2018 Update on the Bilbo Mound - The Lost Civilization Beneath Savannah Georgia
EVER HEARD OF THE BILBO MOUND?
Posted by Richard Thornton
It appears to be the oldest mound in North America and contained some of the oldest pottery in North America. It slipped under the radar because of when it was excavated and a “Naw, that couldn’t be right” . . . 30 years later. You will never guess what all this has to do with the game of golf!
Again, special thanks to retired College of Charleston professor, Gene Waddell, who donated an out of print book, published by Harvard University, which provided us this fascinating information. Bilbo is the name of a type of Renaissance Era sword, manufactured in Portugal.
Between 1937 and 1941, archaeologist Joseph Caldwell led a team of graduate students and WPA- funded team of 100 African American women that excavated Native American mound sites across the landscape of the Savannah, GA area. Most of their time was spent on Irene Island, where there had once been a royal compound and very unusual mound. Irene Island was designated to be completely destroyed in order to expand the Port of Savannah. Irene was probably the site of the capital of Chicora. *
Near the tail end of the project, when the United States government was preparing for war with Germany, Caldwell spent a few days at an inconspicuous mound just east of downtown that he called the Bilbo Mound. The mound was originally built inside a round pond by adding more and more thin layers of dirt to the center. By the time, that British colonists arrived in 1733, the pond had become a swamp.
About all Caldwell’s team found were crude, fiber-tempered potsherds, greatly decomposed skeletons and some stone tools associated with fishing. It was assumed that the pottery was merely a later offshoot of Stallings Island pottery and was called Bilbo Pottery. At the time, there was no radiocarbon dating, so the collection of Bilbo artifacts were boxed and generally forgotten.
In 1957, archaeologist William Haag from Louisiana State University became interested in the Bilbo artifacts after Humble Oil Exploration Company began drilling a test hole near the archaeological site in search of petroleum. He dug some test pits to determine the chronology of the artifacts unearthed by Caldwell. There was no pottery below a level dated at 1,870 BC. Halfway down to the base from there was dated at 2,165 BC. The base of the mound was dated at 3,540 BC.
William Haag’s peers in the archaeology profession scoffed at his findings and they were ignored by professional journals. The archaeologists knew “for a fact” that the oldest pottery in North America had to be in Ohio and at that time, the earliest known Hopewell pottery had been dated at about 100-200 AD.
In 1977, the Peabody Museum of Harvard University published the professional papers of Savannah archaeologist, Antonio Waring. The editor, Stephen Williams, did include a mention of Haag’s radiocarbon dates, but added a note that they were impossible because it would mean that mound building began in North America 3,000 years before pottery making. At the time, no one had thoroughly studied the ancient pottery coming out of eastern Georgia and southern South Carolina.
In 1993, the University of Georgia’s Department of Anthropology published a book on the archaeology of the Georgia Coast. It briefly mentioned the Bilbo Mound and said that the mound was begun around 1,700 BC . . . 1,840 years later than Haag’s number.
In 1998, the initial construction of earthworks at Watson Brake, Louisiana was dated to about 3,400 BC. All references now state that Watson Brake is the oldest known mound in North America. Everyone has completely forgotten the Bilbo Mound because their predecessors assumed that it couldn’t be true in 1957.
In 1999, radiocarbon dates were obtained for Stallings Island potsherds excavated from Stallings Island, GA, on the Savannah River near Augusta. They were determined to date from about 2,200 BC or earlier. Stallings Island pottery from other sites on the Savannah have been found to date from at least 2,400 BC and possibly 2,800 BC. So in the 21st century academicians suddenly believed that Bilbo pottery was as old as Professor Haag said it was, but seem to have no clue that his much older dates for the actual construction of the original mound were intentionally left out of the books 58 years ago.

The Jekyll Island dead beach trees
The Jekyll Island beach of dead trees is definitely one of those places that will show up on a Buzzfeed type website listing 25 weirdest places that actually exist. The oak trees that sit in the water are on Driftwood Beach and sit kind of at the end of the island away from most things. I got the impression that most people who vacation there either don't know about it or are more interested in their golf game. This impression was based on the fact that I saw 2 people in the 3 hours I was there walking on the beach. But maybe it was just a slow day. Anyhow this is fine by me because any deserted place like that is a great find!
