Anamalai Tiger Reserve, earlier known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park (IGWLS&NP) and previously as Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected area located in the Anaimalai Hills of Pollachi, Valparai and Udumalpet taluks of Coimbatore District and Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu state, South India. The Tamil Nadu Environment and Forests Department by a notification dated 27 June 2007, declared an extent of 958.59 km2 that encompassed the erstwhile IGWLS&NP or Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, as Anamalai Tiger Reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the Reserve presently includes a core area of 958.59 km2 and buffer/peripheral area of 521.28 km2 forming a total area of 1479.87 km2.

Valparai is a mid-elevation hill station (Ootacamund is considerably higher). The tea plantations are surrounded by evergreen forest. The region is also a rich elephant tract and is known to have many leopards. The drive to the town from Pollachi passes through the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary noted for elephants, boars, lion-tailed macaques, gaur, spotted deer, sambar, and giant squirrels. The area is also rich in birds, including the great hornbill. Water bodies at Monkey Falls and Aliyar Dam are also seen en route. Valparai receives among the highest rainfall in the region during the monsoons (around June).
The Valparai range is also habitat to the Nilgiri tahr, an endemic wild ungulate. These mountain goats inhabit the high ranges and prefer open terrain, cliffs and grass-covered hills, a habitat largely confined to altitudes from 1200 to 2600m in the southern Western Ghats. Their territory extended far and wide all along these hills in the past, but, because of hunting and large-scale habitat destruction, they now exist only in a few isolated sites like the Anaimalai Hills. The human-elephant conflict here is a delicate issue. The tea plantations are a hindrance to the movement of wildlife, particularly elephants who walk large distances to reach water bodies and feeding areas.

A CALL IN THE RAINFOREST - Preview
Never heard before call of a Lion Tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus). This is the opening one minute sequence of my film A Call in the Rainforest. This movie is shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV at 1080p at 24p.
The movie is 18 and half minute long. It has been screened in Haida Gwaii Film Festival, Canada on 26th Feb 2012 and Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival, Pune, India on 25th Feb 2012.
The film A Call in the Rainforest was awarded the 2nd Prize in the Aapala Paryavaran Film Festival organised by Maharashtra Government Environment Department and Maharastra Pollution Control Board, Mumbai, India. The award was given by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Prithiviraj Chavan and Dy. Chief Minister of Maharastra State, Mr. Ajit Pawar on 5th June, 2012.
The Lion-tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus) is an endangered species according to the IUCN Redlist. It is endemic to the wet evergreen forests of the western ghats. The total number of mature Lion-tailed macaques is estimated to be less than 2500 and no sub-population in an area has more than 250 mature individuals. The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary holds the largest population of the Lion-tailed Macaques.
The fragmentation of habitat, due to tea estates, human habitations and clear felling of trees has led to very small groups with often only one mature male. This leads to reduction in genetic diversity and increases their susceptibility to diseases.
Lion-tailed Macaques cannot digest leaves and depend on fruits, berries and insects provided by the rainforests. The clear felling of trees to make way for plantations and fuel wood has resulted in lack of fruits, berries etc in major parts of the year. This has led them to scavenge for their food requirements.
This film documents and examines the impact of tea-plantations, rapid growth of Valparai town, and its associated ills like boom in tourism, expansion of roads through the forest on one Lion-tailed Macaque sub-population in the Valparai Range of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary.

