Dearborn, Michigan
In the last 12 months the city of Dearborn, MI has been thrown into conflict. A conflict about fear, ideology and identity politics –which has at its heart the central question of what it means to be an American today. Home to the largest mosque in North America, it is a place of apparent contradictions: simultaneously a sleepy affluent suburb and the subject of rumours around ISIS terror cells and sharia law.
This film takes us into the lives of five very different citizens who have been caught in the crossfire, from Muslims to Christians, citizen militias and young university graduates. For all, their American identity is paramount. As they grapple with questions of religion, race and class, do these separate communities have more in common than they realise?

Muslims Stoning Christians in Dearborn, Michigan
During the 2012 Arab International Festival held this past June in Dearborn, Michigan, a group of Christian evangelists were pelted with stones, bottles, and debris by Muslim youths while deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office stood idly by, allowing the criminal assault to take place. Many of the Christians were bloodied by the attack. When Ruben Israel, the leader of the Christian group, asked the law enforcement officers present to step in and enforce the criminal law so that the Christians could exercise their right to freedom of speech, Israel was given the option of either leaving the festival or facing arrest.
Israel retained the legal services of the American Freedom Law Center (AFLC), a national, nonprofit public interest law firm that specializes in defending the free speech rights of Christians. AFLC plans to file a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Israel and the Christian group, whose constitutional rights were violated by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Robert Muise, Co-Founder and Senior Counsel of AFLC, commented, Whether you agree or disagree with the Christians' message, there is one issue to which there is no dispute: no citizen should be stoned in a city street in America for exercising his constitutional right to freedom of speech. And what makes this case so egregious is that law enforcement officers were present and made the conscious choice to allow the Muslim mob to silence the Christian speakers through violence. Indeed, the video of the incident looks like something you would see in the Middle East, not in the United States.
AFLC Co-Founder and Senior Counsel David Yerushalmi, an expert on sharia (Islamic law) added, While it is shocking to see video of Christians being stoned in the United States for criticizing Islam, it is not necessarily surprising that this incident occurred in Dearborn, Michigan, a city where the mayor and law enforcement have consistently violated Christians' free speech rights in favor of appeasing a large Muslim population and where, in line with the Islamic legal dictates of sharia, the Christian Gospel is treated as criminally offensive speech, and violence 'for the sake of Allah' is reinforced by arresting or removing the Christians. What you are witnessing on the video is the enforcement of sharia by a hostile mob and law enforcement aiding and abetting.
Israel asked AFLC to assist him and his fellow Christians with their legal challenge because of the experience, expertise, and successful track record of Muise and Yerushalmi, who are no strangers to the challenges Christians face in Dearborn, a city that has earned a reputation as being hostile toward Christians.

Dearborn, Michigan
Dearborn is a city in the State of Michigan. It is located in Wayne County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Dearborn is the eighth largest city in the State of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 98,153. First settled in the late 18th century by French farmers in a series of ribbon farms along the Rouge River and the Sauk Trail, the community grew with the establishment of the Detroit Arsenal on the Chicago Road linking Detroit and Chicago. It later grew into a manufacturing hub for the automotive industry.
The city was the home of Henry Ford and is the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company. It has a campus of the University of Michigan as well as Henry Ford Community College. Dearborn has The Henry Ford, the United States' largest indoor-outdoor museum complex and Metro Detroit's leading tourist attraction.
Dearborn residents are primarily of European or Middle Eastern heritage, descendants of 19th and 20th-century immigrants. German, Polish, Irish and Italian are the primary European ethnicities. Middle Eastern ancestries make up the largest ethnic grouping with Lebanese, Yemeni, Iraqi, Syrian and Palestinian groups present.
The area had been inhabited for thousands of years by varying indigenous peoples. Historical tribes belonged mostly to the Algonquian-language family, although the Huron were Iroquoian speaking. French colonists had a trading post and developed Detroit during the colonial period, trading with numerous regional tribes. This settlement was ceded to Britain in 1763 after its victory in the Seven Years' War.
The Dearborn area was settled permanently by Europeans in 1786, after the American Revolutionary War. Population growth led to Dearborn Township being formed in 1833 and the village of Dearbornville within it being established in 1836, both named after patriot Henry Dearborn, a General in the American Revolution and Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson. The town of Dearborn was incorporated in 1893.
In 1927 it was established as a city. Its current borders result from a 1928 consolidation vote that merged Dearborn and neighboring Fordson (previously known as Springwells), which feared being absorbed into Detroit.
The area between the two towns was, and still remains in part, undeveloped. Once farm land, this was bought by Henry Ford for his estate, Fair Lane, and the Ford Motor Company World Headquarters. Later developments in this corridor were the Ford airport (later converted to the Dearborn Proving Grounds), other Ford administrative and development facilities, The Henry Ford (the region's leading tourist attraction containing a reconstructed historic village and museum), the Henry Ford Centennial Library, the super-regional shopping mall Fairlane Town Center, and the Dearborn Civic Center. The open land is planted with sunflowers and often with Henry Ford's favorite soybeans. The crops are never harvested.
The Arab American National Museum (AANM) opened in Dearborn in 2005, the first museum in the world devoted to Arab-American history and culture. Arab Americans in Dearborn include ethnic Lebanese Christians who immigrated in the early twentieth century to work in the auto industry as well as more recent Arab immigrants from other nations.

Dearborn, MI is the first emerging No-Go Zone in the United States for Christians and Jews. Islamic law or in Arabic Shariah Islamiyya, considers proselytizing any other faith besides Islam blasphemous and an offense to Allah.
Dearborn has the largest percentage of Muslims per population than any other county in the United States at 46%. During the 2009 Dearborn Arab International Festival Christians began openly proselytizing resulting in arrests and escalating violence each and every year.
2009 - George Saieg was arrested for handing out Christian literature during the Arab International Festival. The Thomas More Law Center took his case and a court of law proved that his 1st Amendment rights were violated. That same year Christians David Wood, Nabeel Qureshi and their team were physically assaulted by the Arab International Fairs private security guards - no charges were filed.
2010 - David Wood, Dr. Nabeel Qureshi, Paul Rezkalla and Negeen Mayel were arrested for talking with Muslims at the Dearborn Arab International Festival and charged with Breach of the Peace. The trial found all four defendants innocent and their 1st Amendment rights were violated, resulting in a judgement of over $100,000.
In 2011, I was attacked for legally filming while 2000 angry Muslims were protesting Christian Street preachers. As documented in this video both my attackers were found guilty of assault and/or assault and battery.
In 2012, Christians were stoned on Friday at the Festival. The next day a Muslim man named Mohammed Agby tried to run over 9 Christians with his vehicle and was arrested.
The Dearborn Police Department acted admirably and should be commended.
These long train of abuses has earned Dearborn, MI the title of being the first No-Go Zone in the United States.
