Catch Of The Day - Canggu, 23 January 2020
You'll often see a local fisherman or two casting a line in the shore-break here at Canggu but I've never them land anything, so I'm a little surprised to see 6:09 pull in a nice pan sized fish.
The tide, swell and wind were ideal at Canggu yesterday with a few cover-ups and plenty of clean walls pulsing through all morning.
Variable winds are forecast for the next week or, so are we done with the 'wet season' already? It's shaping up that way which is good news for surfers of Bali.

Beginners Day At Batu Bolong - 18 March 2019
The swell has been slowly fading away over the last few days, and even though there was a new swell forecast for today there was no sign of it this morning.
Not great news for the majority, but for those new to surfing conditions were ideal. Clean knee to waist high sets rolled through the lineup at Batu Bolong all morning, and there were a bunch of learners and intermediate surfers all over it.

Local Style - Best Surf Breaks in Bali Indonesia, Episode 9
Music: 'Malia' by Sashamon
Photo: Dalmas
Bukit Peninsula in Bali is one of the most iconic surf destinations in the world. There are a number of breaks that line the coastline and each has it's own characteristics...one has more barrels, one breaks left and right, and another is the perfect beginner's beach break. Good stuff to know if you've never surfed it. Surf expert Steve Levine of Surfulu took Local Style's Mike Rodger on a boat tour of these breaks and dialed us in, as only a local can.

Split Peaks - Canggu, 14 December 2019
Split peaks are a fairly rare commodity here in Bali but the Sandbar at Canggu will dish them up sometimes. The right is usually a short meal, but any chance to go right in Bali gets two thumbs up from the natural footers.
The wind stayed light as the tide moved in, so there were plenty of nice waves, particularly between Echo and the Sandbar.

Good Looking Canggu - 7 July 2019
With all the swell we've had lately, Bali's West coast hasn't exactly been front of mind. But there was enough of a drop in size to warrant a trip to Canggu yesterday, and even though there were a few over sized wobblers, the small to medium sets had plenty of shape and the odd tube section.
The wind was playing nice, and by the time we left at around 11am conditions were still fairly clean.
The forecast is for a further drop in size, so we'll probably head back to this part of the coast tomorrow. After that, it looks like the Bukit will be throwing up some more overhead goodness.

Morning Glass Job - Canggu, 5 August 2019
It has been a banner year for the SE Trade wind. Two thumbs up by surfers on the Bukit and kite fliers alike.
Not such great news for surfers around Canggu, but the last couple of mornings have seen the Trades slack off, making for some very clean lines on Bali's West coast.
A medium sized swell and an incoming tide combined for some shapely peaks at the Sandbar and later at Pererenan Rivermouth with plenty of guys and gals getting their shred on.

Take A Swing At Canggu - 5 October 2018
It's never a great idea to drop in on someone. It's a particularly bad idea doing it to a local. It's worse again if he's bigger than you. I didn't notice anything go down between these two after that swing and a miss and it looked like the guy dropping in might have been oblivious to his near miss.
When the conditions are any good, surfing in Canggu usually requires a certain amount of hustle if you want your wave count to jump to your other hand. Maybe the white water warriors are the one's with the best deal.
Not much variation in the tide meant all the different peaks from Echo to the Carpark had waves and it was an eclectic crowd riding all sorts of shapes, even the dogs were mixing it up.

Surfing in Canggu @Bali Island. Indonesia
The surf spots we head for are graded according to the various surf levels and selected depending on the tide, swell and wind conditions.
Our guides are all trained in life-saving, they’re familiar with the island, are safe drivers and can give you competent briefing on the spot. Here they’ll point out the characteristics of reef surfing or any potential hazards.
The guides always surf with you in the water, giving you tips and showing you tricks. Three times a week the sessions are filmed so that the analysis afterwards can help you to identify the mistakes you’re making and sort these out. You can also take part in twice-weekly theory lessons on material maintenance, wave know-how and surf rules.
Off Season Special - Canggu, 8 December 2019
We're well into the off season for this side of the coast here in Bali, and the dominant wind flow has been out of the West (onshore for Canggu).
The mornings however have been very calm, so with a medium sized swell running and a mid to incoming tide there were some great waves at Canggu on the 8th of December.