Rhesus macaques are native to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Burma, Thailand, Afghanistan, Vietnam, southern China, and some neighboring areas. They have the widest geographic ranges of any nonhuman primate, occupying a great diversity of altitudes throughout Central, South, and Southeast Asia. Inhabiting arid, open areas, rhesus macaques may be found in grasslands, woodlands, and in mountainous regions up to 2,500 m (8,200 ft) in elevation. They are regular swimmers. Babies as young as a few days old can swim, and adults are known to swim over a half mile between islands, but are often found drowned in small groups where their drinking waters lie. Rhesus macaques are noted for their tendency to move from rural to urban areas, coming to rely on handouts or refuse from humans. They adapt well to human presence, and form larger troops in human-dominated landscapes than in forests.
The southern and the northern distributional limits for rhesus and bonnet macaques, respectively, currently run parallel to each other in the western part of India, are separated by a large gap in the center, and converge on the eastern coast of the peninsula to form a distribution overlap zone. This overlap region is characterized by the presence of mixed-species troops, with pure troops of both species sometimes occurring even in close proximity to one another. The range extension of rhesus macaque – a natural process in some areas, and a direct consequence of introduction by humans in other regions – poses grave implications for the endemic and declining populations of bonnet macaques in southern India.
CHINNAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS) is located 18 km north of Marayoor on SH 17 in the Marayoor and Kanthalloor panchayats of Devikulam taluk in the Idukki district of Kerala state in South India. It is one of twelve wildlife sanctuaries among the protected areas of Kerala.
Elephants Found While Passing Mountains
In the eastern parts of the high ranges of southern Western Ghats lies Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. The south side of the sanctuary is covered by Eravikulam National park and the north side is by Indira Gandhi wildlife sanctuary.
The 90 km sq sanctuary is unique with its floral, ecological, geomorphologic and cultural significance. Chinnar is a unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species. This sanctuary is one among the 12 protected areas of Kerala.
An ideal place for trekking, Chinnar is located in the rain shadow region of Western Ghats and receives very less amount of rainfall every year. Due to this extensive variation of rainfall, Chinnar is blessed with a wide array of habitat types like deciduous forests, dry thorn scrub, riparian forest, shoals and grasslands. There is an extensive sandlewood forest nearby the sanctuary, which is an added attraction.
Chinnar has about 1000 species of flowering plants and a wide variety of medicinal plants. You can sight here 225 recorded species of birds and also the endangered species of Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India. Other important mammals that you can see here are elephant, tiger, leopard, guar, sambar, spotted deer, Nilgiri Tahr etc.
Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is famous for its eco-tourism activities, jointly organized by Forest Department and the Eco development Committees of the local tribal communities. The eco-tourism facilities include river trekking, trekking to the cultural site, nature trail to the watch tower, a trek to the Thoovanam falls, interpretation activities and medicinal garden, tree house at Chinnar, trekking and camping at Vasyappara.
Chinnar is around 60 km away from Munnar and the nearest town is Marayur, which is around 16 km away from the sanctuary. You can make a visit to Marayur, which is the land of natural sandlewood and also dolmens (ancient burial chambers) and local sharkara (yellow sugar) making units.

Valparai (originally known as Poonachimalai) is a Taluk and hill station in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, India. It consists of Anamalai Tiger Reserve (earlier known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park (IGWLS&NP) and prior to that as Anaimalai Wildlife Sanctuary). It is located 4,500 feet (1,400 m) above sea level on the Anaimalai Hills range of the Western Ghats. The foothill starts exactly from Monkey Falls which is at a distance of 38 kilometres (24 mi) to Valparai. The route to Valparai from the foothills consists of 40 hairpin bends. The Kerala state border town of Malakkappara is at a distance of 26 miles from Valparai. While major portions of the land are owned by private tea companies, large forest areas continue to be out of bounds.[2]

Aliyar (ஆழியாறு) (also spelt Azhiyar / Aaliyar) Reservoir is a 6.48 km2 (2.5 sq mi) reservoir located in Aliyar village near Pollachi town in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu, South India. The dam is located in the foothills of Valparai, in the Anaimalai Hills of the Western Ghats.[3] It is about 65 kilometres (40 mi) from Coimbatore. The dam offers some ideal getaways including a park, garden, aquarium, play area and a mini Theme-Park maintained by Tamil Nadu Fisheries Corporation for visitors enjoyment. The scenery is beautiful, with mountains surrounding three quarters of the reservoir. Boating is also available.[4]
