Jaume Plensa: Human Landscape
On view January 24, 2016, through May 15, 2016
One of the world’s foremost living sculptors, Spanish artist Jaume Plensa (b. 1955) has created large-scale artworks related to the human figure for public places around the globe. This exhibition, the artist’s largest to date in the United States, features numerous indoor as well as outdoor installations, engaging viewers even before they enter the Museum. Interested not only in the visual arts but also in literature, psychology, biology, language, and history, Jaume Plensa creates sculptures and installations that unify individuals through connections of spirituality, the body, and collective memory. He uses a wide range of materials—including steel, cast iron, resin, light, sound, and more—to lend physical weight and volume to multiple components of the human condition and soul.
Public and Private—The Figure Examined: Masterworks from the Kasser Mochary Art Foundation
On View: February 12, 2016 – May 30, 2016
This exhibition examines one of the most universal subjects in art, the portrayal of the human figure. From the universally recognizable to the intimate and introspective, Public and Private presents more than 100 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by many of the most important artists of the late 19th and 20th centuries, including Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Diego Rivera, Auguste Rodin, Paul Signac, Andy Warhol, and others. Juxtaposing their diverse approaches to a common subject reveals radical stylistic changes, as well as a broad spectrum of political, philosophical, and aesthetic meanings associated with the human form. Initially collected by Elizabeth and Alexander Kasser, the artworks of Public and Private now belong to the Kasser Mochary Art Foundation, a generous lender to museums worldwide.

Day 4 at the World Cup
Day 4 at the World Cup
Today is the fourth day in Russia, and we are here, for those who are just getting to see this, we are in St. Petersburg, Russia to see the World Cup. Today is the fourth day in Russia, and we have experienced incredible things, we have seen a part of Russia that the media does not count, that is totally different from what they show and apart from everything that is something incredible. Today we have a slightly more planned itinerary than the previous days; We are recording each most of each day so they can live this with us.
Today we are going to collect the ballots of the Uruguay against Portugal match, and after that, we will pick up Andres' ID Fan, who mysteriously did not send it to him on time and after that, we go to the airport to take the flight to be able to go see the game today, by the way, I recommend you arrive with a lot of time to the flights you have inside Russia, because the security of the airports are before entering the airport, then it may take a little longer than expected. I think one of the experiences that we will always take, are the trips we have made with the drivers of Uber, seriously, I seriously recommend taking Uber because not only have a quieter trip, but can meet amazing people like Alex or have stories to tell as the second driver that I do not remember his name.
I think This trip has been very fun, the people are great, the weather is very good, the city in general is beautiful, the museums they have, the history, I think that if they come to Russia at some point, they should go to the Museums, especially the Hermitage Museum, is very impressive. The facilities that this city has for foreigners is gigantic. The food is very Americanized, it is very similar to what they give in the United States, I do not find any difference. Of course, I imagine that it varies in different cities, because Russia is a very vast country, with too many cultures, and I imagine that in other parts of Russia it will be different, but here in St. Petersburg it is incredible.
I would recommend that you visit this city, because I know you will not regret it. And now we are going to enjoy the match and see you tomorrow on our fifth day in Russia!

Day 4 at the World Cup
Vasily Tryndyk's best artworks. www.tryndyk.com
Vasily was born in Russia in a province of the former Soviet Union (Kabardino-Balkaria). He discovered art with his father Nicolay, a known painter from the Caucasus region. Encouraged to pursue artistic studies, he enrolled at the Art Academy in Leningrad (St. Petersburg). In 1982, he became a member of the Artist’s Union of the ex-USSR and participated in several exhibitions, including in Moscow. He is somewhat of a celebrity in his own country and was awarded a medal in recognition of his career as a painter.
The artist left Russia two years later and moved with his family to the Netherlands, where he lives and works today. Anonymous yet again in this new country, he gradually became known and exhibited in several Dutch cities (Nimègue, Eindhoven, Maastricht, Amsterdam) and in Germany. Vasily’s paintings are now found in many museums and collections around the world (Germany, Canada, United States, Russia, the Netherlands...).
His father still remains his main source of inspiration. But he also admires the masters of the Flemish school (fifteenth - seventeenth centuries) and modern painters Gustav Klimt (Austrian painter, nineteenth-twentieth centuries) and Marc Chagall (Russian-born French painter, twentieth century).
Vasily uses the brightness of oil paints to illuminate his paintings. His palette alternates between warm and cold tones. Strong ground shadows are the only details that create depth. His melancholic, faceless characters stand on a solid background. Some of them recall the world of entertainment (dancers, musicians, acrobats) or the commedia dell'arte. Their anonymity allows the artist to universally reach us. The viewer can imagine the character of their choice (self-reflection, a loved one, an acquaintance...)
Vasily’s painting focuses on the essentials, and tends to revive deep feelings (tenderness, generosity, sharing) that have been drowned in the tumult of modern life.
