Independence square Minsk in the centre of Belarus - Episode 8 - Ch 2
The area of Independence Square (before 1991, Lenin Square (late 19th - early 20th c)) is in the center of Minsk. The only building survived from the beginning is the Red Church.
The ensemble of the square now includes the House of Government, the Minsk Executive Committee, Belarusian State Pedagogical University and Belarusian State University, famous Red church - Roman-Catholic church of Saint Simeon and Elena, hotel “Minsk” and huge central post office. Coming out beautiful glass domes are the parts of big underground shopping centre Stalitsa (it works from 10.00 to 22.00 every day, holds performances sometimes and offers a lot of Belarusian shops as well as international brands).
In the centre of the square there is a nice fountain which has symbol of Belarus - Stork Birds on top and emblems of 6 major cities. This is a very famous tourist attraction and good recreation point in Minsk.

Minsk: Komarovsky market, Central departmental store, Independence Square, The Red Church (Part 2)
Minsk is the capital of Belarus and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It had a population of 2 million.
The earliest historical references to Minsk date to the 11th century (1067), when it was noted as a provincial city within the Principality of Polotsk. In 1242, Minsk became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It received town privileges in 1499. In 1793 the city became part of the Russian Empire. From 1919 to 1991, after the Russian Revolution, Minsk was the capital of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, in the Soviet Union.

A walk along Independence Avenue in Minsk at night, Belarus, from Kalinin Square to Yakub Kolas Square.
Spacious clean streets, order, closed shops, bars and cafes, minimum people. Utilities go out to clean up. You can see runners somewhere, but there are very few.
Minsk is a quiet and peaceful city. After 9 pm the streets are very empty. Even on the central avenue it's not crowded. However, many nightclubs located on the avenue attract a significant number of people.
There are several 24-hour shops on Independence Avenue, but they are quite far from the centre.

The Yakub Kolas Square (Belarusian: Плошча Якуба Коласа - Plošča Jakuba Kolasa) is a square in Pershamayski District of Minsk, is located on crossing of Independence Avenue, Yakub Kolas street and Vera Khoruzhaya street. The square was named in honour of the folk poet and one of the founders of the classic Belarusian literature - Yakub Kolas. Lush greenery and fountains make this square an attractive landmark on a hot summer day for nearby workers, shoppers and city tourists. Walking around Minsk - 2017
Visiting Minsk in July 2017. It's a truly amazing place, clean and peaceful. While parts of it reminds you of the Sovjet times, it it astonishing how much is new. The city is developing quickly with construction projects being visible everywhere. Compared to Kiev, things in Minsk are a lot more in order. It seems that the whole city is functionning like a Swiss watch. Traffic is running smoothly and there is no visible crime. Also economically Belarus is better off than it's neighbor Ukraine. GDP per capita is 6200 USD and official unemployment is just 1%.
Belarus introduced visa-free travel for up to 5 days for citizens of many countries. Still, I did only spot very few foreigners. I do recommend visiting this great country and amazing city.
