How Do You Get a Pet Tiger? | Abandoned Tiger 311 Call Released
As a Texas sanctuary restores a tiger's health and safety, a 311 call transcript reveals how a tipster encountered the caged animal at a run down vacant home in southeast Houston.
On Monday, Houston police investigators came to the home on Avenue J to rescue the large cat. The very next day, the big feline arrived at Cleveland Armory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison.
After the initial call to 311, animal officials responded to the house and said they could smell and hear something inside the house. They used a cell phone to record video of what was inside the home when they spotted the tiger. A judge granted a warrant and they were able to get the tiger out of the garage.
The rescue all began with a call to the 311 help line, which is available as a free service line in the city of Houston. The tipster repeated a request to remain anonymous about the call.
Tens of thousands of freshwater turtles are being harvested in Florida for export to Asia. The state
HEADLINE: Florida considering limiting turtle harvesting
CAPTION: Tens of thousands of freshwater turtles are being harvested in Florida for export to Asia. The state prepares to take public comments on setting permanent limits on turtle hunting in Florida. (Nov. 19)
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
Hunters have been trapping tens of thousands of Florida turtles for export to Asia. That has prompted the state to set restrictions on harvesting, but some wildlife biologists argue the limits don't go far enough.
Biologist Matt Aresco says the state is allowing fishermen to take too many turtles like the Florida softshell.
(SOT: MATT ARESKO/ WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST)
EVEN LOW LEVELS OF HARVEST WOULD BE UNSUSTAINABLE AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE JUST RECOMMENDING ONE PER PERSON PER DAY. TURTLES AS A GROUP ARE NOT A SPECIES THAT CAN BE SUSTAINABLY HARVESTED COMMERCIALLY AND THAT'S OUR BOTTOM LINE.
Aresko says the turtles are often harvested with mile-long lines that include about a thousand baited hooks.
Texas has taken action to prohibit turtle harvesting and that has prompted a lot of commercial hunters to head to Florida.
Last month, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission set a temporary limit of 20 softshell turtles per day for commercially licensed hunters. Individuals can take five per day.
(SOT: ARESKO)
THE INCREASING GLOBAL MARKET DEMAND FOR TURTLE MEAT HAS CAUSED TURTLES TO BECOME ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST ENDANGERED ANIMAL GROUPS AND WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND A PERMANENT END TO THE COMMERCIAL HUNTING OF WILD TURTLES IN FLORIDA.
(SOT: PAT BEHNKE/ FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION)
THERE IS NO THREAT THAT WE CAN SEE AT THIS POINT. WE HAVE SLOWED IT DOWN. WE'VE RESTRICTED IT WHILE WE TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT IT. WE'RE MOVING AS FAST AS WE CAN AND IN APRIL WE WILL BE BRINGING A PLAN TO THE COMMISSION AND THEN IN JUNE THEY WILL VOTE ON IT FINALLY.
Pat Behnke says the commission is closely studying the issue and is moving as fast as it can to come up with the best possible management plan for freshwater turtles by the time the season opens July 31st.

Ikhana Unmanned Science and Research Aircraft System
Its white surfaces in contrast with the deep blue sky, NASA's Ikhana unmanned science and technology development aircraft soars over California's high desert. A Predator B unmanned aerial system has been acquired by NASA's Dryden Flight Re-search Center to support Earth science missions and advanced aeronautical technology development. The aircraft, named Ikhana, will also act as a testbed to develop capabilities and technologies to improve the utility of unmanned aerial systems. NASA obtained the aircraft from the manufacturer, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, in November 2006.
Ikhana is a Native American Choctaw word meaning intelligence, conscious or aware. The name is descriptive of the research goals NASA has established for the aircraft and its re-lated systems.
Representative Experiments and Projects
The aircraft, designed for long-endurance, high-altitude flight, has been modified and instrumented for use in multiple civil research roles.
NASA's Suborbital Science Program within the Science Mission Directorate is Ikhana's primary customer, using the aircraft for Earth science studies. A variety of atmospheric and remote sensing instruments, including duplicates of those sensors on orbiting satellites, can be installed to collect data during flights lasting up to 30 hours. The Suborbital Science Program uses both manned and unmanned aircraft to collect data within the Earth's atmosphere, complementing measurements of the same phenomenon taken from space and those taken on the Earth's surface.
NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate will also use the aircraft for advanced aircraft systems research and technology development. Initial experiments will look into the use of fiber optics for wing shape sensing and control and structural loads measurements. NASA's Ikhana unmanned science aircraft ground control station includes consoles for two pilots and positions for scientists and engineers along the side.
