Miyako Island (Miyakojima), located 300 kilometers south of Okinawa Main Island, is known for some of Japan's best beaches and as a great destination for diving and snorkeling in the coral reefs.
The island is the fourth largest island in Okinawa Prefecture. It is mostly covered by sugar cane fields and a few towns, among which Hirara is the largest with a moderate range of eating place, such as restaurants and bars. Resort hotels and pensions are found across the island. Unlike other parts of Okinawa, there are no habu snakes in Miyako.
Miyako Island offers a small range of other attractions, including places of natural beauty and cultural interest, and a couple of elegant bridges to neighboring islands.
Ikema and Kurima Bridges
Freely traversable by car, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot
Miyako is connected to two of its neighboring islands by the bridges. At the northern tip of Miyako, the 1.4 kilometer long Ikema Ohashi leads to Ikema Island, while the 1.7 kilometer long Kurima Ohashi connects Kurima Island with Miyako in the southwest.
Access Information:
Miyako Island is a relatively small island, measuring about 25 kilometers from south to north and about 15 kilometers from east to west.
A rental car is the most convenient means of getting around Miyako.

Geography
Miyako-jima lies approximately 300 kilometres (190 mi) southwest of Okinawa Island and 400 kilometres (250 mi) east of Taipei, Taiwan.[1] With an area of 158.70 square kilometres (61.27 sq mi), Miyako is the fourth-largest island in Okinawa Prefecture.[2] The island is triangular in shape and is composed of Ryukyuan limestone.[1] Miyako-jima is subject to drought and is frequently struck by typhoons.[1]
Miyako-jima is well known for its beauty, particularly the Eastern Cape (東平安名岬 Higashi-hennazaki), which is considered by many as one of the most beautiful spots in Japan. Other notable locations include Maehama beach, the German Cultural Center, Painagama Beach, and the sights on Irabu-jima. There are three islands close by which are connected by bridges to Miyako-jima, Irabujima (as of early 2015), Ikemajima (池間島 Ikema-jima), and Kurimajima (来間島 Kurima-jima). The Miyako language, one of several Ryukyuan languages, is spoken here.

Main article: Typhoon Maria (2018)
A tropical depression formed on July 3. On the next day, the system intensified into Tropical Storm Maria. Early on July 5, Maria intensified into a severe tropical storm, while the JTWC classified the system as a Category 1 typhoon. Explosive intensification ensued, and later that day, Maria became a super typhoon and the first Category 5-equivalent storm of this basin since Nock-ten in 2016. Shortly afterwards, Maria underwent an eyewall replacement cycle, and it weakened below super typhoon status the following day. By July 8, however, Maria had completed the eyewall replacement cycle and regained Category 5-equivalent intensity.

Irabu-Ohashi Bridge is a bridge between Miyakojima and Irabujima in Okinawa Prefecture. The total length of the bridge is 3,540 meters, and it is the longest bridge in Japan you can go across for free of charge. The bridge is around 9 years old and was opened in January 2015. On sunny days, you can enjoy driving while gazing at the expansive blue sky and the spectacular view of the glistening emerald green sea. Two other islands are connected to Miyakojima by bridge: Ikema and Kurima. Considered the longest farm road bridge in Japan the Kurima-bridge was completed in 1995 and boasts an impressive 1,690 meter in length. Ikema Ohashi Bridge is a total of 1,425m long and was opened in 1992 to connect Ikema Island with Miyako Island. Of the three bridges connecting the MIyako Islands, this was the first to be opened. Suspended over the extraordinarily clear, emerald green sea, Ikema Ohashi Bridge is the quintessential MIyako Island location. Be careful not to get too caught up in the sights surrounding you while you're driving.
