STORYLINE:
Police in Kosovo increased security in the capital Pristina on Sunday ahead of former U.S. President Bill Clinton's arrival where he is to unveil an 11-foot (3.5-metre) statue of himself.
Police placed steel barriers at the site where the statue was to be unveiled and people in the streets waved U.S. and Kosovo flags.
Thousands of people were expected to flock into the capital to welcome Clinton, who is considered a hero for launching NATO's (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999.
The alliance's 78-day air war forced Serb troops out of Kosovo, paving the way for Kosovo's secession.
One ethnic Albanian, Kosovo's Albanians owed a lot to Clinton and defined him as the man of the century.

Clinton was expected to meet local leaders and address Kosovo's 120-seat assembly before attending the statue-unveiling ceremony.

So far, 62 countries have recognised Kosovo's independence, including the U.S. and most states in the European Union.

A slice of life living in Tirana, Albania. This is my last day unfortunately and go about the business that people usually do before the leave somewhere cool and affordable. Stock up on stuff, eat lots of good food and further explore the area. Tirana has a bad rep like most of Albania and from what I experienced, it's totally unwarranted. I had a fantastic time trying a bit of living in Tirana and living in Albania in general.
I say living in as opposed to visiting because I didn't really do much touristy stuff compared to just go about my day to day life while I was there. Tirana and Albania in general are places I'd like to return to one day during the summer to get another taste; cool spot.

About Tirana
Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, Tirana has a long history that has included communities started by the Illyrians (who coined the name Tërana, which eventually became Tirana), Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Proclaimed the temporary capital of the newly independent capital of the country of Albania in 1920, it was deemed to be the permanent capital in 1925, which served to accelerate its growth. Falling under the Soviet sphere of influence following the outcome of the Second World War, its architecture mirrored the Brutalist style of building found elsewhere throughout the rest of Russia and Eastern Europe. Since then though, renovation efforts and new construction since the end of Communism in the 1990's has freshened things up, and its young population has lifted the spirits of this place in recent years. The nightlife scene is hot, cafes are full following the conclusion of the work day, and rising economic prosperity has given rise to a sense of optimism everywhere you go. Combined with significantly lower prices compared with their Italian neighbors across the Adriatic, and you have an excellent urban escape that will get your Albanian trip off to the right start.
Places to visit
Start your tour of Tirana in Skanderbeg Square. A popular public gathering place for residents, its centrepiece is a monument to Albania's greatest hero, and with numerous restaurants and cafes ringing its periphery, it is also a great place to watch people stroll by. Et'hem Bey Mosque should be next on your list, as its long history that dates back to the 19th century, as well as its central role in helping the people defy Communist authorities in the early 1990's, when 10,000 worshipers streamed into the prayer hall after having been shut down by the totalitarian government for almost 50 years. The Islamic art inside is magnificent, but be sure to dress respectfully. The National Historical Museum will help visitors understand the challenges the country face during Communist times, as well as how life was during the days of Ottomans, Byzantines, Romans, and in earlier eras. Additionally, there is also a pavilion that profiles the life and times of Mother Teresa, who was born and raised in Albania. Finally, cruise through the National Art Gallery of Albania, as it contains visual art from nationally famous creatives, which includes Socialist Realism paintings from this nation's Communist days.
Things to do
Those looking for a break from the city, and a great vantage point from which to photograph Tirana from above will want to ascend Mount Dajti. Serviced by a cable car, visitors can go hiking, horse riding, and skiing in the winter. More urbane-minded travelers will want to have fun at the Taiwan Complex instead. An entertainment centre located in a park in downtown Tirana, it is home to restaurants, bars, a casino, a bowling alley, and many other attractions. If the sun is shining, it is a wonderful place to be. Those looking to chill or seek out a great dinner will enjoy having a coffee or a meal on Murat Toptani Street. A pedestrian only street in the car dominated core, the relaxing atmosphere has given rise to some of this city's trendiest spots, so be sure to walk through here first when looking for a place to eat. Once the sun sets, don't forget to sample the nightlife in Tirana. Radio Bar is a good spot to start the night, as its quieter yet hip atmosphere makes it easy to meet locals, who tend to be university students at this venue. When the time comes to rock out for the rest of the night, Alfa Bar is an awesome place to go, as it stays open late, and often host great local bands.

