made by hand at the Hoffman Bali Factory on the island paradise of Bali. The motifs (artwork) of the batiks and colorways created for the hand-dyes (mottled blender fabrics) originate with textile artists employed at the Hoffman California Fabrics' headquarters in Mission Viejo, California. The artwork and colorstory boards are sent to the Bali factory, where master craftspeople produce the fabrics using age-old methods of dyeing and wax-stamping with a metal stamp (also known as a chop). Hoffman California Fabrics creates hundreds of new designs of batiks and hand-dyes each year, producing thousands of yards of fabrics annually for use in keepsake quilting and sophisticated home-sewing and apparel projects. See fabric swatches, download free quilt patterns and learn more about this entrepreneurial, family-owned company founded in 1924 at hoffmanfabrics.com.
Balinese Textiles
This cotton fabric is made with natural dyed yarn in Bali. She will complete about 1.5 metres in a full day's work.
