1. Philippine Embassy in Brussels – official name is the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Mission of the Philippines to the European Union. It was established on 1964, the same year that diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Belgium started on July 4th. Since its establishment, 12 ambassadors have served as the head of post. Ambassador Victoria S. Bataclan is the country’s envoy to the said post since 10 October 2011.
2. European Commission Headquarters – the European Union’s (EU) executive body representing the interest of Europe as a whole (as opposed to the interests of individual countries). Its main roles are to set objectives and priorities for action; propose legislation to Parliament and Council; manage and implement EU policies and the budget; enforce European law jointly with the Court of Justice; and, represent the EU outside Europe such as negotiating trade agreements between the EU and other countries, etc. (source:
3. European Council Headquarters -- a summit of heads of state of member countries. Held four times a year in Brussels and attended by two representatives from each country, the meetings receive a lot of publicity from press. They are chaired by the presiding President of the Council at the time and outcomes of this meeting steer the direction for future laws and policy drafts (source:
4. Royal Palace – a highlight of Neo-Classical architecture and is the official home of His Majesty the King who is Belgium’s Head of State
5. Academy Palace – one of the last examples of pure classical architecture in Belgium during the 19th century. It was built to serve as the Brussels residence of Prince William of Orange, the heir to the Dutch home. Today, it is the seat of the following: ARB -- The Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium; KVAB – The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts; ARMB – The French Language Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium; KAGB – The Dutch Language Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium; and, ARLLF – The Royal Academy of French Language and Literature
6. Infantry Memorial – a monument dedicated to the memory of Belgian soldiers who took part in World Wars I and II. It represents a symbolic column and a number of soldiers at its foot
7. Palace of Justice – a grand structure that stands at the top of Brussels, offering a great panoramic view of the city. The building has a distinctive golden dome and many columns decorating its façade. It still serves its original purpose as the high courts of Brussels
8. Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula – seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Malines-Brussels. The cathedral is the national church of Belgium where royal weddings and funerals take place. Though dating back to the 12th century, the church was granted cathedral status in 1962. Its interior is not as decorative as one would expect from a Gothic architecture but Victor Hugo described it as the “purest flowering of the Gothic style”
9. Mannekin Pis – referred to as the Peeing Boy, this tiny bronze fountain stature stands at 61 cm (24 inches). The locals have so many stories and ways of celebrating festivals with the peeing boy that it even has an outfit for every occasion
10. Atomium Brussels – created in 1958 for the Brussels World’s Fair, it is a replica of a single unit of iron crystal blown up to 165 billion times. Standing at 102 meters, each sphere is 18 meters in diameter. There are nine spheres in total connected up by tubes.

The City of Brussels is the largest municipality of the Brussels-Capital Region, and the de jure capital of Belgium.

to get some footage of the various memorial sites
in the city of Brussels.

BELGIUM: BRUSSELS: WORLD WAR II TRAITOR - COURT VERDICT

A Belgian court has ruled that Irma Laplasse, who was executed for betraying the resistance in the Second World War, should have been given a life sentence instead.
Laplasse was accused of leading the Nazis to a resistance hideout, deliberately sending seven resistance fighters to their death.
But the court ruled that although she committed treason, she may not have been the only one to tell the Germans of the hideout.
Farmer's wife Irma Laplasse was executed in 1945 for betraying the Belgian resistance during the Second World War.
On Wednesday, a military tribunal in Brussels ruled that Laplasse was guilty of treason.
But it found that it could not be proven that she alone informed the Germans of the resistance fighters' hideout.
It concluded that Laplasse, who was executed on 30 May 1945 at the age of 41, should have been given a life sentence instead.
The trial has highlighted lingering hatreds from the German occupation and the subsequent wave of trials of alleged collaborators.
Laplasse's children always maintained their mother had been given an unfair trial and should be rehabilitated.
But resistance groups were angered by the case, saying it was an attempt to white wash history.
For them, the court's decision was the correct one.

Irma Laplasse was accused of telling the Nazis of a resistance hideout after resistance fighters captured some two dozen Germans and informants, including her son.
A German unit attacked the hideout, killing one fighter and later executing six others.
Laplasse's son survived.
For some Belgians, she was a mother simply protecting her son.
For others, she embodied the evil of Nazi collaboration.

Troops of the 82nd Reconnaissance Battalion, U.S. 2nd Armored Division, pass in review before their Commanding General, Brigadier General Isaac White, who stands on a stage with Belgian officials, in the town of Hasselt, Belgium during World War 2. The troops are led by the 66th Armored Regiment military band. A contingent of the marchers carries numerous American flags. Civilian spectators line the sidewalks, and Belgian officials in formal dress with medals, watch the parade which ends at a World War I memorial monument in the square. General White carries wreath of flowers and places them at the foot of the memorial, which is inscribed: 1914 - 1918. The U.S. troops parade from the scene. Group of children applaud. Memorials of Sikh Soldiers in Belgium.
June 2012 : British Sikhs remember soldiers from World War I at Memorial sites in Belgium
A UK delegation of British Sikhs from the West Midlands visited Belgium to pay tributes to soldiers who were killed in World War I. The quartet consisting of Mr Dal Singh Dhesy, Mr Gurbachan Singh Jammu, Mr Gurdev Singh Manku -- Honorary Alderman Birmingham City and Mrs Baldev Kaur Manku, from the Sikh Community and Youth Service UK, in Handsworth, Birmingham who are also members of the Royal British Legion and the UK Labour party, paid their respects to the missing and those killed in action by participating in the Last Post ceremony that took place at Menin Gate. They also laid a wreath from the Sikh community, to honour the fallen.

The tributes were paid at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing, which is a war memorial based in Ypres, Belgium and is dedicated to the commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I, and whose graves are unknown. Following the opening of the Menin Gate Memorial in 1927, the citizens of Ypres wanted to express their gratitude towards those who had given their lives for Belgium's freedom. As such, every evening at 20:00 hours, buglers from the local fire brigade close the road which passes under the Memorial and sound the Last Post. Over 54,896 names including those of Sikh soldiers who fought for the British Indian Army, are engraved on the walls.
The Last Post Ceremony has become part of daily life in Ypres and the local people are proud of this simple but moving tribute, to the courage and self-sacrifice of those who fell in defence of their country.
A remembrance wreath was also laid at Bedford House Cemetery in Ypres where some Sikh soldiers are buried and the Memorial in the Hollebeke village where the Sikh soldiers were first posted in this region. It should be noted that pure Sikh Regiments of 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, 47th Sikhs, 34th Sikh Pioneers and mixed Regiments like 9th Bhopal Infantry, 57th Wilde's Rifles and others have fought in Belgium twice in October 1914 and April 1915. It is believed that nearly 4 thousand Sikhs have died in and around Ypres although the Commonwealth War Grave Commission has recorded only 493 British Indian soldiers. According to Historical records, Indian Corps had lost 34,252 men dead, wounded or prisoners of war ) in 14 months on the western front ( France - Belgium ) and on 27th April 1915, out of 444 men of 47th Sikhs, 348 did not come back, however the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres has the names of only 15 Sikhs of the 47th Sikhs. Between 24th April and 1st of May 1915, the Lahore Sikh Division had lost 3889 men or 30 % of the troops it had employed.