NASA has also purchased a ground control station and satellite communication system for uplinking flight commands and downlinking aircraft and mission data. The ground control station is installed in a mobile trailer and, in addition to the pilot's remote cockpit, includes computer workstations for scientists and engineers. All the aircraft systems are mobile, making Ikhana ideal for missions conducted from remote sites around the globe.
Aircraft Description
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) of San Diego, Calif., developed the original Predator A medium-altitude, long-endurance UAS during the mid-1990s as an Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator for the United States Air Force. Development of the larger, more powerful Predator B was initiated in 2000 by the firm with partial funding from NASA, which was interested in the Earth science capabilities of a civil version of the aircraft with a larger payload and high-altitude capability along with long endurance.
NASA's Ikhana / Predator B has a wingspan of 66 feet and is 36 feet long. More than 400 pounds of sensors can be carried internally and over 2,000 pounds in external under-wing pods. Ikhana is powered by a Honeywell TPE 331-10T turbine engine and is capable of reaching altitudes above 40,000 feet. The Ikhana is the first production Predator B equipped with a digital electronic engine controller developed by Honeywell and GA-ASI that will make Ikhana five to 10 percent more fuel efficient than earlier versions of the aircraft.

Maine Animal Control vs Animal Damage Control
Maine Animal Control and Animal Damage Control are two super common titles that represent two different areas of specialty, yet are frequently used interchangeably.
In Maine, the Animal Control Officer(ACO) is:
1. On the respective Town or Municipalities payroll
2. Charged with handling Domestic animal complaints and issues
3. Licensed and regulated by the State of Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry.
Animal Damage Control Agents (ADC) are:
1. Licensed and regulated by the State. Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
2. Charged with resolving conflicts between people and wildlife. ADC agents do not handle domestic animal calls unless they are also licensed as an ACO for a given town.
3. ADC agents are not paid by the states, and operate as independent contractors working for themselves or other wildlife control businesses.
The wording is so similar that it is easily misconstrued constantly. Hopefully this helps some folks out that have been wondering just what the difference between Maine Animal Control vs Animal Damage Control is.

What comes from the heart | Khaula Sawah | TEDxMasonHighSchool
In this thought provoking talk, Dr. Sawah discusses how working with refugees changed her life. While leading a relatively normal life in suburban Ohio, Dr. Sawah joined UOSSM, an nonprofit organization that provides medical care to refugees in the border of Syria and Turkey. After joining UOSSM, Dr. Sawah realized the importance of not only empowering local refugee populations but furnishing the infrastructure of health care in war torn countries. Dr. Sawah continues to work with refugees and shares how powerful things that come from the heart can be. Dr. Khaula Sawah, a Doctor of Pharmacy graduate from University of Kentucky and a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, is a clinical/ staff pharmacist who has been working at different local hospitals, including UC Hospital. She worked at one point of her career at the Cincinnati Health Department and volunteered at the Drop-In Shelter clinic, serving the homeless population in downtown Cincinnati. Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, Dr. Sawah has been dedicating most of her time in medical missions to support the Syrian people affected by the crisis in Syria and Turkey. Dr Sawah has served as an Executive Director and a Board Member on several nonprofit organizations. She is a cofounder of Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations-USA (UOSSM USA), a nonprofit 501(C)3 charitable organization incorporated in the State of TX. She worked on the establishment of the Organization and was the CEO for almost 2 years. She is also a cofounder of Syrian American Foundation (SAF), a nonprofit 501(C)3 charitable organization based in Cincinnati. Dr Sawah has served as a Board member on UOSSM’s international partner (UOSSM-International). She spent almost 2 years of her life, volunteering as the Executive Director of UOSSM’s Turkish office. She worked with local Syrian doctors and pharmacists on the establishment of UOSSM office in Turkey and the establishment of its Emergency and Specialty hospital in Syria at the Syrian-Turkish border, which currently serves over 20,000 patients a month. UOSSM has provided medical aid to over half a million Syrians inside Syria and in Turkey and is currently one of the major humanitarian medical actors in the Syrian crisis providing medical relief and healthcare, mental health and psychosocial support services to the affected Syrian people in the region. In addition, realizing the importance of empowering the local population, UOSSM has been working on the capacity building of thousands of local Syrian doctors and other healthcare providers and administrators inside Syria. Dr. Sawah is currently the Lead of UOSSM in USA and until recently was the Chair of UOSSM Quality Assurance Committee; ensuring Quality and Accountability in the medical services provided by the Organization. Something Big (Western Movie in Full Length, English, Classic Cowboy Film) *free full westerns*
Full Western Movie, Full Length Cowboy Film, English: (1971)
Something Big (original title), Rated 12, Runtime 1h 48min, Comedy, Western.
