Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́рг ), Russian pronunciation: [sankt pʲɪtʲɪrˈburk]) is a city and a federal subject (a federal city) of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city's other names were Petrograd (, 1914-1924) and Leningrad (1924-1991). It is often called just Petersburg (Петербу́рг) and is informally known as Piter (Пи́тер).
Founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia on 27 May, 1703, it was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (17131728, 17321918). Saint Petersburg ceased being the capital in 1918 after the Russian Revolution of 1917.[8] It is Russia's second largest city after Moscow with 4.6 million inhabitants, and over 6 million people live in its vicinity. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural centre, and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea.
Saint Petersburg is often described as the most Western city of Russia.[9] Among cities of the world with over one million people, Saint Petersburg is the northernmost. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Russia's political and cultural centre for 200 years, the city is sometimes referred to in Russia as the northern capital. A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other businesses are located in Saint Petersburg
Russia: Putin welcomes French presidential couple in St. Petersburg
Russian President Vladimir Putin presented the French First Lady Brigitte Macron with a bouquet of flowers as she and her husband President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the Konstantin Palace in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
The Russian leader gave the French presidential couple a tour of the estate, a former royal summer retreat whose gardens open out onto the Baltic Sea.
On Friday both leaders will attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
Held annually since 1997, and under the auspices of the Russian president since 2005, SPIEF is a leading business event for the global economic sector. The forum brings together the heads of international organisations, well-known public figures, leading academics, experts and the media.

St. Petersburg
The cultural capital of Russia, northern Venice, the brainchild of Peter - so often called St. Petersburg, the second largest city of our immense with a population of 4.8 million people. Few cities in the world can boast so many attractions, museum collections, opera and drama theaters, manors and palaces, parks and monuments. The literary and musical heritage of Peter is no less outstanding - the number of writers, poets and composers who inspired their misty shores on his misty shocks is stunning even in the wildest imagination. Along with Paris, Rome and Venice, St. Petersburg is included in the UNESCO List as a city in which the entire historical center is taken under patronage. Among other things, there are temples of 42 denominations, including an amazing mosque with a porcelain dome, a Buddhist monastery and one of the most beautiful chapels of the Maltese Order.
And St. Petersburg is the “city of bridges”. 68 rivers, canals and channels cross the city in different directions, forming 42 islands on its territory. Now in St. Petersburg and the suburbs, there are 580 bridges, including 20 adjustable bridges.
Nevsky Avenue
Nevsky Prospect - the main street of St. Petersburg, stretching for 4.5 km from the Admiralty to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Crosses the Moyka River (Green Bridge), Griboyedov Canal (Kazan Bridge), Fontanka (Anichkov Bridge). The greatest width is 60 m (at the Gostiny Dvor), the smallest - 25 m (at the Moika).
Nevsky Prospect is only 10 years younger than St. Petersburg. According to the plan of Peter I, this prospect was supposed to connect the Admiralty with the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Empress Anna Ioannovna called the road Nevskoy prospect, Catherine II –Nevsky prospect.
The facades of 240 buildings overlook Nevsky Prospect. The right side (odd) is informally called the shadow, the even side - the sun (a popular place for walking). The section from Vosstaniya Square to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery is also informally called the Staro-Nevsky (partly because in the 1730s an attempt was made to straighten the highway along the current Pottery and Telezhnyaya streets).

A pleasant drive in Saint Petersburg - Приятного путешествия в Петере
Here we have a very nice car ride through the centre of Saint Petersburg! I travelled from the airport to the Baltic sea at Przymorskaya finishing the journey at the Park Inn. I have used as the backing music the title A Pleasant Drive in Saint Petersburg from the James Bond film Goldeneye.
For those that cannot be bothered to watch the full 20 minute film here are the highlights!
Saint Petersburg is located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea.
In Russian literature and informal documents the Saint (Санкт-) is usually omitted, leaving Petersburg. In common parlance Russians may drop -burg (-бург) as well, leaving only Peter (Питер, pronounced as Piter.
Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on 27 May 1703. From 1713 to 1728 and from 1732 to 1918, Saint Petersburg was the capital of Russia. In 1918 the central government bodies moved from Saint Petersburg (then named Petrograd) to Moscow. It is Russia's second largest city after Moscow with 4.6 million inhabitants. A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other businesses are located in Saint Petersburg.
The music comes from the film GoldenEye and was composed by Éric Serra. It was released on 14 November 1995. Serra composed and performed a number of synthesizer tracks, including the version of the James Bond Theme that plays during the gun barrel sequence, while John Altman and David Arch provided the more traditional symphonic music. Serra's score is often criticized by Bond fans, and is considered the farthest departure from a traditional Bond score in the series history. The producers later hired John Altman to provide the music for the tank chase in St. Petersburg. Serra's original track for that sequence can still be found on the soundtrack as A Pleasant Drive In St. Petersburg.

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region and the sites and give a pretty good idea where future films are going to come from! Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

St. Issacs Cathedral St. Petersburg Russia
The dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg and its gilded cupola can be seen glistening from all over the city.
The church was built by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand, to be the main church of the Russian Empire. The cathedral is elaborately decorated - when you enter the cathedral you pass through one of the porticos - the columns are made of single pieces of red granite and weight 80 tons (about 177,770 pounds) each.
Inside the church many of the icons were created using mosaic techniques and the iconostasis (the icon wall that separates the altar from the rest of the church) is decorated with 8 malachite and 2 lapis lazuli columns.
The cathedral, which can accommodate 14,000 worshipers, now serves as a museum and services are held only on significant ecclesiastical holidays.
You can climb up the 300 or so steps to the observation walkway at the base of the cathedral's dome and enjoy the breathtaking views over the city.
As you walk from Saint Issacs to Peter The Great statue you walk along side the beautiful flower beds until you see the most famous statue of Saint Petersgurg of Peter The Great informally Known as the Bronze Horseman, the pedestal is the enormous thunder stone, claimed to be the largest stone ever moved by man (1,250 tons) and the statue Nicholas 1st thats ends this short film.

Great Russian Masters
The Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, informally known as the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts, was founded in 1757 by Ivan Shuvalov under the name Academy of the Three Noblest Arts. Catherine the Great renamed it the Imperial Academy of Arts and commissioned a new building, completed 25 years later in 1789 by the Neva River. The academy promoted the neoclassical style and technique, and sent its promising students to European capitals for further study. Training at the academy was virtually required for artists to make successful careers.
Formally abolished in 1918 after the Russian Revolution, the academy was renamed several times. It established free tuition; students from across the country competed fiercely for its few places annually. In 1947 the national institution was moved to Moscow, and much of its art collection was moved to the Hermitage. The building in Leningrad was devoted to the Ilya Repin Leningrad Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, named in honor of one of Russia's foremost realist artists. Since 1991 it has been called the St. Petersburg Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
