Scotland Tour: Hey, Pharaoh, We're Up Here...in Scotland
We all know about Stonehenge and England's famous stone circles. But I didn't realize Scotland had its fancy-pants knuckle-draggers, too. (That's your cue, caveman sympathizers.)
At Clava Cairns, set in a peaceful grove of trees just a few minutes' drive from Inverness, are the remains of three thought-provoking stone igloos, each cleverly constructed 4,000 years ago with a passageway that the sun illuminates, as if by magic, with each winter solstice. Wandering through these, knowing they're as old as the pyramids, was a trip highlight (one of many).
One thing I love about our tours is that each day, our hardworking guides have several of these little treats to spring on us. They set the historic context, then turn us loose. It's as if we hiked there ourselves, but still had a professor on call. This is one of the reasons why so many of the people who sign up for our tours start their request for our sales material by saying, I'm not the tour-taking type, but... and find our tours just right for their independent style.

Kyle of Lochalsh | Scottish Highlands & Islands Travelogue 2018 | S1E5
We catch the ferry from Craignure on the Isle of Mull back to Oban on the Scottish mainland. We then make the scenic (but rainy) drive north in the Land Rover Defender 110 up to Fort William on Loch Linnhe, and then through Glen Sheil over to the Kyle of Lochalsh and Eilean Donan Castle. No camping today, but we do book a room at the Hotel Balmacara where we get a comfortable night's sleep and a good meal. We're surprised to see another Scotland Overland Land Rover at the hotel, but we don't run into the occupants.
This series follows our 2-week Scottish Highlands and Islands adventure from October 2018. Join us as we drive over 1,500 miles in 14 days and visit the islands of Mull, Iona, Harris, Lewis and Skye, and drive parts of the NC500 Scottish Highlands route.

Enjoying the Wonders of Scotland in the Highlands
There’s something powerful about combining dramatic natural scenery with dramatic history. And no place does that quite like Glencoe, a lush and wild valley in the Scottish Highlands. I’m here now with my Scottish friend and tour guide Colin Mairs.
When I’m researching my guidebooks, I don’t have extra hours to take hikes like I’d like to. But simply walking a few steps into nature from a car park makes a huge difference. Get out, leave a few footprints, eat the wind.
(This is Day 89 of my “100 Days in Europe” series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences across Europe. Still to come: England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, and more. Follow along at
Day 3 Scottish Road Trip: Inveraray to Oban via Glen Coe 20/3/16
Day 3 of our fabulous Road Trip in Scotland. Today we started off from Inveraray with blue skies and no wind, took pictures of the castle. Then it was off northwards, stopping first at Kilchurn Castle. Then we took the B8074 Glen Orchy Road to get to Glen Coe where we stopped at Signal Rock and the village. Next we took the A828 coastal road and stopped at Castle Stalker before arriving at Oban via Appin. Another great day! Enjoy!