Something Big is a 1971 American motion picture produced by Andrew V. McLaglen (who also directed it) and James Lee Barrett (who also wrote the screenplay). A Western comedy, the film stars Dean Martin, Honor Blackman and Brian Keith.
PLOT (Wikipedia): In the frontier of New Mexico Territory, Joe Baker is an aging, restless bandit determined to do something big before his fiancee Dover McBride arrives from the East. Dover's brother Tommy is a partner in Baker's banditry.
Baker must deal with the vulgar outlaw Johnny Cobb and his ruthless sidekick Angel Moon, while also opposing his plan is the cantankerous Colonel Morgan, who is on the cusp of retirement from the U.S. Army command in the territory. In a situation parallel to Baker's, the colonel's wife Mary Ann is arriving from the East to accompany him home on his retirement. Colonel Morgan learns from his Indian scout Bookbinder that Baker is planning something but is thwarted at learning details.
It is revealed that Baker is planning to attack and rob a bandit hoarde just across the border in Mexico. The treasure being well guarded, Baker makes a deal with the scurrilous Cobb to purchase a Gatling gun in exchange for a woman. Baker receives a letter from his fiancé Dover informing him of her imminent arrival, which sets a deadline on the achievement of his something big.
Baker's gang holds up a series of stagecoaches, but in each one he is unable to find a woman suitable for Cobb and lets the passengers go unmolested. He is finally able to find a worthy candidate, who turns out to be Colonel Morgan's wife Mary Ann. She quickly learns to like Baker because he treats her with respect.
The abduction of his wife enrages Morgan, who sets off with a patrol to rescue her and capture Baker.
Cobb and sidekick Moon meet the trader Malachi Morton in the desert to buy the gun, which has been quietly stolen from a federal arsenal. When the trader demands more, Moon hurls his knife into Morton's chest, instantly killing him. They take the gun. Before they can meet Baker, however, they are accosted by Morgan and his scout Bookbinder, who agree to let the bandits go if they reveal Baker's location.
Baker's fiancé Dover arrives at the fort and installs herself in Morgan's quarters. Hearing of her arrival, Baker agrees to meet her in the desert. She gives him an ultimatum to go home with her immediately or she will marry someone else.
The night before the supposed rendezvous with Cobb to purchase the gun, Baker realizes he is in love with Mary Ann. He attempts to kiss her, but she rebuffs him, stating she is love with her husband. Nevertheless, Baker tells Tommy that he intends to take the gun from Cobb without giving Mary Ann to him.
Morgan and his scout, with Cobb, Moon and the gun in tow, arrive at Baker's hideout. Angel Moon is killed when he attempts to kill Baker. Morgan proceeds to beat up Baker for stealing his wife. He refuses to give Baker the gun, but his wife reminds him that he is now officially retired and no longer has the authority to seize the gun as federal property.
Cobb realizes he is not going to get his woman and breaks down. Tommy realizes that there is a solution, namely that a pair of lonely women (ostensibly prostitutes) would certainly welcome Cobb's presence. Cobb proceeds to their house, and although it is across the border in Texas, where he is a wanted outlaw, the women roughly throw him off his horse and gleefully drag him across.
Baker and his men assault the bandit's town in Mexico, with the help of the Apache allies they have previously paid with whiskey. They are informed that the notorious bandit, named Emilio Estevez, is now a monk, who greets Baker in a garden. Baker suspects a ruse and pulls open the monk's robe, revealing a pistol. A gun battle erupts in which Estevez is shot dead. The Apaches, who arrive drunk, and sustain casualties, quickly flee.
Baker is able to mount the wagon with the Gatlin gun and goes on a killing rampage, mowing down men by the dozen from the rooftops of the town until the remainder flee. Baker finds the bandit's treasure in the town church, but as his men celebrate their riches, he is haunted by his fiancé's words and the sight of the crucifix on the wall.
Back at the fort, Morgan receives an emotional farewell from his assembled troops. Baker, Dover, Morgan and Mary Ann board the stagecoach to return to the East. As they ride out, Baker's men ride alongside and salute him, adorned like kings. Baker climbs out on top of the stagecoach and celebrates with them.
