Travelogue - Jaipur, India
This is my travelogue of Jaipur(जयपुर)
I have been to Jaipur 4 times till date and I think it's one of the Most beautiful places in the world
This video was part of my Avid Editing assignment for my school.
- parag sankhe
Jaipur (Rajasthani: जैपर Hindi: जयपुर) [ˈdʒəjpʊɾ] , also popularly known as the 'Pink City', is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, the city today has a population of more than 3.1 million.
Jaipur is one of the finest planned cities of India, located in the semi-desert lands of Rajasthan. The city which once had been the capital of the royalty now is the capital city of Rajasthan. The very structure of Jaipur resembles the taste of the Rajputs and the Royal families. At present, Jaipur is a major business centre with all requisites of a metropolitan city.
Jaipur has some big and famous areas in India like Mansarovar, Vaishali Nagar, Sanganer, Jhotwada,Amba-Bari, Raja Park etc.
The city is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets which are laid out into six sectors separated by broad streets 111 ft (34 m) wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east. The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex, (Hawa Mahal), formal gardens, and a small lake. Nahargarh Fort, which was the residence of the King Sawai Jai Singh II, crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city. The observatory, Jantar Mantar, is one of the World Heritage Sites. Jaipur is a popular tourist destination in Rajasthan and India.
In 1876 Jaipur was colored in terracotta pink to welcome Prince Albert, and thus the name Pink City was attached with the city.

Travel Jaipur, India - Turban Museum
Learn about Turbans' history, uses, and types in western India's state of Rajasthan.
Turbans' are worn around the world. They can indicate social status, religious preference, occupation or the mood of a person. In the western part of Jaipur India turbans' are a regular attire for traditional wear. Here in the Turban museum you can see the role of turban in Rajasthani culture. All kinds of turbans displayed over here to show how they are used in the daily lifes of rajastani people.
This is suposedly one of the largest collections in the India and maybe in the world. This is a collection which took me many years to put together. The material was bought wholesale. White in color. Then we would go to different villages in Rajasthan. We would have it colored and dyed there. Then the local expert would dye it according to the style and then this would be put into a box and brought here. In fact, some of the turbans are very sensitive and the person who had it dyed he would have to put it on his head and bring it, because otherwise it would unwrap.
Different colors can be common during seasons. White and red typically worn during the spring. Bright colors are worn during weddings and other happy occassions. So when wearing a turban make sure you have got the right color. We have different types of turbans'. These are wedding turbans of different communities. That is Muslim. This is a snake charmer. This is a Maheshwari, a businessman that is a rajput from Udaipur. Turbans, I may also explain, come in two categories. Pag, which is 22 meters. Which is worn, takes 2 to 3 hours to tie, and you can wear it like a cap till the cloth gets dirty, maybe two months or three months. This is a pag, six inches wide. It is worn like a, folded like a bandage.
This is a safa which is 10 meters, 9 to 10 meters. And this is worn more less every second day or third day. It takes maybe, an expert can tie it in 2 minutes or three minutes. Turbans are also used for pulling up water like a rope from a well. It is also used for tieing a cow or a goat. These are rare turbans. We heard of only one person who could tie it. This is from Nagor district, so it is called Nagora Pag. This one is 44 meters, it is the longest. Tieing a turban is an art in itself. For those who are good at it can take part in the competitions all over. This is Subashish Bharuka showing you Jaipur.

Jantar Mantar - The Jaipur Observatory in India
The Jantar Mantar is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments, built by Sawai Jai Singh who was a Rajput king. The title of (King) and Sawai was bestowed on him by Emperor Mohammad Shah. Jai Singh II of Amber built his new capital of Jaipur between 1727 and 1734. It is also located in Ujjain and Mathura.
It is modeled after the one that he had built at the Mughal capital of Delhi. He had constructed a total of five such facilities at different locations, including the ones at Delhi and Jaipur. The Jaipur observatory is the largest and best preserved of these. It has been inscribed on the World Heritage List as an expression of the astronomical skills and cosmological concepts of the court of a scholarly prince at the end of the Mughal period. Early restoration work was undertaken under the supervision of Major Arthur Garrett, a keen amateur astronomer, during his appointment as Assistant State Engineer for the Jaipur District. The Jantar Mantar was made by Sawai Jai Singh as he was particularly interested in learning about the sky above his head.
The observatory consists of fourteen major geometric devices for measuring time, predicting eclipses, tracking stars' location as the earth orbits around the sun, ascertaining the declinations of planets, and determining the celestial altitudes and related ephemerides. Each is a fixed and 'focused' tool. The Samrat Yantra, the largest instrument, is 90 feet (27 m) high, its shadow carefully plotted to tell the time of day. Its face is angled at 27 degrees, the latitude of Jaipur. The Hindu chhatri (small cupola) on top is used as a platform for announcing eclipses and the arrival of monsoons.
Built from local stone and marble, each instrument carries an astronomical scale, generally marked on the marble inner lining. Bronze tablets, all extraordinarily accurate, were also employed. Thoroughly restored in 1901, the Jantar Mantar was declared a national monument in 1948.
An excursion through Jai Singh's Jantar is a unique experience of walking through solid geometry and encountering a collective astronomical system designed to probe the heavens.
The instruments are in most cases huge structures. The scale to which they have been built has been alleged to increase their accuracy. However, the penumbra of the sun can be as wide as 30 mm, making the 1mm increments of the Samrat Yantra sundial devoid of any practical significance. Additionally, the masons constructing the instruments had insufficient experience with construction of this scale, and subsidence of the foundations has subsequently misaligned them. The samrat yantra, for instance, which is a sundial, can be used to tell the time to an accuracy of about two seconds in Jaipur local time. The Giant Sundial, known as the Samrat Yantra (The Supreme Instrument) is the world's largest sundial, standing 27 meters tall. Its shadow moves visibly at 1 mm per second, or roughly a hand's breadth (6 cm) every minute, which can be a profound experience.
To this day, the observatory is used by astronomers, for instance to calculate the auspicious date for weddings. Students of astronomy and Vedic astrology (Jyotish) are required to take lessons at the observatory, and it can be said that the observatory is the single most representative work of Vedic thought that still survives, apart from the scriptures.

