Going Inside the Thrihnukagigur Volcano near Reykjavik Iceland - July 5, 2012
They have opened this tour into the volcano, to the public for a few weeks this summer 2012 only: They will then assess the environmental impact, etc & decide whether it will be put on again. My son Mark (MarkFreeman408 on YouTube), his friend Josh, and filmmakers Marcus & Kelly from Skylight Films ( are here in Iceland on a holiday/filming/adventure trip. We felt privileged to be able to go inside 120 metres / 400' down into a 4,000 year old volcano magma chamber. This is the only place in the world that is offering, or has ever offered this. Previous to this year, only a limited number of scientists were allowed in & spent hours rappelling down by rope .. we went in by a lift, after a 1 hour hike across an ancient lava field. The original volcano exploration in 2011 was featured by National Geographic:

Inside The Volcano Tour - Trailer
Journey towards the centre of the earth ! Inside The Volcano tour, Iceland.
The dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano is a unique natural phenomenon. By setting up the necessary gear and equipment, we’ve created a tour that opens the door to a new world.
It really isn’t that complicated to experience it. All you need is the willingness to do a moderate 45–50 minute hike (to get to the crater) and the guts to descend 120 meters/400 feet to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift.

Inside the Thrihnukagigur Volcano - Reykjavik Iceland
This is the only volcano in the world in which the public is allowed to go in. Only 2,000 people on earth have visited so far and this is a marketing study by a group of explorers to see if more people are interested. Dedicated to my boss who never thought I would ever attempt such an activity.

Take a trip inside the Volcano - Thrihnukagigur Magma Chamber.
It's one of the most remarkable natural phenomenons on the planet.
The dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano is a truly unique natural phenomenon. With the necessary gear and equipment, this tour opens the gates to an almost surreal volcanic realm.
The beauty of the crater mostly consists of the various coloration found inside and its enormous and to some extent intimidating size. To put it in context, the ground space is equivalent to almost three full-sized basketball courts sited next to each other and the height is such that the full sized Statue of Liberty would easily fit into the chamber. So make no mistake – this chamber is colossal!

Into the Volcano: Exploring the magma chamber of Iceland's Thrihnukagigur
This video descends 300 or so feet inside the magma chamber of a dormant volcano near Reykjavik, Iceland. Fantastic colors on the magma chamber's walls result from minerals that were baked by an eruption that happened some 4,000 years ago. Thrihnukagigur is claimed to be the only place on earth where such an experience is possible, as magma chambers are usually plugged with lava or collapse. This video is part of CGEE's growing collection of educational media about land formation through volcanism in Hawaii and Iceland.
Going Inside Thrihnukagigur Volcano near Reykjavik, Iceland - Sep, 07, 2013
Jenn and I, on our first day abroad, went down the Thrihnukagigur volcano in Iceland. This video took me quite a long time to edit given I've actually never worked with this software before and I had over 2 hours of footage! I hope you enjoy!
Iceland Geology #6 - Volcano Warning Near the Blue Lagoon and KEF Airport
Click on CC for full description and check the links below for detailed information but the Reykjanes peninsula is the youngest landmass of Iceland and the last eruption was in the 13th century so this is big news.
Update January 28. 18:00 GMT
Land continues to rise and there was a meeting in Grindavík yesterday to prepare the 3500 villagers to evacuate the area in case of an eruption.. 1500 people are at any given time by the Blue Lagoon and the Svartsengi Power Plant so they would also be evacuated to emergency centres in Keflavík and Kópavogur. There is still an earthquake swarm going on and the biggest one was measured 3.1 at 6km depth yesterday.
Keflavík Airport remains on warning code yellow
It's not possible to say if it's gonna be an eruption there but this might just be the start of process that could take months or years to reach the surface. Or today or tomorrow.
I'm making a more detailed video with areal photographs to explain this better from the Icelandic mentality toward earthquakes and volcanoes. It will be online in the next 24 hrs.
