Lake Mary Campground (Inyo National Forest) in Mammoth Lakes, California
Mount Whitney Portal, Inyo, California
Mount Whitney is the highest mountain peak (4421 meters) in the contiguous 48 states of the United States of America, located in the Sierra Nevada mountains east of the Central Valley of California. Mount Whitney straddles the border between Inyo and Tulare counties. The east slope of Mount Whitney is Inyo National Forest. This forest is a low-density pine forest with a few scrubs and many streams and bodies of fresh water.
The campground for Mount Whitney portal starts at 2500 m in elevation, and is already freezing cold throughout most of the day in October, even in this record hot year of 2012. Despite the cold and short amount of daytime, one should bring large quantities of water and sunblock, as the light from the sun has much less atmospheric molecules to pass through and thus the ultraviolet light exposure to the skin is much greater than down in the chaparral and deserts of California, causing much faster and stronger sunburns. Many parts of the trail are snowy or icy, and there are multiple water crossings, so hikers are required to have good balance and to wear thick hiking shoes with a lot of traction on the soles. As the signs at the end of the video state, people have died trying to get to the summit of Mount Whitney. Some of these deaths are from the usual causes, while there are reports of hikers ignoring incoming storm reports and exploding from lighting strikes or getting trapped by blizzards. The first person who died on Mount Whitney (I'm sure Native Americans died here first over the millenia) in United States history got blown up by lightning.

497-Onion Valley Road, over 8% climb to the top
We are just leaving Grays Meadows campground at 2000’ elevation above the sea level, headed up Onion Valley Road which is a very steep road located in the Eastern Sierra Inyo National Forest.
The road actually starts in the town of Independence, two videos before this one, at 3,994 feet elevation above the sea level.
It’s is 13 miles long to Onion Valley and the end of the road is at 9,163 feet elevation above the sea level.
As you will see, it’s a very tough steep climb with lots of switchbacks, and a dramatic section of them about halfway up the climb is the highlight, as it offers huge exposure and views over the Owens Valley.
Over this distance, the elevation gain is an average 7.6 % grade.
The road is usually open from May to November, depending on snow conditions. Trailers are not recommended; tent trailers are permissible.
The grade ramps up as you ascend, with the last ten miles averaging over 8 percent.
Onion Valley road is rated as the most difficult road bike climb in California, and #6 in the United States.
At the top is Onion Valley campground, the Bubbs Creek trail head and pack station.
With that said, Onion Valley is at the top of one of the toughest and most scenic climbs in California and should be on your short list.
So stick around and go on the ride to the top.

The forest hosts several superlatives, including Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States; Boundary Peak, highest point in Nevada; and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest that protects the oldest trees in the world. The forest, encompassing much of Owens Valley, was established by Theodore Roosevelt as a way of sectioning off land to accommodate the Los Angeles Aqueduct project in 1907, making the Inyo National Forest one of the least wooded forests in the United States' system.

Brook Trout in Mount Whitney Portal, Inyo, California
Brook trout, or Salvelinus fontinalis, is also called the Eastern brook trout. It has been introduced to California in places such as here in Mount Whitney Portal in Inyo County, California. Naturalized brook trout here in California have lived up to 15 years of age, whereas the more typical age maximum is 7 years in the Eastern United States; like many introduced or invasive species, the brook trout seems to do even better in California's environments. The brook trout is a species of fish in the salmon family of order Salmoniformes. In many parts of its range, it is known as the speckled trout or squaretail. A potamodromous population in Lake Superior is known as coaster trout or, simply, as coasters. Though commonly called a trout, the brook trout is actually a char, along with lake trout, bull trout, Dolly Varden and the Arctic char. The brook trout is the state fish for eight states: Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
Individuals normally spend their entire lives in fresh water, but some, called salters or sea-run, may spend up to three months at sea in the spring, not straying more than a few kilometers from the river mouth. The fish return upstream to spawn in the late summer or autumn. The female constructs a depression in a location in the stream bed, sometimes referred to as a redd, where groundwater percolates upward through the gravel. One or more males approaches the female, fertilizing the eggs as the female expresses them. The eggs are slightly denser than water. The female then buries the eggs in a small gravel mound; they hatch in 95 to 100 days.