Answering a hard question: How was India?
In a land of sensory overload I’ve seen, heard, touched, tasted, and smelled more than I ever thought possible. Honestly, words fail me. So, this is my attempt to answer that question, with footage that I captured while on an epic tour of India last month. I hope that you enjoy!

Words:
The world has enough technology now
If it’s old prejudices and stupidity can be dropped
We can make the whole world a paradise, nothing is lacking
If we can reach to the moon
If we can create so much destructive power
The same power can be transferred into creativity.
You are a guest
Leave this Earth, a little more beautiful
For those unknown guests who will be following you
Nobody belongs here
But for the moment we are here
And we have to make this moment as beautiful as possible.
Wherever you are, it will be here and now
Live as intensely and totally now
Otherwise, life goes on slipping from your hands like water
Soon you will have empty hands
And meeting death with empty hands, is an utter failure.

Hawa Mahal (translation: Palace of Winds), is a palace in Jaipur, India. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, and designed by Lal Chand Usta in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. It forms part of the City Palace and extends the Zenana or women's chambers, the chambers of the harem. Its original intention was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen.
It has five stories and is constructed of red and pink sandstone, highlighted with white quakeee quick lime. The side facing the street outside the palace complex has 953 small windows, and the breeze (hawa) which circulates through these windows gives the palace its name, and keeps it cool even in hot months.
The entrance opens onto a courtyard with a double-storied building on three sides, and one on the eastern wing with three more stories, which is just one room wide. There are no stairs to reach the upper floors, only ramps.
AMER FORT and AMER PALACE RAJASTHAN + goats! | Jaipur, India, Travel Vlog
Michael spends the full day exploring Jaipur's famous sites of Amber Fort and Amber Palace. Sometimes, these are called Amer Fort and Amer Palace. These are consider one of the most popular things to do in Jaipur and receive millions of visitors per year.
Tons of walking!
The best way to get to Amer Fort is by Uber, and it's a pretty cheap ride that shouldn't cost you any more than around 410 Rupees or about $6-7 USD.
A couple of things to remember:
1. To get into the fort at the top costs extra. It's cheap, but just something you should consider!
2. If you want to record video, you are not allowed to use a microphone. That was odd, but it might have just been that mine was big and poofy! If you use one, keep it small.
3. Wear sunscreen.
4. Prepare to walk - uphill! Amber Fort has some steep spots!

History[edit]
Main article: History of Jaipur
Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur
The city of Jaipur was founded in 1726 by Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amer who ruled from 1688 to 1758. He planned to shift his capital from Amer, 11 km (7 miles) from Jaipur to accommodate the growing population and increasing scarcity of water.[5] Jai Singh consulted several books on architecture and architects while planning the layout of Jaipur. Under the architectural guidance of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, Jaipur was planned based on the principles of Vastu shastra and Shilpa Shastra.[8] The construction of the city began in 1726 and took four years to complete the major roads, offices and palaces. The city was divided into nine blocks, two of which contained the state buildings and palaces, with the remaining seven allotted to the public. Huge ramparts were built, pierced by seven fortified gates.[5]
During the rule of Sawai Ram Singh, the city was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, in 1876.[9] Many of the avenues remained painted in pink, giving Jaipur a distinctive appearance and the epithet Pink city.[10] In the 19th century, the city grew rapidly and by 1900 it had a population of 160,000. The wide boulevards were paved and its chief industries were the working of metals and marble, fostered by a school of art founded in 1868. The city had three colleges, including a Sanskrit college (1865) and a girls' school (1867) opened during the reign of the Maharaja Ram Singh II.[11][12]
Architecture[edit]
Vidhan Sabha in Jaipur
Amer Fort as seen from Nahargarh fort
The city was planned according to Indian Vastu shastra by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya in 1727.[13] There are three gates facing east, west, and north. The eastern gate is called Suraj pol (sun gate), the western gate is called Chand pol (moon gate) and the northern gate faces the ancestral capital of Amer.[8][14]
The city is unusual among pre-modern Indian cities in the regularity of its streets, and the division of the city into six sectors by broad streets 34 m (111 ft) wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east. The Palace quarter encloses the Hawa Mahal palace complex, formal gardens, and a small lake. Nahargarh Fort, which was the residence of the King Sawai Jai Singh II, crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city.[15]
Demographics[edit]
As of 2011, Jaipur had a population of 3,073,350.[16] According to census of 2011. Hindus comprise 77.9% of the city's population, Muslim 18.6%, Jains 2.4% and others 1.0%.[17] While 47.49% people lived in rural areas, 52.51% lived in urban areas. The overall literacy rate for the district was 76.44%. 87.27% males and 64.63% females were literate. The sex ratio was 898 females per 1,000