“Watt’s World” - Nick Watt Finds a Statue of President George W. Bush in an Albanian Town Square
Host Nick Watt heads to Albania where there are no traffic laws, there are 27 words for mustache, a woman can live as a man and a hip hop artist has become prime minister. Watt even appears as a special guest on a TV show because they think he is American. “Why is Albania so weird,” asks Watt as he heads south to the “Albanian Riviera” to fulfill his childhood dream of seeing the tiny mushroom-shaped bunkers that stand as a monument to one man’s paranoia. On his way, he makes a pit stop and discovers one of Albania’s more charming idiosyncrasies: the residents love America and President George W. Bush. In Fushe-Kruje, a giant statue of Bush was erected in the town square to commemorate the first visit by a U.S. president to the country after the fall of communism. The following day, Watt meets Diana, one of Albania’s few remaining “sworn virgins,” a woman who takes a vow to be a man and is legally and socially recognized as a man from then on, as long as they remain celibate. Watt continues his journey around the country, meeting with the prime minister and appearing on Albania’s answer to “The Daily Show” – a late night variety show complete with independent investigative news and dancing girls. Youth Park may be the place where the monument will be placed 100-year anniversary of independence. At least this is the alternative, that the studio prefer winning architects to announcement. As director of the Art Gallery at the same time chairman of the jury, stated that the site of the monument will be determined after a week. Kosovo and the German architect has given details of the monument to the 100-anniversary of independence. We construct its tower symbolizes the one hand, the closure and its printing, while the other opening towards independence. The monument will be 8 meters high and at different angles of observation will provide different views. It is designed to glow at night and over time it has the property of tarnished, while maintaining the color and brightness only in parts affected by visitors.

President and Mrs. Bush head home today after a visit to Bulgaria. Sofia was the last stop on the Bushes European trip which was mostly for the G-8 summit in Germany.

At a welcome ceremony, canons boomed and a military band played the U-S National Anthem. Bush and Bulgaria's president layed a wreath at the monument to the unknown soldier and shook hands with Bulgaria's veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Just before Bulgaria -- Bush stopped in Albania. There he got an extremely warm and physical welcome. Albanians were pleased to hear Bush support Kosovo independence. Kosovo has a high ethnic Albanian population.

The Bulgarians hope to get U-S help freeing five Bulgarian nurses in jail in Libya. Libyans accuse them of deliberately infecting children with H-I-V and have sentenced the nurses to death.

ALBANIA: TIRANA: FUNERAL OF KOSOVO DEFENCE MINISTER KRASNIQI

Hundreds of people have gathered to honour the defence minister of the Kosovo government-in-exile, who was shot dead in the Albanian capital earlier this week.
Fifty year old Ahmed Krasniqi was found dead late on Monday in a narrow residential street in the Albanian capital, Tirana.
Three empty cartridges lay on the road nearby.
No arrests have been made and the motive was unclear.
Ahmed Krasniqi's coffin was taken to a military building in the Albanian capital, Tirana before being laid to rest.
The fifty year old Krasniqi was the defence minister of the Kosovo government-in-exile.
He was found dead late on Monday on a narrow residential street in the Tirana.
Three empty cartridges were found near his body.
Krasniqi was responsible for organising paramilitary forces which would parallel the Kosovo Liberation Army.
For security reasons, his identity was withheld until his death.
The military paid their respects along with members of Ahmed Krasniqi's family.
Addressing 1-thousand Kosovo Albanians at a memorial ceremony in the National Museum in downtown Tirana, the exiled government's minister of education Muhamed Bicaj praised Krasniqi.
He said Krasniqi was figurehead for the ethnic Albanians fighting for independence from Serbia.
Albania has been drawn to the edge of the conflict on its northern border with Kosovo, where guerrillas have supply bases.
Albania recognised Kosovo as a republic in 1991 and has allowed a representative embassy in Tirana.
No one has yet been arrested in connection with the murder of Ahmed Krasniqi.

Bill Clinton Statue Unveiled In Kosovo
Thousands of ethnic Albanians braved low temperatures and cold wind in Kosovo's capital city Pristina Sunday for the unveiling of a statue of former President Bill Clinton and to catch a glimpse of the real Bill Clinton who was taking part in ceremonies.
Clinton's 11-foot statue will stand a main boulevard that also bears his name.