At first, it’s so bizarre to see the trees on the beach like that. Walking around them was the closest I’ve ever felt to being on another planet. It’s just not something most people see every day, or maybe ever. From a photography perspective, I knew right away that I’d be back in the early morning because the sunrise photos are definitely the way to go here. However, anytime time of day is a great photo time because of how incredible the subject is. Trees in the ocean? Definitely worth an Instagram pic.
So where is it? Jekyll Island sits south of Savannah Georgia about half way to the Florida state line. Its littered with hundred year old mansions looking out over the water. Many of them have been turned into places to stay in when vacationing there but there are a number of normal hotels as well. Jekyll is very rich in history, way more than I care to type here but trust me, it’s something worth googleing.
What happened? Why are they there? Classic case of erosion is my guess. I can only assume that many many years ago, those trees were actually in the woods near the beach. Over time the ocean grabs more and more land. At least in this case, mother nature is creating something awesome as it takes the beach away.
My suggestions- This place is cool anytime of the day but I doubt there's much of a sunset view here. However, the other side of the island has stunning sunset views. If you are planning to take some sweet pics of the trees then I would absolutely get up early in the morning for the sunrise shots. Something about being on a beach when the sun is coming up that has always interested me. Anyway, It is decent terrain for the most part. There’s maybe a tree or 2 to step over or under but you can make your own limits because you don't have to walk for long to see some of the trees. In my opinion that makes this place a good family destination. No hiking boots required, it’s a short walk from the car and even grandma can shuffle herself out there too.
Make sure you plan for at least a day to check out some of the rest of the island. The main resort there is really cool and looks to have an amazing restaurant.
BTW You may have heard of the conspiracy book, The Creature from Jekyll Island. I assure you this place has nothing to do with the Federal Reserve but it looks like an interesting read.
Unfortunately Hurricane Matthew has taken its toll on the beach so many of the trees are no longer upright. It’s a stark reminder how it’s just a matter of time before they're all gone so make sure you plan a Jekyll Island vacation and see this place soon!

Crossroads Theme Park - Stone Mountain Park - Georgia RV Trip - Part 15 -
Visitors can now travel back in time at Stone Mountain Park Crossroads, where you can explore an 1870s rural southern town, complete with a cast of authentically costumed characters who sing, play instruments, tell stories, and demonstrate crafts such as glass blowing, candle making, and blacksmithing (Closed). In addition to the town's quirky and talented characters, other special treats include a gristmill and bakery, a general store with candy and ice-cream production facilities, and a boardinghouse restaurant that serves up tasty Southern cuisine, from chicken and dumplings to fried catfish. If you plan to eat, you might want to stop by and add your name to the list before you explore the town, as there is often a wait. Another part of the Crossroads attraction is the Great Barn, a hit with children and adults. Join in the fun as you help harvest fruits and vegetables throughout this multi-level foam factory to rack up points for your team. The Treehouse Challenge is a one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure that pits boys against girls to control balls on a large track that links the two tree houses (sort of a life-size pinball game). The town's centerpiece is the Tall Tales of the South theater, where visitors use special glasses to view a 3-D film with 4-D (yes, four) special effects. The frog's tongue, which stretches into the movie audience from its perch on a swamp log, is just one of the surprises of the experience. Small children might not enjoy the film, as some of the effects are a bit unnerving.
Crossroads is a recreation of an 1872 southern town with several attractions including a modern 4-D movie theater, an adventure mini-golf course, a duck tour ride, stores and restaurants. Craft demonstrators include glass blowing and candy making. Other attractions in this area include:
Geyser Towers is a playground featuring a large fountain at the entrance, so guests have the option of climbing through the course or getting wet.
Visit SkyHike to trek through the treetops on one of the nation’s largest family adventure courses. No two hikes are the same! Your choices make each hike a new challenge while secured to the patented overhead safety system.
Explore the quarter of a mile course with your kids. Master suspended wooden bridges. Leap from one wooden slat to another. Balance on a single rope high above the ground. Or climb to the top on vertical net bridges.
You have control of your trek as you pick from a 12 ft. trail for beginners, a 24 ft. high trail for the somewhat courageous and the super challenge trail at nearly 40 ft. in the air (four stories high), for the true daredevil in you. The Great Barn may look like any other country barn from the outside, but step inside and you find Atlanta's newest and most exciting children's attraction.
