Michigan State Parks 100: Southeast Michigan's State Parks - Part 1
The state parks in Southeast Michigan are in close proximity to each other. While each has its own character, they offer similar experiences, which is helpful because if one park is busy, you can try another one not too far away. We took a day trip and checked out five state parks. If you're interested in a specific location, here are the time codes:

Ludington State Park Campground in Ludington Michigan is comprised of scenic sand dunes, a shoreline vista, ponds, marshlands and forests. It is situated between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan with several miles of shoreline and beaches on both bodies of water. There are three partial and primitive (no water, electric, or sewer) hookup RV and tent campgrounds; Pines, Cedar and Beechwood. Paved roads and dirt or paved camping pads this popular campground is best suited to RVs under 35″ in length due to narrow roads and cramped access.
A popular summer destination advanced reservations are recommended as is the idea of entering here not expecting peace and solitude. Guests can enjoy the pretty sand beaches on Lake Michigan, tube on the river, hike in the woods, riding bikes on the paved multi-use trail or just enjoy the great outdoors. Located at the end of M 116 driving to the park is a pretty venture passing through scenic Ludington, along sandy dunes and eventually arriving at the state park.
Sites have picnic tables and fire rings. Water spigots are dispersed throughout the grounds. There are a few pull thrus available.

MIDWEST HOLIDAY 1952 TRAVELOGUE FILM CHICAGO LAKE MICHIGAN MISSOURI NEBRASKA WYOMING 62354
This short 1952 travelogue, presented by Standard Oil Company and produced by Wilding Picture Productions, Inc., follows a road trip though the American Midwest by a Chicago reporter back from assignment in Europe. The film opens with a shot of a street and buildings in Chicago, IL, followed by the door to the Editorial Office of a newspaper. The reporter, Dale Bennett, returns from vacation an meets with his editor to discuss his vacation. Bennett drives his station wagon down a highway (02:10). Bennett swims in Lake Michigan, and then he watches beach cars (dune buggies) racing on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. He walks into a woman painting at an easel on the beach. Bennett pulls into a Standard Oil gas station (03:30), where he buys a finished painting from the woman from the beach (Connie). He pulls up on the side of a road where Connie and her father are stranded with their car and trailer. Bennett gives the car a push start, but Connie’s dad leaves the car without putting it in park, and it rolls down the hill and off the road, crashing into a tree. Bennett pulls the trailer with his station wagon, and the trio arrive at Interlochen, MI. Kids play various instruments at a music camp (07:06). Connie and Bennett sit outside the trailer and chat. A bugler plays “Taps” at sunset with the lake in the background (09:18). Next, they visit Spring Mill State Park, IN, where they see an old water wheel. That is followed by a visit to New Salem State Park, IL featuring the restored old log buildings from the days of Abraham Lincoln (10:12). Viewers see a tugboat on the Mississippi River, a bridge taking the trio into Hannibal, MO (11:00) and the childhood home of Mark Twain, the War Memorial in Kansas City, MO and a view of the city’s skyline, the state capitol building in Lincoln, NE (11:47), Boot Hill Cemetery, and the oil derricks of Oklahoma City (12:20). From there, Bennett, Connie, and her father pass Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains next to Colorado Springs, CO. They drive through Rocky Mountain National Park (12:40), and they take in the views from an alpine lake. There is a good panning shot from Trail Ridge Road (13:18). Next, the film goes to Grand Teton National Park, where the rocky peaks loom over what appears to be Jackson Lake (13:40). They arrive at an entrance to Yellowstone National Park (14:48); footage shows Upper Yellowstone Falls, Old Faithful (15:20), and a black bear next to a road. The ride horses at a dude ranch in Montana and fly fish on a river. Viewers see a wheat field in Montana (16:30), as well as several combine harvesters as they drive through the field. The film shows shots of Mount Rushmore (17:03), South Dakota’s Badlands, and another wheat harvest (in North Dakota). The next place they visit is Minnesota’s Itasca State Park (17:43) with its massive pine trees. Kids play at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Viewers see the Mesabi Iron Range where iron ore is mined (18:07), Duluth and its port on Lake Superior, and a scenic overlook from a Wisconsin highway featuring a lake. A boy and his dog push off from a dock in a canoe (19:05). The trio see more sights, including small falls on Wolf River, Wisconsin Dells, and a dairy farm. The film then shows the entrance to the Iowa State Fair (21:18): Connie and Bennett walk around the grounds, ride a Ferris wheel, and watch a livestock show. Bennett pulls his station wagon and Connie’s trailer into her hometown, a small midwestern town. The film cuts back to the newspaper editor’s office, where Bennett shows his editor Connie’s paintings of the Midwest (23:58). The film concludes with a shot of Bennett and Connie at a bandstand performance at a park in Connie’s hometown.

Park Center student knows how to get things done
It's easy to spot Heather MacMurdo in the Park Center High School wind ensemble. The 17-year-old is the band's sole bassoon player, and it's not the only leadership role MacMurdo manages in music.
In marching band and pep band, MacMurdo is the school's drum major.
The drum majors are really in charge, they're the directors at those events, so the kids really look to her as that leader and as the person in charge, said Wade Schroeder, Park Center's band instructor.
MacMurdo's academic accomplishments put her in a league of her own at Park Center. She's a straight A student taking the school's most difficult courses as a candidate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
What she's taken on is incredible and not only with the six rigorous IB classes, but she's also a student athlete, and she's involved in service to the community, she's the real deal, said Mike Cassidy, Park Center's IB diploma coordinator.
I really actually like all my classes, I don't have one that stands out because I'm interested in all these areas, said MacMurdo.
A National Merit semifinalist, MacMurdo learns by doing. She's a three-sport athlete, captain of the Nordic ski and track teams, National Honor Society treasurer, a Yale Book Award winner and highly involved in her church. Participating in four mission trips brought MacMurdo another form of higher learning.
It helps to take your mind off the 'I want, I need,' and focus on what other people need, said MacMurdo about her service work.
And now a little more about being the only bassoon player in the school's wind ensemble, it turns out it isn't even MacMurdo's main instrument.
She was a saxophone player and in a large section and we didn't have any bassoons in the band, and so I kind of put it to her and asked her if she would be willing to learn another instrument, said Schroeder.
MacMurdo is happy to step up and lead, but she says, please just don't compare yourself.
Everyone is different and has a different background and has different strengths, so maybe there's someplace where I'm really good, but there's also someplace where you're really good and where you would standout more than I would, said MacMurdo.
MacMurdo is considering study in chemical engineering next year. Her top choices for higher education are: Berkeley, Stanford, University of Minnesota, Hope College in Holland, Mich., and Iowa State.

This was shot during my last train ride from Kalamazoo to Chicago. I was moved by the way the morning sunlight danced through the trees on the freshly fallen snow, so I decided to capture it with what I had, my MacBook. The window of the train almost seemed weep in response to the passing countryside where I grew up. I immediately thought of the song Half Acre by Hem, which almost could have been written for that morning. The video hardly does the scene justice, but it might give you a sense of the experience.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—part of the National Park system since 1970—is a cocktail of extensive blue skies, verdant trees, white sands, and deep blue freshwater. Situated on Lake Michigan, just a short drive west of Traverse City, these pristine white-sand beaches are an awesome place to go for a hike or to sit around a bonfire watching the sunset. The landscape is as awe-inspiring as it is unexpected.
