The Ilinizas are two peaks located 55km Southwest of Quito. Iliniza Sur (5250m) is famous for being the sixth highest mountain in the country whilst Iliniza Norte (5126m) is the eighth highest.
Prehistorically, they were one volcano but today the two peaks are separated by a saddle of about 1km in width. Both peaks offer some of the more enjoyable climbing in Ecuador. For the exprience hiker or soft climber, the North peak is a truly fun climb with some heart- stopping scrambles thrown in.It offers great opportunity to observe volcanic crater, paramo and the whole valley of the volcanoes. This is the south Illiniza! As you can see, these Illinizas are very hard to conquer????️ The Illinizas are excellent mountains for acclimatization to altitude, and are frequently used as a preparatory climb to higher peaks such as Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and Cayambe.

In June, 2018, four climbing friends and I formed the “Ecuador 2018 Expedition” for a second Quest to Touch the Sun. On Monday, June 11, we climbed up to the Refugio Nuevos Horizontes or “New Horizons”, a refuge that sits at 15,420 feet in the saddle between the two Illiniza peaks. We will rest here before our alpine start early the next day and climb to the summit of Illiniza Norte, a 16,815 foot eroded volcanic peak. Join us as we explore more of the beauty that is Ecuador. RacingThePlanet Ecuador 2015: Foothills of Ilinizas
The 4 Deserts Race Series is a collection of four, 250 kilometer, six stage footraces across the world's largest and most forbidding deserts including the Gobi March in China, the Sahara Race in Namibia, the Atacama Crossing in Chile and The Last Desert in Antarctica. Established in 2002, in 2016 the 4 Deserts Race Series will celebrate its 50th race.
Competitors are challenged to go beyond the limits of their physical and mental endurance. Racing self-supported in the most inhospitable climates and formidable landscapes, they must carry all their own equipment and food and are only provided with drinking water and a place in a tent each night to rest.
The series, named again by TIME magazine in 2010 as one of the world's Top 10 Endurance Competitions, comprises the Atacama Crossing in Chile, the Gobi March in China, the Sahara Race in Egypt and The Last Desert in Antarctica.