Surf Play Love Boutique Surf Camp Canggu Bali
We are very happy to announce that we are launching a boutique surf camp :). After years of calling Bali our second home, we thought it would be a great idea to share our favorite aspects of the island with you all. We wanted to create an experience that would allow you to enjoy the peaceful energy of Bali, experience the warmth and friendliness of the local people, enjoy the amazing surf, and savor the international cuisine. The result is the inaugural Surf Play Love Boutique Surf Camp in Canggu Bali. What distinguishes us from the average surf camp are the much smaller group sizes, increased attention from the surf instructors, and the particular attention to community building. Each cohort is limited to only 6 people, each with their individual room and ensuite bath, in a two-story 6 bedroom guesthouse, with a beautiful lush garden, just steps from my personal favorite surf break in Canggu Bali. Every two students get their own surf coach, providing for a high level of personalized instruction for any level of surfer, from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced.
Because we have been fortunate enough to experience this island for many years, we will share our favorite recommendations for things to do, breaks to surf, and places to eat. It will be just like having us and our friends as your personal guides to this beautiful island.
Please check out our website below for more details, including a cool little video Simi put together to give you a taste of what the Surf Play Love Boutique Surf Camp is like.
See you in the lineup,
Simi and Shan
Morning Glory - Canggu, 24 December 2019
It was another glorious and glassy morning at Canggu yesterday, and the fun sized swell combined nicely with a medium to incoming tide.
Early morning sessions are always a good bet, but they've been extremely dependable over the last month. So if you want to increase your odds of scoring your favourite wave, now's the time to hit it early.

Canggu Beach Bali - Canggu Surf
Canggu Beach Bali
Canggu, a fantastic little town in Bali that is popular among young travelers, surfers, and digital nomads. Hidden behind the bigger and busier cities Kuta and Seminyak, Canggu is holding on to a backpack laid-back town vibe where lush green rice fields are surrounding the countless hipster cafes, fantastic restaurants, yoga studios and loads of creative inspiration.
Canggu is split into three major areas; Batu Bolong, Berawa, and Pererenan. Spend a few nights of your 3-week Bali Route at a boutique hotel, fill your belly with delicious Western and Indonesian food and have a surf.
Canggu versus Seminyak
Good to know is that Canggu does not have beautiful beaches like Seminyak so if you’re planning to spend your holiday in one spot, Seminyak might be a better option for you.
Spend your afternoon at one of the hip pool – or beach bars in Canggu. All beautifully decorated bars Canggu’s best bars are a great place to hang with friends, enjoy music, drinks and a chilled afternoon with friends.

Surfing in Canggu
With many, Bali is surfing. Canggu has waves suitable for surfers of every level. Motorbikes with surfboards attached driving towards one of the beaches ready to hit the waves, you will see these throughout the entire day. Expect surfers to be on their boards at 6 AM and can definitely get crowded quickly.
There are three well-known surf spots in Canggu:
1. Echo Beach (intermediate)
2. Berawa Beach
3. Batu Balong Beach (at Old Man’s)
Bali surf season runs from May to September although surfing is possible year-round. Rent a board or take some lessons and hit the waves!

Light Wind Mornings Are Back - Canggu, 8 October 2019
We may not have a ton of swell on tap, but glassy mornings mean we can surf some of the more exposed breaks here in Bali.
The SE trade hasn't disappeared completely, showing up for some late afternoon grooming on the Bukit, but for West and East coast surfers it's a nice change.
Canggu had some nice, clean ones before the wind started playing up late morning, but even after it shifted there were still some rippable walls.
