Indian Head is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,844 at the 2010 U.S. Census. It has been the site of a naval base specializing in gun and rocket propellants since 1890. Production of nitrocellulose and smokeless powder began at the Indian Head Powder Factory in 1900. The name of the base has varied over the years from Indian Head Proving Ground, to Naval Powder Factory, to Naval Propellant Plant, to Naval Ordnance Station, to the present Naval Support Facility Indian Head. The facility's main tenant activity is the Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center . Advanced research in energetic systems takes place at NSWC/IH. NSWC/IH absorbed the function of the closed Naval Ordnance Laboratory, formerly in White Oak, Maryland. The base currently employs 3,700 people.

Easy cruise on my Bianchi 928 Carbon Mono-Q - My Action Camera battery died so I missed a portion of this trip and distance displayed is incorrect. This has become a repeat problem so I have identified four bad batteries and disposed of them. Future videos should be uninterrupted. (There was also a pause and distance reset while stopping to take a phone call)

Southern Maryland Century - Indian Head, Maryland

The Indian Head 100 starts from the Village Green in Indian Head, just 20 miles south of the Washington Beltway. Enjoy a 100 miles of scenic, lightly traveled roads in Southern Maryland. Shorter route options are 16, 29 and 63 miles. The event is fully supported with road markings, map and cue sheet, well-stocked rest stops, SAG support, and includes an after-ride picnic. Proceeds benefit local organizations and the new Indian Head Rail Trail.

Indian Head Rail Trail Ride

While on a 93 mile bike ride through Waldorf and Charles County, MD, I decided to ride the length of the Indian Head Rail Trail. It is a 13 mile rail trail that opened in 2008.

The trail itself (being a rail trail) is very flat, going slightly downhill as you get closer to Indian Head, although it was balanced by a westerly wind when I rode it. The trail passes through the Mattawoman Creek stream valley and is quite peaceful. I even have a couple of moments of just the sounds of nature in the video to emphasize this.

I enjoyed riding on the trail and recommend it if you are in the area. Of course, it helps when you're closer than the 30 miles it took me to get there from my apartment in Arlington, VA!