I must say, I never expected that anywhere, someone would make such a big statue of me.
Clinton is celebrated as a hero by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority for launching NATO's bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999 that stopped the brutal Serb forces' crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians in which 10-thousand ethnic Albanians were killed and about 800-thousand were forced out of their homes.
This was Clinton's first visit to Kosovo since it declared independence from Serbia last year.
In a speech before Kosovo's 120-seat assembly, Clinton encouraged lawmakers to forgive and move on from the violence of the past.

Clinton waved to the crowd as the red cover was pulled off from the statue to thunderous applause.

TIRANA - Albania Travel Guide | Around The World
Tirana is the capital and most populous city of the Republic of Albania. The city is also the capital of the surrounding county of Tirana, one of 12 constituent counties of the country. By air, it is 501 kilometres (311 miles) north of Athens, 613 kilometres (381 miles) southeast of Rome, 153 kilometres (95 miles) southwest of Skopje and 131 kilometres (81 miles) south of Podgorica.
Tirana was founded as a city in 1614, but the region that today corresponds to the city territory has been continuously inhabited since the Bronze Age. As most of Albania, the area was populated by several Illyrian tribes, but had no importance within Illyria. Indeed, it was annexed by Rome and became an integral part of the Roman Empire following the Illyrian Wars. The heritage of that period is still evident and represented by the Mosaics of Tirana. Further later in the 5th and 6th century, a Paleo Christian basilica was built around this site. When the Roman Empire divided into east and west, its successor the Byzantine Empire took control and included the construction of the Petrelë Castle, under the reign of Justinian I. Until the 20th century, the city did not attain much significance, when the Congress of Lushnjë proclaimed it as the country's capital, after the country's declaration of independence in 1912.
Geographically, Tirana is located in the center of the country surrounded by mountains and hills, with Dajt on the east and a slight valley opening on the northwest, overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Due to its location within the Tirana plain and the close proximity to the Adriatic Sea, the city is influenced by a mediterranean seasonal climate. It is the 3rd wettest and 8th sunniest city in Europe, with 2,544 hours of sun per year.
Being a primate city, Tirana is considered the economic and cultural hub of Albania, due to its significant location and importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education, service, research and healthcare. All of the country's largest companies, media and scientific institutions have their headquarters in the city. Tirana is also the seat of power of the Government of Albania, the residences for work of the President and Prime Minister of Albania.
Tourism in Albania is developing year by year since the fall of communism and the capital city of Tirana become a very popular tourist destinations after the southern Albanian Riviera and northern part of the country. Tirana has a majority of luxury hotels, modern restaurants, bars, pubs and very big nightclubs. The largest hotels of the city are the Tirana International Hotel and The Tirana Plaza situated in the heart of the city near the Scanderbeg Square. The luxury Sheraton Hotel Tirana is also located in city center of Tirana, near central business district next to the National Arena. Other major hotels present in central Tirana include the Xheko Imperial Hotel, Rogner Hotel, the Best Western Premier Ark Hotel and the Mondial Hotel. Tirana is a place that is known as a university center of students from regional countries like Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece.

Most tourists to the city come from Greece, Italy, Kosovo and Europe, with the number of visitors from elsewhere growing every year, thanks to an increasing number of international airline arrivals at Mother Teresa International Airport as well as luxury cruises that arrive into the Port of Durrës that offers day trips to the City.
A large number of the monuments located in Tirana, date back to the Illyrian, Roman, Greek and Ottoman periods. Monuments include the Skanderbeg Square, Clock Tower of Tirana, Petrelë Castle, Et'hem Bey Mosque, Sacred Heart Church, Resurrection Cathedral, Tomb of Kapllan Pasha, Mother Albania, Blloku, Mount Dajti and Mosaic of Tirana.
Tirana is an important center for music, film, theatre, dance and visual art. The city is host to the largest cultural institutions of the country, such as the National Theatre and the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the Natioan Archaeological Museum, the Art Gallery of Albania, the Sciences Museum of Albania and the National Historical Museum. Among the local institutions are the National Library, that keeps more than a million books, periodicals, maps, atlases, microfilms and other library materials. The city has five well-preserved traditional houses (museum-houses), 56 cultural monuments, eight public libraries. Since 2011, a Tourist Information Office was opened, located behind the National Historical Museum, with useful information about Tirana and Albania.
