RUSSIA: IRKUTSK: ANTONOV 124 MILITARY AIRCRAFT CRASH UPDATE (2)
Russian/Nat
Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin has visited the scene of one of the country's worst air crashes, promising aid to families of the victims and praising the work of rescue teams.
Rescue workers are braving sub-zero temperatures as they search for victims of the military cargo plane crash in Siberia.
So far, 42 bodies had been recovered on Sunday from the massive heap of smouldering rubble left behind when the plane ploughed into a residential neighborhood on Saturday in the city of Irkutsk.
Irkutsk on Sunday morning -- and the tail of the huge Antonov military cargo plane still leans against an apartment building in the Siberian city.
Overnight and into the morning, rescue workers are still sifting through the smouldering wreckage of the crash, braving sub-zero temperatures.
Some 42 bodies have been recovered so far -- that figure's bound to rise.
It's not clear how many people were on the plane -- some officials said 23; others, 46 -- but authorities said there were no survivors.
They also believe many of the other fatalities will turn out to have been residents of a five-storey apartment building demolished in the crash.
Officials say at least 74 of the registered tenants have checked in -- but 34 remain unaccounted for.
Given the destructive force of the crash and the appalling weather conditions, it's hard to believe there can be any survivors.
But Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, who flew in from Moscow on Sunday morning, believes that the search should continue as long as there is a glimmer of hope.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
There are questions that need to be answered. Here there is a problem about whether people were in their apartments or not. Now there are 22 people who we don't know whether they have died or not because we don't know whether they were at home. You see the situation here now.
SUPER CAPTION: Viktor Chernomyrdin, Prime Minister of Russia
These soldiers were called in to help with the rescue effort -- there's not much for them to do now except keep bystanders away from the scene.
This man saw what happened when the huge plane -- one of the world's largest -- dropped from the skies just 20 seconds after take-off from a nearby air-base.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
There was no sound of the engines. There was just the noise of the plane cutting through the air followed by a boom and then the flames erupted.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Mitrofonov, eyewitness
Two flight-recorder boxes have been recovered, and a third is still being looked for.
But it will take weeks before a special commission can have any real idea about the possible causes of the accident.

Taltsy Museum - Museum of Wooden Architecture Irkutsk region
The Taltsy Museum (Russian: Тальцы), located on the Angara 47 kilometers (29 mi) South of Irkutsk, is an open-air museum of Siberian traditional architecture. Numerous old wooden buildings from villages in the Angara valley, which have been flooded after the construction of the Bratsk Dam and Ust-Ilimsk Dam, have been transported to the museum and reassembled there. One of the centerpieces of the collection is a partial recreation of the 17th-century ostrog (fortress) of Ilimsk, which consists of the original Spasskaya Tower and the Church of Our Lady of Kazan transported from the flooded ostrog in the mid-1970s, to which an exact modern copy of another tower of the ostrog and the Southern wall of the fortress were added in the early 2000s

Malye Karely Wooden Architecture Museum - Moscow , Russia
Malye Korely (Russian: ????? ??????) is a village in Primorsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast, in the north of Russia. The main sight of the village is an open-air museum, featuring the traditional wooden architecture of Arkhangelsk area. The museum is located on the right bank of the Northern Dvina River close to the mouth of the Korelka River, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southeast from the city of Arkhangelsk.
The museum was created on July 17, 1964.[1] Traditional wooden architecture has been recognized at the time one of the most characteristic features of Russian Norths, and some of the buildings, churches, chapels, and peasant houses, scattered all over the Arkhangelsk Oblast, were put under state protection. The goal of the creation of the museum was to save the most outstanding wooden monuments, placing them under protection on the premises of the museum. The first building, a windmill (1744) from the village of Bor of Kholmogorsky District, was moved to the museum in 1968.[1] In 1972, the first exhibit item, an icon showing St. James, was transferred to the museum. In parallel with the building transfer, it was decided that the museum will be divided into a number of sectors, representing different historical areas. The first sector, representing Kargopol and the Onega, was completed in 1973, and on June 1, 1973 the museum was open for public.
In 1983, the museum became a member of the Europen Open-Air Museum Association.[1] In 1986, the museum, which was previously subordinate to the Arkhangelsk Fine Art Museum, became an independent museum unit. In 1995, it was designated as a cultural monument of federal significance. Lidia Bostryom was the director of the museum between 1975 and 2005.

The heady air of the Foggy Albion is quite toxic for those inclined towards political adventures. The runaway oligarch Berezovsky is among those that didn't end well, having tried to undermine Russia while living in London. Last year, a well-known Russian banker Pyotr Aven published a hefty book The Time of Berezovsky. The head of Alpha Bank shared his personal accounts of those times with Nailya Asker-Zade in the program Actors. The program will air on our channel tonight after midnight. Here's a fragment.
Veliky Novgorod Russia's origins HD
Veliky Novgorod Russia's origins HD
Almost half a way on the road from modern Russian capital (Moscow) to former one (St. Petersburg) there is the ancient city of Novgorod Velikiy (the Great). By now it is a conglomerate of historical, cultural and spiritual monuments worth seeing.
Velikiy Novgorod - one of the most ancient cities of Russia located in its North-West, near the site where the Volkhov river takes its waters from Lake Ilmen, emerged as a political center of Slavic and Fino-Ugric tribes in the mid-9th century, while as a town it was formed in the middle of the 10th century.
The history of Novgorod is closely linked with all major stages in the life of the Russian state. In those times, when the statehood of Rus was just in the making, the Novgorodians invited Scandinavian prince Rurik to keep law and order, thus giving birth to the prince Rurik dynasty that ruled over all Russian lands throughout more than 750 years
